Shailendra Song of the Week (SSOW) Week #06
Tu pyar ka sagar hai
Songs So Far
So far, I have given you following songs penned by him:
W#01 – Raat ke hamsafar thak ke ghar ko chale.
W#02 – Dil apna aur preet prayi.
W#03 – Rimjhim ke taraane leke aayi barsaat.
W#04 – Ab ke baras bhej bhaiya ko babul.
W#05 – Ja ja re ja balamwa.
Nutan
After W#04 song Ab ke baras bhej bhaiya ko babul wherein, in a jail for murder, the song (though not lip-synced by her) spoke accurately about her emotions. Ditto with this hymn sung by Manna Dey in the 1955 Amiya Chakravarty movie Seema starring Nutan and Balraj Sahni.
Whilst covering DN Madhok on my page Lyrical under Great Lyricists series, I gave you a song sung by Shamim Bano (related to Khursheed Bano and Meena Kumari). I mentioned it to you that her best role in a movie was the debut movie of Dilip Kumar in 1944: Jawar Bhata. That movie was an Amiya Chakravarty movie. So, in a way, Amiya was responsible for giving a break to the greatest actor in Hindi films: Dilip Kumar.
In both Bimal Roy’s movie Bandini and Amiya Chakravarty’s Seema, you would see another commonality: both are having a woman as the main protagonist. Is there something Bengali about it? You may be right; please read: ‘Bengal Based Hindi Movies From Anuradha To Piku‘.
Incidentally, both the movies won Nutan Best Actress Awards, as did three other movies: Sujata, Milan and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki.
Seema – the Movie
The story is about this young girl Gauri (Nutan) who is ill treated by her aunt after she becomes an orphan, is wrongly accused of stealing a necklace, is rebellious, and often misunderstood until she takes shelter under kind-hearted Balraj Sahni (Ashok) in Shree Satyanand Anathalaya. Some of the songs that helped progress the story and her emotions are:
“Ye Duniya Gam Ka Mela Hai” (Hame Bhi De Do Sahara, Ke Besahare Hain) Mohammed Rafi Hasrat Jaipuri
“Baat Baat Me Rutho Na” Lata Mangeshkar Hasrat Jaipuri
“Suno Chhoti Si Gudiya” (Happy) Lata Mangeshkar Hasrat Jaipuri
“Suno Chhoti Si Gudiya” (Sad) Lata Mangeshkar Hasrat Jaipuri
Shailendra’s Lyrics
From Ashok (Balraj Sahni) being a kind-hearted Manager of an Orphanage, suddenly, in this hymn, Shailendra raises the level to God Himself.
Jaana hai sagar paar
This is as per our scriptures, eg, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Life of a human being on earth is often compared to a Sagar or Sea and we have to all go across. SGGS talks about the Name of God (Waheguru) as the Bohith (boat) that can help us cross this sea.
Shailendra goes several steps ahead by calling it a Sagar of Love (of God). He doesn’t mention it in the lyrics but the thought comes out loud and clear that not just Nutan as Gauri but we are all orphans without God and that if He would send us away we are as bad as dead.
In the second stanza, he climbs another rung and talks about this Seema (border) between Life and Death. Brilliant indeed.
Aayen kaun disha se hum?
This is another very beautiful line. The meaning is not literal but deep. Tell us God, in which way we can get you since there is this uljhan in our minds.
Shankar Jaikishan’s Composition
They chose a dignified Raag Kanada, Tal Kaherava to compose it. It is not my intention to give you intricacies of this raag here. Suffice it to say that if you think of other songs in the same raag and tal (not all by S-J), you would get the feel: Hum tujhase muhabbat karke sanam, Hum tumase juda hoke, Mohabbat ki jhooti kahani pe roye, O duniya ke rakhwale, Teri duniya mein dil lagta nahin and Tora man darpan kehlaye.
My Own Poetry
I have written several regarding God’s bounties. I have chosen one at random:
RABB KI REHMAT KO PEHCHAAN
Rajinder Krishan Song of the Week (RKSOW) Week #6 Kabhi na kabhi, kahin na kahin, koi na koi to aayega
Much Before COVID 19
This song was penned by Rajinder Krishan, composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Mohammad Rafi in an era when people craved for contact with others. Instances wherein meeting people would result in deaths were very limited (The closest was that a villain called Pran would make damsels pregnant by simply looking at them; but then, becoming pregnant was the potential of adding lives rather than extinguishing them). Yes, lovers, especially in Hindi movie, often bemoaned that Love actually killed them (they have penned any number of songs to that effect). But, you know that that was only for dramatic effect and no one was ever proved clinically dead by a doctor.
You can, therefore, conclude that craving for human contact was a desire that most people had.
Sharabi
Dev Anand as Keshav in 1964 Raj Rishi movie Sharabi didn’t have to be Corona positive to kill himself; he had liquor and he was, in the movie, on a path of self-destruction faster than any virus could. He had promised to reform (most drunkards do it and such resolves of theirs are often inscribed on the tombstones). However, if Hindi movies are to be believed, all (without exception) drunkards, prostitutes (or courtesans) and dacoits are merely victims of circumstances.
Dev Anand’s circumstances were that he was to leave drinking and spend the rest of his sober and saintly married life with Madhubala as Kamala. But then, he was drawn to drinking again and she was to be married elsewhere.
This ghar ghar ki kahani made RK, MM and MR rise to the occasion and made not only this beautifully poignant number but several others, such as:
Sawan ke mahine mein….lagati hai to pee (drink and not urinate) leta hoon; do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon.
Mujhe le chalo aaj phir us gali mein jahan penhle pehle ye dil ladkhadaya.
You would agree that Sharabis beat Prostitutes and Courtesans hands down in Hindi movies in respect of quality of songs including those in Pakeezah and Umrao Jaan. One major reason for this is that courtesans and prostitutes are females and how can any female singer beat Mohammad Rafi in the quality of singing? Even males couldn’t. When Manna Dey, whose birth anniversary we celebrated yesterday, was asked where would he rank Rafi, he promptly replied “From #1 to #10”. By this he meant that any other singer is simply ten places below him.
Rajinder Krishan’s Lyrics
This Shimla boy always said things differently and there are several examples of it; eg:
Ghar se chale the ham to khushi ki talaash mein
Gham raah mein khade the wahin saath ho liye.
(I have often qouted this): Phir tassavur tere pehlu mein bitha jaayega.
Wo ghadi yaad hai jab tumase mulaaqaat hui
Ek ishaaraa huaa do haath badhe baat hui.
Lets examine the lyrics of the current song:
Kabse tanha ghum raha hu duniya ke virane mein,
Khaali jaam liye baitha hoon kab se is maikhane mein,
Koi to hoga mera sakii koi to pyas bujhayega
Kabhi na kabhi kahi na kahi koi na koi to aayega
Naturally he is hinting about a Pyaas that is not physical. Rajinder Krishan has taken the metaphor of maikhana and saki to hint towards seeking empathy from a kind hearted and loving person.
People do take own virtues as hidden treasures. However, the evils of others are always taken at face value. Even Sahir had something to write about it:
Achhon ko bura sabit karna duniya ki purani aadat hai
Is may ko mubarak cheez samajh maana ke bahut badnam hai ye
I am not even giving you the third stanza. I think you get my point.
My Own Poetry
I wrote innumerable poems in lighter vein for my friend Maj Vishwas Mandloi’s group i-peg. I have selected one on similar theme:
MERE GHAMON KA ILAAJ
दुनिया में कोई अपना है तो वो है शराब,
बाकियों ने तो मिल के ज़िन्दगी की है खराब;
एक एक के किस्से सुनाता हूँ मैं आज सब को,
सब के चेहरों से आज मैं उठाता हूँ नकाब।
पहले मेरी बीवी थी बहुत कमसिन और हसीन,
अब लगती है जैसे buffalo in tight jeans;
रवैय्या उसका अब ऐसे जैसे कोई सैय्याद हो,
हर एक बात पे create करती है scene.
बच्चे मेरे ऐसे जैसे अपने नहीं पराये हों,
जैसे ससुराल से श्रीमति जी ने दहेज में लाये हों;
लोगों को तो वो यूँ बताते फिरते हैं,
Daddy के ज़ुल्मों से बहुत तंग आये हों।
रिश्तेदारों के बारे आप को क्या सुनाएं,
ग़म के गीत बार बार क्यों हम गायें;
उन्हें ज़रूरत है तो आ जाते हैं खाली हाथ,
मेरी ज़रूरत में तो वो नज़र भी ना आयें।
दोस्त मेरे हैं एक से एक बड़ के,
आते हैं मेरे पास अपनी बीवियों से झगड़ के;
Please enjoy: Kabhi na kabhi, kahin na kahin, koi na koi to aayega…
I am sure if Dev Anand had come to know that I was going to write the above, he would have put that too in the movie Sharabi. Anyway, his loss!
Shailendra Song of the Week (SSOW) Week #05 Ja ja re ja balamwa
Among ‘My Favourite Five Songs Of Lata Mangeshkar’
Lata Mangeshkar has always been my favourite female playback singer. Despite all the controversy regarding her feeling insecure enough to deter all competition to her Numero Uno position in Hindi films, I adore her. A ‘favourite’ is a matter of love and normally your favourite actor, song, scenery, dish, incident is not subjected to reasoning by you. You have precious memories of your favourites.
On the 28th Sep 2016, when she turned 87 (three years older than my mother), I put my head on the chopper block by selecting and publishing ‘My Favourite Five Songs Of Lata Mangeshkar‘, the only female singer whose thousands of songs were subjected by me to the scrutiny of my heart in order to select just five. I selected Ja ja re ja balamwa at #2.
I am aware there are other lists going around by the cognoscenti; but, frankly, I don’t give a damn. A singer’s singing, in addition to all the audio or vocal qualities that it must have, must be pleasant to the ear. This one is to my ear. Period.
A Courtesan Song As My Favourite?
The song is from the 1956 movie Basant Bahaar and its lyrics are a marvel produced by the great Shailendra and its composition is by my favourite music duo: Shankar Jaikishan. Its raag is Jhinjhoti and tal is Tintal.
Why would a song picturised on a courtesan evoke such strong feelings in me? Well, courtesans were essentially a part of our culture. One of them (Anarkali) nearly married a would be emperor. In Shashi Kapoor’s movie Utsav, he brought out how important a courtesan (Rekha as Vasantsena) was in our society. In the movie Amrapali (based on a true story), the king Ajatashatru wages a war to get her (Vyjayanthimala in the title role) and she finally takes to Buddhism! By the way, Amrapali had some of her best songs including the iconic Tumhen yaad karte karte jaayegi rayn saari (also created for her by the team of Shailendra and Shanakar Jaikishan).
In the 1956 Raja Nawathe movie Basant Bahar too, Kumkum as the dancing girl Radhika is dancing in the presence of the Emperor, played by Chandrashekhar and naturally the emotions she conveys are the emotions of the queen. Hindi films directors of yore, often used the courtesans to express the feelings of the heroines (eg in Chhote Nawab song, the first song of RD Burman with Lata ji (composed in Raag Malgunji): Ghar aaja ghir aaye badraa saanwariya.
The Movie Basant Bahar
I would place the movie as iconic as far as its songs are concerned. Four years before it was made by Raja Nawathe, we had a movie on somewhat similar theme: Vijay Bhatt’s 1952 movie Baiju Bawra with Bharat Bhushan in the title role and on a mission to defeat Tansen in a musical duel to avenge the death of his father. In Basant Bahar too, Bharat Bhushan (as Gopal) is on a mission to defeat Malaya, the son of a royal musician, so that the winner would be chosen as the royal musician.
If Baiju Bawra was iconic in that all its 13 songs were based on raagas by the music director Naushad who first used raaga based songs in Hindi movies, Basant Bahar too had its songs based on raagas:
Ketaki, Gulab, Juhi Champaka Bana Phule (Raag Basant Bahar, Ektal).
Ja ja re ja balamwa (Raag Jhinjhoti, Tintal).
Sur na saje kya gaayun main (Raag Pilu, Tal Kaherava).
Duniya na bhaye mohe ab to bulale (Raag Todi, Tal Punjabi Theka (Sitarkhani).
Bhaye Bhanjana…Darasa Tere Mange Main Tera Pujari (Raag Mian Ki Malhar, Jhaptal).
Badi Der Bhai Kab Loge Khabar (Raag Pilu, Tal Kaherava).
That is six out of nine songs based on raagas as compared to all 13 of Baiju Bawra. There is one difference from Baiju Bawra in that Basant Bahar is based on Kannada novel Hamsageethe by legendary novelist TaRaSu. Hamsa means swan and Geethe means song. “It is believed that before a swan dies, it will sing without opening its mouth. That mutter of melody is believed to be unmatched since any scene of lyricism falls short of its reach.” Clearly, Basant Bahar was intended to showcase the skills of Shankar Jaikishan. However, I feel that Shailendra’s lyrics are simply great and you take away the lyrics the swan dies!
The Actress Kumkum
Shailendra was born in Rawalpindi and brought up in Mathura. But, he had a Bihar connection in that his ancestral place Akhtiyarpur is in Ara district of Bihar.
Kumkum was also born Zaibunnissa in Hussainabad, Sheikhpura Bihar. She was the discovery of Guru Dutt (as was Waheeda Rehman) and the CID song Ye hai Bombay meri jaan was picturised on her.
She was trained in Kathak by the famous Shambhu Maharaj and she danced in 1960 movie Kohinoor on a song lip-synced by Dilip Kumar and sung exceptionally beautifully by Mohammad Rafi in Raag Hamir, Tintal: Madhuban mein Radhika naache re (Shakeel – Naushad – Rafi).
In this song too, she is Radhika and her mudras are simply awesome.
Lyrics
Irrespective of what TaRaSu intended in the novel Hamsageethe on which the movie Basant Bahar is based, the lyrics by Shailendra are simply beautiful.
Jhinjhoti is a raaga named after an apsara and Hindi films songs based on it (my own observation) often bring in feelings of self-pity such as in “Tum mujhe youn bhula na paaoge” and “Mere mehboob tujhe” and of course the Mamta song picturised on Suchitra Sen: “Rehte the kabhi jinake dil mein hum jaan se bhi pyaron ki tarah”. Ghungru ki tarah bajta hi raha hoon is another case in point.
Here too, Shailendra has brought out self-pity of the singer-dancer in comparison to the sauten (the other woman), except that she is emoting for another person (such as in Chhote Nawab song: Ghar aaja ghir aaue badra):
Ja ja re ja, balamwa
Sautan ke sang raat bitayi
Kahe karat ab jhuthi batiya
Ja ja re ja, balamwa
Gair ke ghar kari raat jagayi
Mose kahe tere bina nind na aayi
Kaiso harajayi daiyya
Ja ja re ja, balamwa
Kandhe laga laye bindiya kisi ki
Janu main churayi tune nindiya kisi ki
Laaj naa aayi tohe
Ja re ja, ja re ja, ja re ja balamwa
Please Enjoy the Song I have put up as my second most favourite song of Lata Mangeshkar: Ja ja re ja balamwa…
Rajinder Krishan Song of the Week (RKSOW) Week #5 Hamse aaya na gaya
Rajinder Krishan, Madan Mohan and Talat Mahmood
In the last song and elsewhere many times before, I have mentioned that the most memorable songs of Lata Mangeshkar were composed by her bhaiya Madan Mohan. These were penned either by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan or by Rajinder Krishan.
Of course, Rajinder Krishan has many such Lata songs; eg, Youn hasaraton ke daag, Unako ye shikayat hai and Tumhi mere mandir tumhi meri pooja.
In my Rajinder Krishan Song of the Week (RKSOW) I also introduced you to his male songs; eg, Phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhayi hai with Madan Mohan.
That was from Jahan Ara. This is from a farcical comedy: Dekh Kabira Roya, a 1957 Amiya Chakravarty movie.
Just like the Jahan Ara songs, this too was sung by Talat Mahmood.
Lyrics
There is this quality in Rajinder Krishan’s lyrics which is like trying to touch the winds. There is that hole-in-the-heart called ruefulness. The best part is that he and Madan Mohan used this song in a farcical comedy.
Lets examine the lyrics:
Hamse aayaa na gaya tumse bulaya naa gaya
Faaslaa pyaar me dono se mitaaya naa gaya
Vo ghadi yaad hai jab tumse mulaqaat hui
Ek ishaara hua do haath badhe baat hui
Dekhate dekhate din dhal gaya aur raat hui
Vo samaa aaj talak dil se bhulaya naa gaya
Hamse aya na gaya
Kya khabar thi ke mile hain to bichhadne ke liye
Kismate apni banayi hain bigadne ke liye
Pyaar kaa baag basaya tha ujadne ke liye
Is tarah ujda ke phir hamse basaya naa gaya
Hamse aya na gaya
Yad rah jaati hai aur waqt guzar jata hai
Phul khilata hai magar khil ke bikhar jata hai
Sab chale jate hain phir dard e jigar aata hai
Daag jo tune diya dil ne mitaya na gaya
Hamae aya na gaya
Raag Bageshri Tal Dadra
Bageshri is well suited for both ras or shringar: Virah and Karuna. Shankar Jaikishan used Karuna in one of my favourites in this raag: Jao jao Nand le lala tun jhoote. Madan Mohan used both here.
The Tal is the same as that for the last song, Dadra: Lag ja gale and you can feel the symmetry of the Tal.
The song is picturised on the middle brother of the trio: Anoop Kumar; the elder being Ashok Kumar and younger being Kishore Kumar (they were together in another comedy: Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi). He is singing it to Shobha Khote. He was Mohan in the movie and she was Kalpana.
My Own Poetry
It is called:
…JI KAR TO MIL NA PAAYE
However, in life there are other means of communications that are even more important than words:
Love.
Silence.
Aansu, especially when Love and Silence need to be supplemented.
Hasrat Jaipuri and Aansu
Just like the litmus test for a heroine in Hindi movies was and probably is that she should have done the role of a courtesan (the best actresses did that: Vyjayanthimala, Madhubala, Rekha, Suchitra Sen, Meena Kumari and even Hema Malini), the litmus test of a lyricist was the Aansu song. Each one wanted his (rarely her) Aansu song to become memorable.
Hasrat Jaipuri came up with two really memorable Aansu songs: Aansu bhari hain ye jeevan ki raahen and this one. I have preferred the second one as he raised Aansu to being the language of his heart (Dil ki zubaan) and indeed the mirror of his heart.
And, to give credit to this great poet and lyricist, he used – hold your breath – the expression Dil ki zubaan not for a female (as most lyricists used) but for a man: Rajendra Kumar. He actually sheds this liquid during the song! Words are words but Love, Silence and Aansu are even more precious.
Indeed, as portrayed by Hasrat ji, the song itself is an expression of his sorrow (Ye nagma mere gham ka bayan hai)!
Sulagte Aansu
One would think that Aansu, being liquid, would quench the fire. Nay, it is totally other way round. And hence, most poets and lyricists have easily used the word ‘Sulagte‘ with Aansu.
Majrooh used it in the Tukade hain mere dil ke Ai yaar tere aansu (Ai jaan ye sulagta gham de de meri aankhon ko). Hasrat used it here: Aankh se tapki jo chingari … ye jeevan jaise sulagta toofaan hai.
Here is my own titled:
Sulagte Aansu
वो लौटा रहें हैं मेरा सामान,
और जला रहे हैं सब कुछ,
मेरी आरज़ू है सितमगर
मेरे अश्क भी जला दें I
ताके दिल के समुन्दर में
वो तूफ़ान फिर ना उभरे;
Shankar Jaikishan
In the good old days, when we used to listen to songs on the Radio, these used to be introduced as, for example:
“Geet ke bol likhe hain Hasrat Jaipuri ne, unhen sangeet se sajaya hai Shankar Jaikishan ne aur geetkaar hain Mohammad Rafi.”
Adornment of music makes the lyrics come alive and add to their meaning. You have to give it to S-J, as always that their composition and music help you complete the picture of the protagonist’s emotions, in this case Rajendra Kumar. No one could have done a better job.
Please Enjoy:
Ye aansu mere dil ki zubaan hain.. (All over the net I have found the lyrics showing a singular Hai rather than Hain. The latter, that is, Hain is the correct one as normally you use tears as plural)
Ye aansu mere dil ki zubaan hain
Main royun to ro dein aansu
Mai hans doon to hans de aansu
Ye aansu mere dil ki zubaan hain
Aankh se tapki jo chingari, har aansu me chhabi tumhari
Cheer ke mere dil ko dekho, bahate lahu me preet tumhari
Ye jeevan jaise sulaga toofaan hain
Ye aansu mere dil ki zubaan hain
Jeevan-path par jeevan sathi, sath chale ho munh na modo
Dard-o-gam ke dorahe par, mujhko tadapta youn na chhodo
Ye nagma mere gam ka bayaan hai
Ye aansu mere dil ki zubaan hain
I hoped you liked my choice of Hasrat Jaipuri Song of the Week #5.
Rajinder Krishan Song of the Week (RKSOW) Week#4 Na jhatko zulf se paani
Songs Describing the Beauty of Women
Shakeel Badayuni was the only lyricist who had a hat-trick of Filmfare Awards from 1961 to 63. The first two out of these three were songs describing the beauty of women; viz, Chaudhvinh ka chand ho (Guru Dutt describing the beauty of Waheeda Rehman) and Husnwale tera jawab nahin (Rajendra Kumar describing Asha Parekh’s beauty).
Of course, almost all lyricists of fame have covered themselves in glory with such songs.
And what have the women done whilst listening to such descriptions of their beauty being sung to them, more often than not in the voice of Mohammad Rafi? They have tried to give those looks ranging from shy fascination to quizzical amusement and in the process managed to look even more seductive and even coy.
Zulf as Beauty Symbol
Aankhen and Honth are of course of particular interest to the lyricists. These are as they exist around the world with any number of songs made on Eyes and Lips. Just one example of the popularity of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Spanish Eyes would tell you about the point I am making.
However, a typically and uniquely focus for Indian lyricsts has been Zulf or Zulfen. You can expect a Rajesh Khanna singing to Mumtaz at the height of his career: Ye reshmi zulfen, ye nargisi aankhen, inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi. Then there is Sanjeev Kumar singing to Indrani Mukherjee: Tumhari zulf ke saaye mein sham kar lunga. Another one sings to his lady love: Bikhra ke zulfen chaman mein na aana. The one who crossed all limits was the one who sang: Tu mere saamne hai, teri zulfen hain khuli….main bhala hosh mein kaise rahun.
Surely, people around the world must have been amused about Indian male’s fixation for Zulfen. Guys who are separated think of Zulfen as the first loss; eg, Teri zulfon se judayi to nahin maangi thi.
Rajinder Krishan and Ravi
In such a scenario, I think, Rajinder Krishan can be excused for letting the hero (Biswajeet) notice on the wet body of the heroine (Rajshree), of all the things, Zulf. Many around the world would say: “Hair today, gone tomorrow.” But, as far as Indians are concerned hair are here to stay forever and ever.
Ravi was one music director who learnt music by observation but managed to learn far better than those formally trained. What is more he even learnt Hindustani classical music and many of his songs are raaga based. This one is in Raag Pilu or Peelu, Tal Kaherava. Pilu is, as it is a raag of devotion and piety and if you look at the hero Biswajeet, you would notice that he is full of these two feelings and not seduction which would be the case, say, in Shammi Kapoor’s song Is rang badalti duniya mein insaan ki neeyat theek nahin (Hasrat – Shankar Jaikishan – Mohammad Rafi) or Joy Mukherjee singing to Asha Parekh: Aa ja re aa zara (Love In Tokyo).
Rajshree
Between the two; Biswajeet and Rajshree, she is the one who is using seduction by – as Somerset Maugham would say – looking at him with “practised innocence” all throughout.
She is the daughter of the celebrated film-maker V Shantaram from his second wife Jayshree whom V Shantaram married at the age of 40, after 20 years of his first marriage to a 12 years old Vimlabai who gave a traditional welcome to Jayshree after her husband married her. She, Vimlabai that is, drew the line only when her husband married for the third time Sandhya. Jayshree and Sandhya have acted in V Shantaram’s movies and sometimes together.
Rajshree is married to Greg Chapman in America three years after she toured America with Raj Kapoor for the shooting of his movie Around The World. Lucky for Biswajeet that Shehnai, the movie in which the present song featured was released in 1964 and much before Rajshree was jhatkaoing her Zulf for none of the Indians but an American.
Lyrics
I have always considered Rajinder Krishan as having extraordinary imagination. I have highlighted for you parts wherein he let his imagination seek expression:
Na jhatko zulf se paani ye moti phoot jayenge
Tumhara kuchc na bigdega magar dil toot jayenge
Na jhatko zulf se paani
Ye bheegi raat ye bheega badan ye husn ka aalam
Ye sab andaz mil kar do jahan ko loot jayenge
Na jhatko zulf se paani
Ye naazuk lab hain ya aapas me do lipti hui kaliyan
Zara inko alag kar do tarannum phoot jayenge
Na jhatko zulf se paani
Hamari jaan le lega ye neechi aankh ka jaadu
Chalo achha hua mar kar jahan se chhoot jayenge
Na jhatko zulf se paani
Mohammad Rafi
I regard Mohammad Rafi as the best singer in all genre’s of music. However, the passion with which he sang the songs describing the beauty of women leaves me stunned. And here and elsewhere he does so effortlessly. I am sure Rajshree would have got drenched not just in water.
Shehnai
This 1964 movie was produced and directed by SD Narang and is not based on a musical instrument or on the lifetime of a musician. On the other hand, the film is about n IAF pilot’s widow who goes through hardship and loneliness in order to fulfil her husband’s last wish to make her son an Air Force pilot. It is anybody’s guess as to why they named it Shehnai!
These posts are reproduction and compilation of my daily posts (three in a day) on my Facebook Page called Lyrical since I have held Lyrics as my favourite part of the song.
So far, on Lyrical, I have taken up ten lyricists of great fame (not in any particular order or ranking):
1. Shailendra. The opening song that I selected was Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai.
2. Rajinder Krishan with his Mujhase mat poochh mere ishq mein.
3. Kaifi Azmi with his Jaane kyaa dhoondati rehati hain ye aankhen mujh mein.
4. Sahir Ludhianvi with Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko.
5. Majrooh Sultanpuri with Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai.
6. Jaan Nisar Akhtar with his Mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafai hai.
7. Hasrat Jaipuri with his Aansu bhari hain ye jeevan ki raahen.
8. Qamar Jalalabadi with his Ai meri zindagi tujhe dhoondun kahan.
9. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan with his Mera sundar sapna toot gaya.
10. Indeevar with his Bade armaan se rakha hai balam.
Tonight we take up the eleventh lyricist DN Madhok’s creation. Dina Nath Madhok, as most of you would be aware, is from the trio called ‘first generation of lyricists’ that also included Kavi Pradeep and Kidar Sharma.
He was born on 22 Oct 1902 in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan), nearly 14 years before Shakeel Badayuni. He arrived in Bombay in 1931 and in the very next year wrote lyrics for the songs of Radhey Shyam. He wrote – hold your breath – 29 songs for that film. He also helped in composing songs for the film but wasn’t given credit for it.
He was a very versatile personality. In the second year, after Radhey Shyam, he directed three movies, all with English names: Lure of Gold, Flame of Love and Three Warriors.
He continued directing movies, writing screen-plays, dialogues and lyrics; like Gulzar did many decades after him. He wrote lyrics for such movies as Nadi Kinare (1939), Musafir (1940), Pagal (1940), Ummeed (1941), Bansari (1943), Nurse (1943), Bela (1947), Bhakt Surdas (1942), and Tansen (1943).
Now here is something that would interest Shakeel Badayuni fans: Whilst Naushad Ali is credited with bringing Shakeel into the movies, DN Madhok was credited with bringing Naushad into the movies! Whilst Shakeel’s first lyrics were in Naushad’s film, the 1947 movie Dard, Naushad’s first song in the movies was on the lyrics of DN Madhok!
Day #1, Song #1 Man ka taar hila jaa more man ka taar hila jaa
The name of the 1940 movie was Prem Nagar that starred Prof Ramanand and Husna Banu (they sang for themselves). Here are the songs that Naushad composed in his first movie on the lyrics of DN Madhok:
1. Main Kali Baag Ki Tu Bhora Kaala
Husna Banu Naushad D N Madhok Husna Banu
2. Man Ke Taar Hila Jaa More Man Ke Taar
Prof. Ramanand Naushad D N Madhok Prof. Ramanand
3. Mat Bolo Bahaar Ki Batiyaan
Bimla Kumari, Prof. Ramanand Naushad D N Madhok
Bimla Kumari, Prof. Ramanand
4. Tum Bin Chain Na Aaye Sajni
Prof. Ramanand Naushad D N Madhok Prof. Ramanand
5. Ambua Pe Baitha Panchhi Kya Boli Bole
Prof. Ramanand, Husna Banu Naushad D N Madhok Prof. Ramanand, Husna Banu
Lets listen to the second song, if not for anything, but for the fact that Shakeel’s Mother India song: Nagri nagri dwaare dwaare had lyrics similar to it.
Please enjoy: Man ka taar hila jaa more man ka taar hila jaa….
man ke taar hila ja mere man ke taar hila ja
man ke ek taare par bande pritam pritam gaa le
man ke ek taare par bande pritam pritam gaa le
man ke taar baja kar murakh man ke taar baja kar murakh
jivan ka sukh pa le jivan ka sukh pa le
dag mag dole o more sajan dag mag dole o more sajan
naiya paar laga ja naiya paar laga ja
man ke taar hila ja mere man ke taar hila ja
nagri nagri dware dware jhum raha hai pritam pyare
koun nagriya ho more sajan koun nagriya ho more sajan
man ke taar hila ja mere man ke taar hila ja
man ke taar hila ja mere man ke taar hila ja
Day #1, Song #2
Is paap ki duniya se ab aur kahin le chal
We have just started with our 11th (not in any particular order or ranking) great lyricist: Dina Nath Madhok belonging to the trio of the first generation of lyricists in Hindi movies together with Kavi Pradeep and Kidar Sharma.
I always give you the first song as the song of my choice and then start chronologically.
Chronologically, his first movie as lyricist was 88 years ago, in the year 1932. The name of the movie was Radhey Shyam, directed by Anand Prasad Kapoor and Roshan Lal Shorey. It starred: Khurshid Begum, Sunita Devi, Mohan and Radha.
DN Madhok paired with Nawab Khan and made the following 29 songs (I couldn’t find one) for the movie:
1. Aaja Tu Mere Lal Tujhe God Khilaaun
2. Aao Gokul Kee Baar
3. Chatur Naar Bharmaya Maat Tohe
4. Chhalak Na Jaaye Gori Gagari
5. Chinta Na Karo Aayenge Yahi
6. Duniya Jhuti Duniya Khoti
7. Ghat Ghat Ratein Teen Lok
8. Hriday Me Thes Lagi Kaisi
9. Is Pyaari Booti Se Bhaiya Jo Prem Laga Lenge
10. Jai Yadav Raaye Om Jay Yaadav Raaye
11. Jamna Ke Neer Teer Gokul Ka Wasi
12. Jap Man Raadha Krishna Muraari
13. Jhoola Jhoolat Hai Nandlaal
14. Jhoola Jhulaaun Main Ban Ke Prem Bhikhari
15. Kaal Tero Gokul Me
16. Kaal Tero Gokul Mein
17. Kaise Guzaarun Ratiyan
18. Kaun Jogi Hue Kaanon Mein Munda
19. Kit Gaye Hain Baanke Bihaari
20. Kya Naam Hai Yah Pyaare
21. Loota Re Meraa Jaga Ke Joban
22. Main Nahi Samjhaa Mere Bhagwaan
23. Mero To Girdhar Gopal Dusra Na Koi
24. Naa Jaa Shyam Murari Sada Ji Dhadke
25. Naachat Hai Muralidhar Mohan
26. Om Om Sumaro Man Me Om Naam Pyaara
27. So Ja Tu Mere Jaaye
28. Sun Kuk Tihari Vishnu Ji
Okay, I solved the mystery of the missing song. At #16 and #17, I have given two songs staring with Kaal tero. Actually, there are three:
1. Kaal Tero Gokul Mein Nandlal Vruj bal kahaye.
2. Kaal Tero Gokul Mein paapi pootna maar mukaayi.
3. Kaal Tero Gokul Mein Vrindavan raas rachayen Gopi naar sang.
See, how I solved it. So there are actually 29 songs penned by him in his first movie Radhe Shyam.
None of the songs or lyrics are available.
He wrote ten songs for his next movie in 1933: Khubsurat Bala:
1. Aai Nainon Ki Bahaar
2. Baanke Gopal Laal Braj Ke Gopal Laal
3. He Govind He Gopal Tere Gun Gaoon
4. Humne Tumhein Pehchan Liya
5. Jag Ek Fasaana Kahaani Hai
6. Main To Preet Kiye Pachhtaai
7. Oh Baanke Chitvanwaali
8. Pyaasi Bilakh Rahi Barso Se
9. Us Mohini Ne Man Moh Liyaa
10. Zara Hamri Nagri Aaja Nainon Me
None are available.
His next movie for lyrics was in 1936: Jawalamukhi.
I couldn’t find any information.
His next movie in 1937 was Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag. Yet another movie for which no information is available except to know that Navinchandra acted in it.
His next movie in 1937 Dilfarosh was directed by him and starred Ishwarlal and Malti.Banne Khan composed his following songs:
1. Saanch Kahoo Sajne Mere Baat Sune Koi, Yaar Bahoot Jag Mein Par Saath
2. Tope Sautan Ne Kaise Jaadu Kiye, Baire Sautan Ka Tu To Ho Liya
3. Bhar Gaye Jeb Musafir Chala Safar Pe Tann Ke Gaade Jode
4. Pardesi Ab Desh Sidhaaro, To Bin Kahoo Na Aaye Hai, Swagat Karo Mere
5. Aa Pardanashi Tujhko Main Aankhon Mein Bithaa Loo, Pardo Mein Chupaa
6. Baake Chitvan Teekhe Naina, Surat Bholi Bhale Hai, Naagan Kali
7. Mann Ka Musafir Chala Safar Pe Tann Ke Gaade Jode, Aatam Raam Chalaane
8. Saanch Kahoo Sajne
9. Duniya Ek Musafirkhana Koi Jaaye Aur Koi Aaye, Aatam Ram
None of these are available.
His next movie in 1937: Shama Parwana was again directed by him and starred Ishwarlal and Dixit.
He wrote the following songs for Banne Khan:
1. Phursat Kabhi Paaoge Bhi Shokhee Se Ada Se, Ye Chand Ke Tukade
2. Daman Mein Chupaa Le Prem Jyot Pagle, Kahe Bhujh Na Jaaye
3. Chande De Chandani Chande Kane, Mandaa Na Bolana Bhande Kane
4. Gokul Ke Gwaalan Aaye Hai Gokul Ke Gwaalan, Dudh Mein Dhuhoo
5. Khandge Naaz Pahloo Mein To Paikka Dil Mein Rahne Do, Sitam Ke Yaad
6. Mujhse Na Pooch Hale-Hale Andalee Bezaar, Kaliya Bhi Khoon Rotee Hai
7. Ab Rayin Bhaye Saajan Na Ja, Jaana Hai To Jaana Bhor Bhaye
8. Tassvar Mein Mere Kal Raat Hai Aur Yaar Ke Aankhen, Hiran Ke Masti
9.Nigaahe Naaz Bhare Vaye Vaye, Chale Aate Hai Pare Vaye Vaye
10. Shama Ke Baat Na Maane Kabhi Parwane Ne, Zindagi Phuk Ke Rakh De
Still none of the songs are available.
That brings us to the year 1938.
Zamana was his first movie in 1938 and indeed the only one. It was a Ram Daryani movie starring Nazir and Padmadevi.
There were following ten songs of the movie composed by Sunder Das and penned by Deena Nath Madhok:
1. Saawan Ke Ruth Bhaaye Sajaniyaa, Saawan Ke Ruth Bhaaye Hai
2. Sote Mein Humse Milaa Hai Preetam Pyaara, Sune Sakhee Kaan Mein Pyaara

8. Ye Dard Jara Dam Le, Karwat To Badlane De
9. More Aangana Mein Banse Bajaa Na, Tann Mann Ke Sudh Bisara Ja
10. Is Paap Ke Duniya Se Ab Aur Kahe Le Chal
We shall be taking two songs of the movie today.
Lets take song #10 sung by Amirbai Karnataki (indeed, most of the songs were sung by her). She doesn’t need any introduction. However, it is worth recalling that she won the heart of Mahatma Gandhi with her rendition of Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye and it became his favourite hymn after that.
Please enjoy: Is paap ki duniya se ab aur kahin le chal…
Is paap ki duniya se
Ab aaj kahi le chal
Is paap ki duniya se
Ab aaj kahi le chal
Cheet chain jahaan paaye
Cheet chain jahaan paaye
Le chal tu wahin le chal
Is paap ki duniya se ab
Aaj kahi le chal
Logo ki jafaao se
Duniya ki nigaaho se
Logo ki jafaao se
Duniya ki nigaaho se
Aa door kahi le chal
Aa door kahi le chal
Ab aaj kahi le chal
Is paap ki duniya se
Ab aaj kahi le chal
Is paap ki duniya se
Ab aaj kahi le chal
Cheet chain jahaan paaye
Cheet chain jahaan paaye
Le chal tu wahin le chal
Is paap ki duniya se
Ab aaj kahi le chal
Is paap ki duniya se
Ab aaj kahi le chal.
Day #1, Song #3
Aye dard zara dam le
You would have noticed that after starting chronologically from his first movie in 1932: Radhe Shyam it has been tough going. Until the 1938 movie Zamana, his seventh one, except to find out the titles of songs and cast, I couldn’t find much information or to find sound tracks at least in audio.
Zamana was a movie directed by Nazir and Padmadevi and with Jeevan in another role. However, most of the sites (including IMDb) bring out that the lead cast of the movie was Jeevan and Padmadevi!
I noticed this fact long time back; if one site has got something wrong, all of them without exception, also get it wrong (the pitfalls of copy-paste). Very often the lyrics of songs are particularly the case in point.
We were fortunate that some of the songs of 1938 movie are available. I gave you a beautiful one sung by Amirbai Karnataki.
Here is another.
This too was sung by Amirbai Karnataki.
Please enjoy: Aye dard zara dam le…
Aye dard zara dam le
Karwat to badalne de
Aye dard zara dam le
Karwat to badalne de
Armaan bhare dil ko
Armaan bhare dil ko
Pahloo mein sambhalne de
Aye dard zara dam le
Karwat to badalne de
Dam le ke mere armaan
Aankho mein utar aaye
Dam le ke mere armaan
Aankho mein utar aaye
Ro kar hi mere dil ke
Ro kar hi mere dil ke
Armaan nikalne de
Aye dard zara dam le
Karwat to badalne de
Parwaane ke jalne se
Jalti hai tu kyun shamaa
Parwaane ke jalne se
Jalti hai tu kyun shamaa
Likhaa hai agarche hi
Likhaa hai agarche hi
Jaltaa hai to jalne de
Aye dard zara dam le
Karwat to badalne de
Aye dard.
Day #2, Song #4
Kyon prem ka baag lagaya
Now that I have given you two songs from the 1938 Ram Daryani movie Zamana starring Nazir and Padmadevi, you would have straightway noticed two things:
1. The quality of lyrics by Deena Nath Madhok and composition by Sunder Das Bhatia are rather good.
2. DN Madhok belonged to the first generation of lyricists in Hindi films industry together with Kavi Pradeep and Kidar Sharma. He is the one who simplified the lyrics so that in short lines these went straight to your heart.
I knew the going would be very tough because we were to deal with 1930s and information won’t be available. I have tried to dish out as much as I could.
By this time, other than the first song for the 1940 movie Prem Nagar after which we started chronologically, I found 68 songs of his seven movies and I could give you only two!
His next movie in the year 1939 was Nadi Kinare, a Manubhai Vyas movie starring M Kumar and Indubala. DN Madhok and PL Santoshi penned the following 13 songs that were composed by Gyan Dutt:
1. Hum Jal Ke Pariyaa, Jal Main Hai Sansaar Hamara, Lahro Ke
2. Mere Mann Ke Been Bajaa, Been Bajaa, Kuch Ga, Sur Se Sur
3. Duniya Deewane, Duniya Deewane, Koi Kahe Hai Jigar
4. Woh Dil He Nahe Jismein Na Ho Chaah Kise Ke, Woh Aankh
5. Nadi Pukare Aao Sajan Nadi Kinare, Gode Mein Le Chand Ko
6. Saajan Nikle Chor, Meethe Meethe Kar Mose Batiyaa, Jiya Chrayo More
7. Mann Kyon Na Dhara Tune Dheer, Zaahir Kar De Kyon Deewane
8. Yaad Tere Aaye Hai, Kali Ghata Chaye Hai, Mere Sajanwaa Aa
9. Kyon Ye Khayaale-Yaar Hume Sataaye Hai, Beete Huye Ke Yaad
10. Aaraam Kaha Dil Jo Pada Gairo Ke Paale, Muflis Ko
11. Kyon Prem Ka Baag Lagaaya Pagle, Aasha Ke Sunder Phoolo Se
12. Toot Gaye Woh Taar Pyaare Toot Gaye
13. Banaau Chaah Masaaledaar
To start with lets take us Indubala singing song #11. She is the lead cast of the movie and hence singing for herself.
Please enjoy: Kyon prem ka baag lagaya…
kyo o o o o o on
prem kaa baag lagaaya
pagle ae ae
kyon prem kaa baag lagaaya
pagle ae ae
kyon prem kaa baag lagaaya
aasha ke sundar phoolon se
kyon toone sajaaya aa aa
aasha ke sundar phoolon se
kyon toone sajaayaa
kyon prem kaa baag lagaaya
pagle…..ae ae
jab tak a a maali
prem se seenche ae

tab tak khili rahengi kaliyaan
phooli rahe ae ae phulwaa aa aari

khoye huye prem pe parinda
khoya prem jagat mein pagle
kab hai kisne paaya
khoya prem jagat mein pagle
kab ha…i
kisne paaya
kyun un un ah
prem kaa…aa
baag
lagaa aa aaya
Day #2, Song #5
Duniya deewaani, duniya deewaani, koi kahe haaye jigar, koi kahe dil, koi kahe chori chori aa ke sajan mil
Today, we started taking up songs of the 1939 Manibhai Vyas movie Nadi Kinare starring M Kumar, Indubala, Sitara Devi.
A total of thirteen songs were penned by DN Madhok and PL Santoshi and composed by Gyan Dutt. We took up one sung by Indubala for herself: Kyon prem ka baag lagaya.
Now, here we have one sung by Sitara Devi and Kantilal.
Please enjoy: Duniya deewaani, duniya deewaani, koi kahe haaye jigar, koi kahe dil, koi kahe chori chori aa ke sajan mil..
Day #2, Song #6
Sajan nikle chor
We have taken two songs of the 1939 Manibhai Vyas movie Nadi Kinare. These songs were from a list of 13 songs written by Deena Nath Madhok and Pyarelal Santoshi and composed by Gyan Dutt.
Here is now a song sung by Gyan Dutt, Rajkumari and Indubala.
Please recall Rajkumari Dubey started singing even before Naushad made his debut in Hindi movies.
Hence, on the sets of Pakeezah, when Naushad saw her singing in a chorus because of the difficult times she was going through, he gave her a solo to sing in Pakeezah: Najariya ki maari.
Those were the hard days of Hindi movies. A class singer like Rajkumari Dubey didn’t have enough to make both ends meet. These days, there are playback singers who have just one hit song in their lives and they have enough to last a lifetime!
Please enjoy: Sajan nikle chor…
Day #3, Song #7
Dagaa de ke chale gaye
After starting from the year 1932 on first day (after the first post of 1940 movie Prem Nagar) with his first ever movie Radhey Shyam, we took up, on Day #2, three really delightful songs of 1939 (his seventh as lyricist) movie Nadi Kinare.
His next movie in 1940 was a Jayant Desai movie Aaj Ka Hindustan starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Rose, Sitara Devi, Ishwarlal, Noor Mohammad Charlie. Except for Prithviraj Kapoor, they all sang for themselves.
He wrote the following songs that were composed by Khemchand Prakash.
Ladies and gentlemen, you already know about Khemchand Prakash, composer of so many KL Saigal songs and rated as the best composer. He was also one of those in Hindi films who died young, at the age of 41 (on 10 Aug 1949), of Cirrhosis.
1. Dagaa De Ke Chale Gaye Ho Baalam Jamna Ke Pool Paar, Ghar Aaja
2. Hai Paape Jiya Naahi Maane, Naahi Maane Re, Peer Paraye Koi Na Jaane
3. Ye Pyaare Chahat, Ye Meethe Ulfat, Hamare Tumse, Tumhare Humse
4. Baala Joban Naahi Maane, Pade Na Mohe Chain Saiya, Sola Baras Dukh
5. Charakha Chalaao Bahno, Katho Ye Kache Dhaage, Dhaage Ye Kah Rahe Hai
6. Aaj Ban Than Ke Unko Rijaaunge, Kuch Kahenge To Main Ruth Jaaunge
7. Bhanwara Matlab Ko Pehchaane, Preet Karan Ke Reet Na Jaane, Pyaar Ke
8. Itnaa Dukh Sahne Pe Bhi Devi Mere Gambheer Hai, Main Sarapa Zulm Hoo

Day #3, Song #8
We have just started taking up the songs of the 1949 Jayant Desai movie Aaj Ka Hindustan. Eight of Deena Nath Madhok’s songs were composed by Khemchand Prakash.
The second and the last song from the movie that I am giving you was also sung by Sitara Devi but this time with Kantilal.
Please enjoy: Dagaa de ke chale gaye ho baalam…

Day #3, Song #9
Ghar ghar deep jale ghar ghar shobha chhayi
We just took up two songs of the 1940 Jayant Desai movie Aaj Ka Hindustan. Coincidentally, the next movie in which DN Madhok’s songs featured was another 1940 Jayant Desai movie Diwali starring Madhuri, Motilal, Vasanti and Ishwarlal.

Day #4, Song #10
Hum ko lagi hai tumse
In the first three days, not counting the opening song from the 1940 movie Prem Nagar, the debut movie of Naushad, we finished with 103 delightful songs of Deena Nath Madhok from 10 movies.
We had taken up one of 14 songs of the 1940 movie Diwali composed beautifully by Khemchand Prakash.

Humko lagi hai tumse
Humko lagi hai tumse
Kuchh aisi lagan haaye
Aavo to bahal jaaye
Jaavo to jiyaa jaaye.
Day #4, Song #11
Kit gaye hamaare saiyaan ajahoon na aaye
Throughout the day I was listening to the beautiful songs of the 1940 Jayant Desai movie Diwali starring Motilal, Madhuri, Ishwarlal and Vasanti and yet another time realised what a great pair DN Madhok and Khemchand Prakash were; both considered two of the greatest in their fields.
The next one was sung by Miss Iqbal and Kantilal.
Please enjoy: Kit gaye hamaare saiyaan ajahoon na aaye…
(The stills in the video are NOT from this movie but from the 1935 movie Anarkali)
Day #4, Song #12
Apni shaam bayi aur jagwalon ka hua savera
As I said, DN Madhok wrote all of 14 songs for the 1940 Jayant Desai movie Diwali. Left to myself I would want to give you most of them, if not all of 14.
But, after giving you three, it is time to move on to the next movie in 1940: Musafir, a Chandubhuj Doshi movie starring Noor Mohammad Charlie, Khursheed, Ishwarlal, Yakub, and Vasanti.

Day #5, Song #13
Akeli na jaiyyo Radhe Shri Jamuna ke teer
On the 4th day, with the 12th song, we were into the ninth year of Deena Nath Madhok’s career that started with the 1932 movie Radhe Shyam. Unfortunately, I couldn’t access any of the 29 songs of the movie even in audio form.
On 4th day we covered 11 of his movies with 113 songs (not counting the first song from 1940 movie Prem Nagar that I gave you out of chronological order).
When we broke, we had just started accessing the songs of 1940 movie Musafir. Out of his ten songs, we had taken up just one.
Here is another one written by him, composed by Gyan Dutt and sung by Vasanti (you may find parallel with later day songs copying this one): Akeli na jaiyyo Radhe Shri Jamuna ke teer…
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Akeli na akeli na
Jaiyyo ho raadhe
Shree jamuna ke teer
Akeli na akeli na
Jaiyyo ho raadhe
Shree jamuna ke teer
Shree jamuna ke teer
Shree jamuna ke teer

Day #5, Song #14
Main kali baag ki tu bnanvra kaala
That brings us to the 1940 AR Kardar movie Pagal starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhuri, Sitara Devi, Noor Mohammed Charlie, Khatoon, Trilok Kapoor and Sunalini Devi.
Prithviraj Kapoor played a doctor with psychological problems in a lunatic asylum.
What are his problems? Because of circumstances, he has to marry the sister of a woman he loves. This eventually makes him insane.
You may recall his son playing a similar role in Pagla Kahin Ka with a very good song by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shankar Jaikishan combine: Tum mujhe youn bhula na paoege. Hindi movies never let go of stories and songs.
In this movie DN Madhok paired with Khemchand Prakash and made the following songs.
Incidentally M Sadiq and SU Sunny were assistant directors to AR Kardar in the movie; both later turned into independent directors of some fame.
Kamal Amrohi was the story writer for the movie.
1. Prem Badariya Chaye Sakhee Re Prem Badariya Chaye, Le Kar More Mann
2. Choti Bade Suiyaa Re Jaale Ka Mora Kathana, Ek Sukh Paayo Maine
3. Sajan Hum Tum Bin Bhaye Udaas, Dekho Je Barsaat Hai Aaye, Mann Mein
4. Navaajhish Chahiye Itnee Jamine-Kuye-Jaana Ke, Ki Main Choti Se Ek
5. Baaman Ke Chori, Angiyaa Ko Atar Lagaa Ke Chale, Baaman Ke Chori
6. Main Kaun? Main Kaun? Main Kaun Bataaye Koi, Tum Ho Mere Raja
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any of the songs.
That brings us to the 1940 movie Prem Nagar, one of whose songs we started with in our journey in the career of Deena Nath Madhok.
I already mentioned to you that whereas Naushad was responsible for bringing lyricists Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shakeel Badayuni into the movies. In this movie DN Madhok who was already established for the last nine years gave a break to Naushad as composer and Music Director.
The movie starred Husna Banu as Maya and Rai Mohan as Chandu.
Prem Nagar is “a small, happy and contented village somewhere in India. A tiny spark of anger flared up a misunderstanding, a quarrel, jealousy, and greed: So grew envy. This envy burst out into a flame and the flame nearly destroyed the whole village.”
Mohan Bhavnani directed the movie.
DN Madhok and Naushad made the following songs:
1. Mat Bole Bahar Ke Batiyaa, Dhadak Gaye More Chatiyaa
2. Ramjee Chaalya Seeta Saath Ban Mein, Laxman Sang Mein Jaaye
3. Ambuvaa Pe Baitha Panchi Kya Bolee Bole, Jeevan Ka Raag
4. Main Kali Baag Ke Tu Bhauraa Kala, Mera Dukh Daridra Mitaa
5. Mann Ke Ek Taare Pe Bande Preetam Preetam Gaa Le
6. Aaye Re Pee Ke Nagariya Se Aaye Re, Saajan Ke Naina Se Naina
7. Tum Ho Aasha Ka Sansaar, Tum Ho Jeevan Ke Aadhar
8. Tum Bin Chain Na Aaye Sajnee, Tum Bin Chain Na Aaye
9. Ha-Ha Tu Mera Chelaa, Ha-Ha Tu Mere Chele, Ha-Ha Tu
10. Tum Bhaago Mahare Dilraakho Bhraata, Mera Dukh Daridra Mitaa
11. Mann Ke Taar Hilaa Ja, More Mann Ke Taar Hilaa Ja
12. Shyaam Kya Jaane Mahare Preet, Gopiyo Mein Baal Kunwaara Re
13. Gopiyaa Vallabh, Radheshyam, Jaanki Jeevan Seetaram
Ladies and gentlemen, songs of this movie are important to us as these are the first 13 songs composed by Naushad.
To start with lets take up Song #4 sung by Husna Bano for herself. We already took up Song #11: Mann ka taar hila jaa on the very first day as very first song with DN Madhok.
Please enjoy: Main kali baag ki tu bnanvra kaala…
mai kali bag ki mai kali bag ki
tu bhavra kala tu bhavra kala
mai madira ki pyali aur tu matvala
mai madira ki pyali aur tu matvala
mere naina balam kare ishare mero joban
mero joban sajan ankhiya mare
par tu bhola bhala par tu bhola bhala
mai kali bag ki tu bhavra kala
himmat hai kisi ki jo koi aankh mila le
himmat hai kisi ki jo koi aankh mila le
ban jaye hamara ban jaye hamara ya hame koi apna banale
ujadi hui basti hai mere man ki basa le
ujadi hui basti hai mere man ki basa le
mai kali bag ki mai kali bag ki
tu bhavra kala tu bhavra kala
Day #5, Song #15
Ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
Ladies and gentlemen, today, listening to the songs of 1940 M Bhavnani movie Prem Nagar overwhelmed me again. I don’t mind telling you that once again eyes got moist.
The reason is that this was the debut movie of Naushad, eight years after DN Madhok made his entry into Hindi movies with the 1932 movie Radhey Shyam.
Even in the beginning, Naushad’s songs are so typically Naushad. I have already given you two: Man ka taar hila jaa on the first day as Song #1 and Main kali baag mein tu bhanvra kaala.
The next one that I am giving you has also been sung by Husna Bano and Prof Ramanand for themselves.
Please enjoy: Ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole…
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
aa, jivan ka raag sunaye par haule haule
jivan ka raag sunaye par haule haule
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
kaun desh ka panchhi hai ye kaun desh ki boli
kaun desh ka panchhi hai ye kaun desh ki boli
panchhi man ka panchhi samjho
boli man ki bole khud ro le
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole
tu rona kahta hai jisko main kahti hu gana
tu rona kahta hai jisko main kahti hu gana
tu gana kahti hai jisko wo hai geet rulana
tu gana kahti hai jisko wo hai geet rulana
bhed jiya ke khole
bhed jiya ke khole
bhed jiya ke khole
bhed jiya ke khole
ambua pe baitha panchhi kya boli bole

I covered for you in the last five days Deena Nath Madhok’s career from 1932 (Radhey Shyam) to 1940 (Prem Nagar); a total of 14 movies with 132 songs. Please recall that for the first five movies no songs were available on the net and hence we missed out on these.
As we enter the year 1941, the tenth year in the career of DN Madhok, we come across the very first movie Dhandora (no Hindi movie with this name was ever made after this) directed by the actor-singer Noor Mohammad Charlie and starredHusn Banu, E. There were nine songs in the movie and all nine were penned by DN Madhok and composed by Gyan Dutt:

Day #7, Song #19
Haath mein hogi khali jholi
Today is our seventh day with Deena Nath Madhok; amongst the first generation of lyricists in Hindi films together with Kavi Pradeep and Kidar Sharma.
Lets take stock:
Considering that the first Indian movie ever made was Raja Harishchandra in 1913 and first talkie was Alam Ara in 1931, I have covered his lyrics from 1932 onwards; the first movie being: Radhey Shyam in which 29 of his songs appeared.
The playback singing started with Dhoop Chhaon in which Rai Chand Boral used the playback technique to replace the recording of songs by actors themselves as their dialogues used to be recorded since 1931 movie Alam Ara.
Hence, as you have already made out, DN Madhok is for us, one of the most important lyricists in the history of Hindi cinema.
Yesterday I gave you a song from the 1941 Chaturbhujh Doshi movie Pardesi starring Motilal, Khursheed, Sneh Prabha, E Billimoria, Kesarbai, Bhagwan Das, and Durgesh. Despite playback singing having been introduced in 1935 by RC Boral, most of the actors sang for themselves. I gave you one song: Mori atariya hai sooni Mohan nahin aaye sung by Snehprabha Pradhan and Khursheed.
We have 15 songs in this movie composed by one of the greatest composers: Khemchand Prakash. I have been listening to these songs since yesterday and I liked this second one immensely for its lyrics and composition. This too was sung by Snehprabha Pradhan.
Please enjoy: Haath mein hogi khali jholi…
Day #7, Song #20
Pehle jo mohabbat se inkaar kiya hota
Yesterday, we started taking up songs of the 1941 Chaturbhuj Doshi movie Pardesi and continued today.
So far, we have taken up two songs: Meri atariya hai sooni Mohan nahin aaye rendered beautifully by Snehprabha Pradhan and Khursheed (I have listened to it several times since). The second one was also a Snehprabha Pradhan song: Haath mein hogi khali jholi.
Here is a third one that is as well sung as the first two.
This was sung by Khursheed.
ab tere siwa koi aankho me nahi jachta
ab tere siwa koi aankho me nahi jachta
do roj to pardo me
do roj to pardo me guljaar kiya hota
do roj to pardo me guljaar kiya hota
pahle jo mohabbat se
maalum agar hota anjaam mohabbat ka
na dil hi diya hota
na dil hi diya hota na pyar kiya hota
na dil hi diya hota na pyar kiya hota
pahle jo mohabbat se inkaar kiya hota
main teri hu main tera, kaano mere kahna
aur bhag ke duniya se aankho me meri rahna
itna jo samajhte hum, chupke se tera baalma
na dil hi diya hota
na dil hi diya hota na pyar kiya hota
na dil hi diya hota na pyar kiya hota
pahle jo mohabbat se inkaar kiya hota
Day #7, Song #21
Do nain tihaare
Now here is a last song from the 1941 Chaturbhuj Doshi movie Pardesi starring Motilal, Khursheed, Sneh Prabha, E Billimoria, Kesarbai, Bhagwan Das, and Durgesh.
We have already enjoyed three of the 15 songs of the movie composed really superbly by Khemchand Prakash.
This fourth one was sung by Khursheed and Kanti Lal.
Please enjoy: Do nain tihaare…

aapas me more sajan lad gaye

aankho ki ladai me kyu dil ka bura ho
aankho ki ladai me kyu dil ka bura ho
khele hai koi daav koi pasia koi juaa
khele hai koi daav koi pasia koi juaa
sadke teri aankhe ke ajab vaar kiya hai
sadke teri aankhe ke ajab vaar kiya hai
yaha chot lagi, haay
yaha dard hua hai
yaha chot lagi, haay
yaha dard hua hai
mere dil me, mere jigar me
mere dil me, mere jigar me
tihaare naina gad gaye
tihaare naina gad gaye
aapas me more sajan lad gaye
ha lad gaye, haay lad gaye
do nain tihaare, do nain tihaare
aapas me more sajan lad gaye
ha lad gaye, haay lad gaye
do nain tihaare, do nain tihaare
Day #8, Song #22
Ik meethi nazar banke
We are starting the second week with this great lyricist Deena Nath Madhok who started his professional career in Hindi movies with the 1932 movie Radhey Shyam for which he wrote 29 songs but I couldn’t locate any.
I just finished giving you four songs from the 1941 Chaturbhuj Doshi movie Pardesi.
His next movie in 1941 was also a Chaturbhuj Doshi movie Sasural starring Motilal, Rajkumari, Madhuri, Noorjehan, Kantilal, Kasam, Bhagwan Das, Urmila Iqbal, and Iqbal.
Once again Gyan Dutt composed following songs penned by him:

Day #8, Song #23
Wo apna jaadu nigahon se aazma rahe hain
We had just started taking up songs of the 1941 Chaturbhuj Doshi movie Sasural, penned by DN Madhok and composed by Gyan Dutt.
The film was a romantic comedy about wrongful identification of a groom by his wife-to-be in a household consisting of a father, step-mother step-son some friends and several servants. It earned a good review.
The second song that I am giving you is also a Rajkumari song.
Please enjoy: Wo apna jaadu nigahon se aazma rahe hain…
wo apna jadu wo apna jadu
nigaho se aajma rahe hai
nigaho se aajma rahe hai
wo un se chup hai
wo un se chup hai
wo un se chup hai
maje mahobbat ke aa rahe hai
maje mahobbat ke aa rahe hai
najar mila ke wo aankho aankho me
kar rahe hai dilo ke ishare
najar mila ke wo aankho aankho me
kar rahe hai dilo ke ishare
wo unki aankho me chha rahe hai
wo unki aankho me chha rahe hai
wo unki aankho me chha rahe hai
wo unki aankho me chha rahe hai
ajab ladai ajab ladai
ajab ladai hajaro aankho ke ladane wale
lada lada ke wo unko apna bana rahe hai
wo unko apna bana rahe hai
wo unko apna bana rahe hai
wo unko apna bana rahe hai
wo un se chup hai
wo un se chup hai
wo un se chup hai
maje mahobbat ke aa rahe hai
maje mahobbat ke aa rahe hai
Day #8, Song #24
Is aankh mein jaadu hai
We are taking up songs of the 1941 movie Sasural. Please don’t forget that it was a romantic comedy at that time when tragedies did better at the box office.
The reviews, however, praised Motilal for his skill at this light-hearted genre’. Actress Nur Jahan (not to be confused with Noorjehan, singer) too earned accolades for her portrayal of a maid. Even her singing was praised.
For the third song, therefore, I am giving you a Motilal Sharma song.
Please enjoy: Is aankh mein jaadu hai…
is aankh me jadu hai ek aankh mein masti hai
is aankh me jadu hai ek aankh mein masti hai
in pardo mein poshida yaaro meri hasti hai
in pardo mein poshida yaaro meri hasti hai
is aankh me jadu hai ek aankh mein masti hai
jis maag mein khoi hai duniya hee mere dil ki
jis maag mein khoi hai duniya hee mere dil ki
in julf ke pecho mein in julf ke pecho mein
bhigi si wo kashti hai
in julf ke pecho mein bhigi si wo kashti hai
in pardo mein poshida yaaro meri hasti hai
is aankh mein jadu hai ek aankh mein masti hai
haye ram mein kya karo
kano mein sunane ki ek neeti kahani hai
kano mein sunane ki ek neeti kahani hai
bas is dile bismil mein
bas is dile bismil mein
hasrat hee barsti
in pardo mein poshida yaaro meri hasti hai
in pardo mein poshida yaaro meri hasti hai
is aankh me jadu hai ek aankh mein masti hai

Naturally, you want to hear the first one, a Holi song sung by Khursheed and Ishwarlal.
If you see the parallel between this tune and a latter day Amitabh Bachchan song, it is only because it is a popular folk tune.
Please enjoy: Bhigoi mori saari re…

And now for the last song today of the 1941 Jayant Desai movie Shadi starring Motilal and Khursheed with Ishwarlal and Madhuri.
This was sung by Kanti Lal.

mere pahlu me bhi
ek chhota sa dil hota tha
un dino aah na bharta tha
na main rota tha
aankh milte hi gaya
aankh milte hi gaya
dil jo paraye bas me
aankh milte hi gaya
dil jo paraye bas me
yaad baaki hai mere dil ki
meri nas nas me
yaad baaki hai mere dil ki
meri nas nas me
dil lutakar yahi shikwa hai jaba par haye
dil lutakar yahi shikwa hai jaba par haye
koi kisi se dil na lagaye
koi kisi se dil na lagaye
koi kisi se dil na lagaye
koi kisi se dil na lagaye
koi kisi se dil na lagaye
Ladies and gentlemen, DN Madhok was among the first generation of lyricists in India and hence, a very important lyricist for me to cover. I have covered more than 850 songs of his from over a hundred movies from the year 1932 to 1969 (from Radhey Shyam to Samay Bada Balwan).
Out of these over 850 songs, I selected 156 of his best songs. I shall be covering these in six parts.
I hope you liked my selection of songs for Part I.
Hasrat Jaipuri Song of the Week (HJSOW) (This post appeared on YKDN on 24 Jan 2020)
Shammi Kapoor, the Quintessential Romantic Hero
When we were boys, we were not allowed to watch Shammi Kapoor movies. He enacted his romantic roles with such intensity that we would tend to believe that Love and Romance were the two most important objectives of life. On top of that, he enacted the title roles of bad sounding names such as Bluff-Master, Budtameez, Janwar, Laat Sahib and even Pagla Kahin Ka.
His sensuous roles and songs would certainly make us feel – well – uncomfortable. I saw the 1964 movie Rajkumar and I watched him perform on Is rang badalti duniya mein with Sadhana and my first reaction as a mere ten year old was that why wasn’t such sensuousness censored! He filled each word of Hasrat Jaipuri’s song with meaning that was dying to come out and be seen.
And this was going to be the first movie in colour and how could we see Shammi Kapoor in his true colours, so as to say?
Therefore, I saw the 1961 Subodh Mukherjee movie Junglee, 55 years after it was released, on my computer. Primarily, I wanted to see him enacting the songs Chahe koi mujhe Junglee kahe and Ai ai aa suku suku. However, the song that I remembered the most after seeing the movie was this, sung by Mohammad Rafi for him.
There wasn’t any brashness in the song at all. There was only gentlemanliness and gentleness. Just like in Kashmir Ki Kali, he was heir to a rich family and expected to be a spoiled brat. As soon as Love dawned on him like a benign sun, he became as far from spoiled brat behaviour as he could get. No wonder his heroines adored him.
Mohammad Rafi Singing for Shammi Kapoor
Mohammad Rafi had a great talent in that he could sing for his heroes in the style of the hero and not in any characteristic Rafi style. Hence, when he sang for Shammi Kapoor, these songs instantly became Shammi Kapoor songs and less Rafi songs. As an example, if you listen to Kashmir Ki Kali’s Deewana hua baadal, you feel as if Shammi is actually singing.
Incidentally, some of the best songs of Rafi are picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Hasrat ji had a lot to do about them (of course there would be a rare, say, Qamar Jalalabadi number too such as Main bewafa nahin hoon tere pyar ki kasam.
Shankar Jaikishan
I thought I would steer clear from their Raaga based songs since on my blog I have quite a few of them under ‘Raaga Based Song of the Day’. Indeed, my first two posts are of both Hasrat Jaipuri and Shankar Jaikishan:#1 Tum mujhe youn bhula na paoge(Raag Jhinjhoti, Tal Kaherava) and #2 Unake khayal aaye to aate chale gaye(Gara, Kaherava).
However, it is difficult avoiding such songs. This one is in Raag Kalyan, with the commonest of Tals Kaherava. Kalyan is the basic and first raag taught to lovers of classical music.
As seen by me, the #1 song of Lata Mangeshkar happens to be in Shuddha Kalyan belonging to the Kalyan Thaat and that too was penned by Hasrat Jaipuri.
S-J’s composition here is so good that you want to enter the screen, get hold of Saira Bano and make her take Shammi Kapoor seriously!
Hasrat Jaipuri
I take it that scenario of a song with it fitting into the overall scheme of things of the director would be explained to the lyricist two to three years before the movie is shot. He has the difficult job at hand to convert the scenario into the spoken emotions of the protagonist (s), often in line with a tune that has already been given by the composer. I am sure that HJ had been explained that Shammi Kapoor belongs to a family wherein laughter is strictly prohibited. Saira Bano makes him laugh but the misunderstanding between them makes him sad. So, he comes up with the best lines of the song:
Tumne mujhako hasana sikhaya,
Rone kahoge ro lenge ab;
Aansu ka hamare gham na karo,
Ye behte hain to behne do…
Terrific indeed. Love does it to lovers frequently. In another song, a lover had this to say:
Jo tumko ho pasand wahi baat kahenge,
Tum din ko kaho raat to hum raat kahenge.
Basically, Love makes you forget your own importance and you are ready for:
(By the way, Kalyan literally means ‘good luck’ and whether he sang to her and later she sang to him, good luck ensued)
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
Dil chahta hai vo kahne do
Mujhe tumse muhabbat ho gayi hai mujhe
Palkon ki chhao mein rahne do
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
Dil chahta hai vo kahne do
Mujhe tumse muhabbat ho gayi hai mujhe
Palkon ki chhaon mein rahne do
Tumne mujhko hasna sikhaya aa oo
Tumne mujhko hasna sikhaya
Rone kahoge ro lenge ab
Rone kahoge ro lenge
Aansu ka hamare gam na karo
Vo bahate hain to bahane do
Mujhe tumse muhabbat ho gai hai mujhe
Palkon ki chhaon mein rahne do
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
Chahe bana do chahe mita do
Chahe bana do chahe mita do
Mar bhi gaye to denge duayen
Mar bhi gaye to denge duayen
Ud ud ke kahegi khaak sanam
Ye dard-e-muhabbat sahne do
Mujhe tumse muhabbat ho gayi hai mujhe
Palkon ki chhaon mein rahne do
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
Dil chahta hai vo kahne do
Mujhe tumse muhabbat ho gayi hai mujhe
Palko ki chhaon mein rahne do
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
I hoped you liked my choice of Hasrat Jaipuri Song of the Week #4.
We have a Facebook group called Yaad Kiya Dil Ne (YKDN). It is a group for songs and music. For most people on Facebook, a group is just a group of like minded people engaged in a common activity. For us, YKDN is akin to a family; everyone is emotionally involved.
This year due to continued lock-down since 25 Mar, it wasn’t possible to have our Annual Live Fest at Kandaghat. Most of us were saddened.
There is a saying that ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going’. I have often been teased and taunted because of my devotion towards my sisters in the YKDN family. No more; because, my sisters came to our rescue. My behna Manik Lakhkar Chava came up with an idea that a Fest could be held on Video Conferencing. And who was there to execute this idea? Well, my sister Suman Saxena. Even though Manik was already networking with her larger family on Zoom, Suman suggested that Zoom wasn’t a reliable application. She suggested Go To Meeting and diligently went about inviting and netting people to a Fest on Video Conferencing on Sunday, 26 Apr 20.
Whilst it was sheer hard-work for Suman, very quickly the excitement started building up. We decided on the following:
The Fest would be an occasion to pay homage to Jaswant Singh Lagwal whom we lost prematurely and tragically on 25 Mar 20. He is survived by his wife Kavita (who has often cut the YKDN cake during our meets, she being the youngest) and sons Niraj and Pankaj.
Since Jaswant was a great fan of Dharam paaji (actor Dharmendra), the songs selected for singing by us would be Dharmendra songs.
This is how we went about it preparing for the Fest:
We formed a Whats App group that we named FOG or Fest Op Group and made Suman and Manik Admins of the group in addition to me. All those participating were made as members of the group. Unlike all other groups that are formed for specific purposes but finally come down to being just social groups, it was decided and made clear that this group would be used only for operating instructions of Fests.
The programme was planned. It was decided that during the first one hour we’d stick to paying homage to Jaswant and later on we would have an off-the-cuff sing song session.
The first one hour was to have six songs including our group anthem ‘Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum’. I downloaded the Karaokes for all the songs and shared with other so that we’d be on common footing.
For the final group song ‘Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge’, I made a video with pictures of Jaswant and family and shared it on You Tube.
I also made a poem for him titled ‘Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge.
Suman, meanwhile, was busy in networking all participants on Go To Meeting. Most people were to use it for the first time. She, therefore, with great patience and thoughtfulness sorted out people’s individual and collective problems.
We even invited Jaswant’s family to join.
Finally, the day arrived. We started netting in from 3:30 PM and soon had the following: Amit Lambah, Anil Koshti, Anila Bhatia, Anindya Chatterjee, Ashwani Khanna, Ashwani Sharma, Jojy Kunchattil, Maj Vishwas Mandloi, Manik Lakhkar Chava, Milind Madhav Hastak, Mona Maharaj Singh, Nimmi Iyer, Nikkilat Bajwa, Nitin Shringarpure, Pavan Malhotra (he left half way through), RPS Josen, me, Raj Dutta (he left soon after joining), Rajendra Kumar Tandon, Rekha Mittal, SK Iyer, Sukhvinder Deol, Suman Saxena, Sumedha Nair, Sumona Jaswant Grewal, Surekha Saini, Surinder Grewal, VIS Bal, Vipan Kohli.
All the participants could make it and at one time we had 33 participation points. Since most people were with their spouses, we had a gathering of more than 40 people. Most people had earlier physically participated in one Fest or the other except for Milind Madhav Hastak, Nitin Shringarpure, Pavan Malhotra, Raj Dutta and Sumona Jaswant Grewal. Jaswant’s family couldn’t join in. However, the complete recording of the Fest was sent to it.
This is how we went about it:
I welcomed all participants and recalled milestones in the life of Jaswant Singh Lagwal ending with his sad demise on 25 Mar 20. I read out the poem especially made for the occasion: ‘Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge‘.
We had a one minute silence for him as well as for Evani Leela’s younger brother Venkat Gullapalli whom we shockingly lost just two days before the Fest, on 24 Apr 20.
We began with a round of applause for Manik and Suman who conceived the Fest and made it possible.
We sang the YKDN Anthem: Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum. In the last five years of Fests, whenever we commenced a Fest we have always sung this song put together by Hasrat Jaipuri, Shankar Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar (singing for Dev Anand) and Lata Mangeshkar (singing for Usha Kiran) for the 1953 Amiya Chakrabarty movie Patita.
We sang the song Ek haseen shaam ko (Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Madan Mohan, Mohammad Rafi) for the 1966 DD Kadhyap movie Dulahan Ek Raat Ki starring Dharmendra and Nutan.
For the next song Pal pal dil ke paas tum rehati ho, Suman had shared an audio of the song sung by Jaswant himself. Originally, it was sung by Kishore Kumar on the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan and composition of Kalyanji Anandji for the 1973 Vijay Anand movie Blackmail starring Dharmendra and Rakhee.
The next song to sing was very nostalgic for us: Gaadi bula rahi hai seeti baja rahi hai. It was sung by Kishore Kumar for the 1974 Dulal Guha movie Dost on the lyrics of Anand Bakshi and composition of Laxmikant Pyarelal. When Jaswant came to know that his favourite Dharmendra was in the train from Shimla to Kandaghat when this song was sung in the movie, he reenacted the song whilst arriving for the 2018 Kandaghat Live Fest.
The next song to sing was Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai from the 1973 A Bhim Singh movie Loafer starring Dharmendra and Mumtaz (Anand Bakshi, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Kishore Kumar). By this time we had discovered that synchronization with so many people singing simultaneously was making the song fall flat. So, we decided that we would allow individual singers to sing whilst others would mute their microphones. This song was sung by Mona with RPS Josen joining in.
The last group song from 1975 Ramesh Sippy movie Sholay starring Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bahaduri, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Asrani and Jagdeep had Jaswant’s video shared with everyone. Most had moist eyes.
After completing the planned programme as above, it was decided to give individuals a chance to sing. The following sang and sang rather well: RPS Josen, Rekha Mittal, SK Iyer, Nimmi, Mona, Jojy Kunchattil, Surinder Grewal, and Ashwani Sharma.
In the end, another round of applause was called for Manik and Suman. Mona said a few thoughtful words from all of us for Jaswant and Kavita. Everyone agreed that the Fest was a great success especially with all the restrictions during COVID 19 Lockdown.
There were, of course, a few lessons for future Fests with video conferencing:
Group songs with a number of participants is not a viable option since there are insurmountable problems of synchronization.
People need to maintain group discipline in that they should mute their microphones when not speaking.
For singing in built microphones of the computers and cellphones are not the answer; one requires good compatibility external microphones.
Those who couldn’t attend the Fest can download the complete recording of the Fest by clicking on the following link:
In addition to thanking Manik and Suman for the video conferencing idea, permit me to thank all participants for their enthusiastic and meaningful participation in this unique Fest.

Tonight we take up the tenth lyricist Indeevar. He was born in 1924 as Shyamalal Babu Rai in Dhamna Village of Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. He moved to Bombay at the end of 1940s to pursue a professional career as a lyricist.
In a career spanning nearly half a century he wrote 1633 songs for over 300 films. I could find 1589 songs from 446 movies.
Day #1, Song #1
Bade armaano se rakha hai balam teri kasam
He started writing lyrics for songs with the 1945 movie Samrat Chandragupta. It was with his 17th movie in 1951: Malhar that he finally got recognition with the song: Bade armaano se rakha hai balam teri kasam, a song picturised on Arjun Bakshi and Shammi.
Here is from The Hindu newspaper dated 29 Mar 2012 in a piece titled ‘Blast From The Past: Malhar (1951):
“Starring Shammi, Arjun, Moti Sagar, Kanhaiyalal
On watching “Malhar”, more than six decades after it was released, one cannot but admire the fundamental laws that govern good cinema, which have stood the test of time, proving that they are inviolate and sacrosanct. Despite the considerable time that has elapsed, “Malhar”, directed by Harish, shows no signs of staleness, at least in certain vital areas. The first of two films to be produced by ace singer, Mukesh (the other being “Anuraag” in 1956) under the banner of Darling Films, it had a young and largely inexperienced cast and crew, for many of whom it was their debut vehicle.
The film is a showpiece of technical brilliance, especially the editing by S. Prabhakar, which is taut and precise, and never allows the narrative to slacken or waver, even in the second half, which, on certain occasions tends to meander. Equally deft is the cinematography by M. Rajaram, considering the equipment available to him.
However, piece-de-resistance of the film is its music score, composed by Roshan, grandfather of Hrithik Roshan, who had made his debut just a year earlier, in 1950. For the current generation of viewers, who, through incessant harping might be deluded into believing that film dynasties do not extend beyond the Bachchans and the Kapoors, this will be a revelation. As will be the trivia that Mukesh was the grandfather of the talented Neil Nitin Mukesh. Or Moti Sagar, who essays an important role, is the father of singer Preeti Sagar.
Each song, led by the remarkable “Bade Armaanon Se Rakha Hai Sanam Teri Qasam, Pyaar Ki Duniya Mein Yeh Pehla Qadam” is a gem. Roshan was undoubtedly helped by the lyricists, debutant Indeevar and Kaif-Irfani- who penned sheer poetry, including “Dil Tujhe diya tha Rakhne ko, Tune Dil ko Jala ke Rakh Kiya” and “Tara Toote Duniya Dekhe”. Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh, needless to mention, made them immortal in their voice.”
Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh sing the first hit song of Indeevar in the Hindi movies, a song composed by Roshan: Bade armaano se rakha hai balam teri kasam….
ba.De armaano.n se rakhaa hai balam terii kasam

Day #1, Song #2
Do hain naina hon chaar kaise
We started with our tenth Lyricist (not in any particular order or ranking): Shyamalal Babu Rai or Indeevar with a great song of his in the 1951 movie Malhar: Bade armaano se balam teri kasam.
Now, lets go on chronologically. His first movie, as I said, was the 1945 movie Samrat Chandragupta. I couldn’t make out exactly which was his songs and which were by Pt Madhur. Hence, I am not giving you any.
His second movie was the first of the two movies in 1946: Double Face. Indeevar wrote all seven songs for the movie that were composed by Shyam Babu Pathak:
1. Abhi hai kuchh deri.
2. Dekhe bin chain nahin.
3. Dil ek hai.
4. Ek din ki suno kahani.
5. Hath mein sagar ho mere.
6. Rehte hain adhure.
7. Uthi uthi ghatayen.
We shall skip all these.
Jungle Ki Pukar was his next movie in 1946. S Banerjee and Goswami composed following songs penned by Indeevar:
1. Aisi aayi ab ke bahar.
2. Chalo piya ke des panchhi.
3. Dekho mera singar.
4. Dono rukhsar mah pare hain.
5. Gar yaar na ho.
6. Pardesi saudagar aaye.
7. Yaad tumhari aayi sajanwa.
Once again, we shall skip these.
Namak was the first of the two movies having his songs in the year 1947. Once again, Indeevar wrote all five songs for the movie that were composed by Naresh Chandra and Shyam Babu Pathak:
1. Do hain naina hon chaar kaise.
2. Kabhi jab unki yaad aati hai.
3. Aansu na tham sake to dil ko thaam lena.
4. Daal ke dera kare basera.
5. Kisi ke ho jaao.
I am going to give you the first song only to show you the development of a Lyricist in early stages.
This song was sung by Leela Mehta and Yashwant Bhatt.
Please enjoy: Do hain naina hon chaar kaise…
Day #1, Song #3
Tere naino mein nindiya
Black Market was his second and last movie in 1947. He wrote as many as eight songs for the movie that were composed by Shyma Babu Pathak:
1. Dear Dear Darling tumse mujhe love ho gaya.
2. Dekho dekho dil dil mein bas ke.
3. Ho ye ye ho ho ek chai.
4. Kano ke jhumke kehte hain.
5. Mausam ki chhatta manohar ho.
6. Naina geele mat kar pi le.
7. Peene walo aaj jannat ban ke rehti.
8. Saal mein din wo ho
We shall skip all these songs.
Satyanarayan was his first movie in the year 1948. Hansraj Behl was the composer of eight songs, out of which only one was written by him: Dil waale sahib ghazab kar daala.
With this, on the very first day we have covered 39 of his songs in seven movies. Out of these I gave you the 1951 movie Malhar song out of turn: Bade armaano se balam teri kasam.
His next movie in 1948 was Didi in which Mukund Masurekar composed eleven songs; eight of these were penned by Indeevar:
1. Pyari raat pyari raat aaj aayi hai suhag ki raat.
2. Tere naino mein nindiya.
3. Balam mere haaye.
4. Chupke chupke aana mere raja.
5. Mere dil ki duniya se.
6. Bhool jao mere meet.
7. Kal aayenge.
8. Main hoon naar naveli.
The first one is a fine song sung by Amirbai Karnataki (the one who sang Vaishnav janto tene kahiye that was immensely liked by Mahatama Gandhi) and Shankar Dasgupta. However, I searched on the net and couldn’t even get it in MP3.
Hence, please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar singing: Tere naino mein nindiya…
tere naino me nindiya tere naino me nindiya
nindiya me sapne sapne me sajan
dol rahe re dol rahe re tere naino me nindiya
dol rahe re dol rahe re dol rahe re dol rahe re
sapne me sajan dol rahe re tere naino me nindiya
jadu ke teer chale kaleja chir chale
dono hi dilo ko ab tatol rahe re
tere naino me nindiya
gore gal muskurake lal ho rahe
ho gore gal
gore gal muskurake lal ho rahe
mithe mithe man me khyal aa rahe
bezuban labj bhi kuch bol rahe re
tere naino me nindiya
chhedo nahi aasha ko chhedo nahi aasha ko
jud gaye do sans mile honge do
tum abhi se man me ras ghol rahe re
tere naino me nindiya tere naino me nindiya
Day #2, Song #4
Ab to nazar ka naata tujhse hi jod baithe
We started with our tenth Lyricist (not in any particular rank or order) Indeevar day before yesterday. On that day we covered 8 of his movies with 41 songs and I gave you, as everyday, three of them.
His first movie in 1949 was Jagriti. Nine of his songs were composed by K Narayana Rao, the producer:
1. Ab to nazar ka naata tujhse hi jod baithe.
2. Aaye aur jaadu daal chale.
3. Nayi nayi pehchan re.
4. Azadi mili desh ko dukhiya ko kya mila?
5. Din ko hansna raat ko rona.
6. Dushaman hai ye dil hi hamara.
7. Ek jyoti bhuji.
8. Jawani ke path mein ye pehla kadam.
9. Kasam hai tumhen.
All but two songs were sung by Yashwant Bhatt, Lalita Rao and Freni Shroff. Two solos were sung by Omkar Devaskar and Sanjeevani Pai.
The first one has been sung by Omkar Devaskar in the likeness of KL Saigal, the prevalent style at that time. The lyrics are very good.
Please enjoy: Ab to nazar ka naata tujhse hi jod baithe…
ab to nazar ka nata ab to nazar ka nata
tojhse hi jod baithe tojhse hi jod baithe
ab to nazar ka nata ab to nazar ka nata
tojhse hi jod baithe tojhse hi jod baithe
aashik teri gali ke duniya ko chhod baithe
aashik teri gali ke duniya ko chhod baithe
ab to nazar ka nata ab to nazar ka nata
tojhse hi jod baithe tojhse hi jod baithe
ab rahe mohabbat me ab rahe mohabbat me
manzil hai makan tera manzil hai makan tera
duniya ke rashto se rishta hi tod baithe
ab to nazar ka nata ab to nazar ka nata
tojhse hi jod baithe tojhse hi jod baithe
naam aapka le le kar badnaam ho chuke hum
naam aapka le le kar badnaam ho chuke hum
haa haa naam ek aap hai jo hamse
muh apna mod baithe ek aap hai jo hamse
muh apna mod baithe ab to nazar ka nata
ab to nazar ka nata tojhse hi jod baithe
tojhse hi jod baithe
Day #2, Song #5
Mohabbat hote hote ho gayi
His second and last movie in 1949 was Imtihan, a Mohan Sinha movie starring Surendra Nath and Madhubala. Shyambabu Pathak composed ten songs in the movie, most of which were penned by Harikrishna Premi. Only one was written by Indeevar and sung by Geeta Dutt (she sang most of the songs): Dekho dil de ke tamasha dekho.
Aflatoon was the first of his five movies in 1950.Neenu Majumdar composed seven of his songs that were written by him and Buniyaad:
1. Bach bach ke chalungi chhip chhip ke milungi.
2. Chhipo hamse na O meri Laila.
3. Kehna na maana kisi ka tumne.
4. Mera dil tere bas mein.
5. Pyar bhari raat sajan yaad tumhen hai ke nahin.
6. Sun meri baat sun is mein paap hai na punya.
7. Teri yaad ab dil dukhati rahegi.
Achha Jee was his second movie in 1950. He was back with Shyam Babu Pathak and they made the following songs:
1. Apna bana ke rahungi.
2. Apne dilon mein hai ujiyala.
3. Bahut akad ke chalte the wo chhaila ji.
4. Bhar jaaye aasman to aahon ki kya khata.
5. Bhool hai kisi ko apnana.
6. Do din ki bahar pyar mein guzaar do.
7. Kisi ke bholepan ne mere man ko kheencha.
8. Takrar ko badal do pyar mein.
All very good songs as you can make out from the titles. However, we shall skip all these.
In his next movie in 1950 Hanste Rehana, starring Mukri and Heera Sawant, there were six songs composed by Wadhwa: two written by Farooq Qaiser and four by Indeevar:
1. Hai kitna suhana.
2. Matwali ghatao zara tum jhoom ke aana.
3. Ek woh hain humko bhool chale.
4. Ho pam pam.
Rupaiya was his fourth and last movie in 1950 and 14th movie since his entry into Hindi films with the 1945 movie Samrat Chandragupta.
P Ramakant composed nine of his songs:
1. Tiki hui thi jin par nazaren.
2. Mohabbat dard hai.
3. Hamen apna bana lo ji.
4. Insaan banane wale ne kya cheez banayi hai.
5. Jise main pyar karun.
6. Log kehte hain mohabbat mein asar hota hai.
7. Main naari hoon.
8. Na jaane mujhe kya ho gaya.
9. Tu mera Mohan main teri Radha.
We shall skip all these. Once again, you are aware as to how difficult it is to make a break as a lyricist in Hindi movies. I have gone through 38 songs of his six movies and given you only one. I have already told you that his first hit song was in the seventh year of his career after 17 movies and we started with the Malhar song: Bade armaan se rakha hai balam teri kasam pyar ki duniya mein ye pehla kadam.
Aahuti was his last movie in 1950 and the 15th movie of his career in six years.
The film starred Ranjit and Mumtaz.
DC Dutt composed 13 songs in the movie; eight by Tandon and five by Indeevar:
1. Agar Bhagwan tum hamko kahin.
2. Same song (Version 2).
3. Chaar dino ki athkheliyan.
4. Mar ke jeena hamen bhi.
5. Neha laga ke nibhayiyo.
And that brings us to the year 1951 with whose movie song we started with Indeevar yesterday.
His first movie in 1951 was Raajput. Hansraj Behl composed 12 songs in the movie and one was by Husnlal Bhagatram. Indeevar wrote just one: Ye ghadi tera dil dole kabhi haan bol.
His next movie in 1951 was Phoolon Ka Haar whose eleven songs were composed by Hansraj Behl. Indeevar wrote three:
1. Mohabbat hote hote ho gayi.
2. Lapak jhapak aaye mithi mithi nindiya.
3. Jinke sang preet hai unki hai diwali.
The first one was sung by Mubarak Begum and Devendra Mohan and was written in the humorous style that was perfected by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.
Please enjoy: Mohabbat hote hote ho gayi…
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
chale the chhedne ko hum
jo aaya samne jis dum
mili kuch aisi nigahe
jaise milti hai daurahe
na jane kya bikhar gaya
mera man tan se chhut gaya, kab
main kisi ki aankh me aakash me
aakash me jab kho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
kisi ne kaha dil lelo
khilauna samajh ke khelo
samajh me meri na aaya
mujhe ye sauda na bhaya
liye dil chal diye jab wo
to kuch aisa laga mujhko, kya
jaise koi chiz mere hatho me
aate aate kho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
wahi jab sapno me aaya
mujhe sote se jagaya
kaha usne mujhe rani
bani phir aage kahani
kalayi hatho me dedi
nishani usne mujhe dedi, phir
iske baad yaad nahi aankh lagi
aankh lagi so gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
khuli jab aankh to dekha
nazara aur hi kuch tha
koi wo chhubuli chhori
gayi dil le jora jori
jigar me raah banake
najar ke teer chalake, phir
man ki kyari me meri preet bij
preet bij bo gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
mohabbat hote hote hote hote
hote hote ho gayi
Day #2, Song #6
Ek baar agar tu keh de
And that brings us to the 17th movie of Indeevar’s career: Malhar. I gave you an excerpt from The Hindu of 29 Mar 2012 to tell you about how Indeevar really arrived with this movie.
The movie starred Shammi and Arjun Bakshi. There were nine songs in the movie that were composed by Roshan. Indeevar wrote four of them:
1. Bade armaano se rakha hai balam teri kasam.
2. Ek baar agar tu keh de.
3. Taara toote duniya dekhe dekha na kisi ne dil toot gaya.
4. Hota raha younhi agar anjaam wafa ka.
In addition to Bade armaano se rakha hai balam that I have given you yesterday as the starting song, I am tempted to give you a duet between Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh.
Please enjoy: Ek baar agar tu keh de…
ek bar agar tu kahe de
ek bar agar tu kahe de, tu hai meri ke me hu tera
ham do albele panchhi
ham do albele panchhi, ham dono ka ek basera
do dil dhadke hai, chounk uthi hai jawaniya
kuchh kaha hai nigaho ne, chhed ke pyar ki kahaniya
kuchh kaha hai nigaho ne, chhed ke pyar ki kahaniya
mera dil hi nahi hai mere bas me
mera dil hi nahi hai mere bas me
yeh kis ne jadu phera, kaho ji yeh kis ne jadu phera
ham dono ka ek basera
aa jaye na kahi ham-tum kisi ki nigaho me
sang sang hi chale ham jindagi ki raaho me
sang sang hi chale ham jindagi ki raaho me
tujhe chhin na le koi mujhse
tujhe chhin na le koi mujhse
yeh jag hai bada lutera, suno ji yeh jag hai bada lutera
ham dono ka ek basera
dekho aai hai sitaro ki timtimati yeh toliya
chalo inn ki chhao me ham khele aankh micholiya
chalo inn ki chhao me ham khele aankh micholiya
tute na kabhi jivan bhar
tute na kabhi jivan bhar
yeh bandhan tera mera, oho ji yeh bandhan tera mera
ham dono ka ek basera
ek bar agar tu kahe de
ek bar agar tu kahe de, tu hai meri ke me hu tera
Day #3, Song #7
Aankhon se mili aankhen iqraar ho gaya
Third day of our being with our tenth great lyricist: Shyamalal Babu Rai or Indeevar. I haven’t ranked any lyricist and I am not going to do it.
So far, starting from his first movie in 1945: Samrat Chandragupta, we have covered 17 movies having 88 songs; out of which I gave you just six.
His fourth movie in 1951 was Andolan. It was a Phani Mazumdar movie. Who was Phani Mazumdar? Some of you know him as the man who wrote the story Mare Gaye Gulfaam, based on which Shailendra produced his only movie: Teesri Kasam that he had Abhi Bhattacharya direct it.
Andolan had five songs that were composed by Pannalal Ghosh; one of these was penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and of course all of you know that song: Vande Matram that was sung by Sudha Malhotra, Parul Ghosh and Manna Dey.
Simba was his next movie in 1951. It was a Mohammad Hussain movie starring Babu Rao and Krishan Kumari. DC Dutt composed six songs for the movie; four were penned by Farooq Qaiser and two by Indeevar:
1. Aankhon se mili aankhen iqraar ho gaya.
2. Sunsan jungle manaye ja.
Both the songs of Indeevar were sung by Sulochana Kadam. What do you know about her? You must listen to her song Wo aaye hain dil ko karaar aa gaya that was written by Farooq Qaiser and composed by Krishna Dayal for the 1953 movie Malika Salomi. In Nainital it was sung at the same spot where a number of songs have been sung; eg Zara sun haseena e nazneen in Raag Pahadi and the Gumrah song Tujhako mera pyar pukare.
Just to give you one song I go through all this! Do you think it is worth it?
Anyway please enjoy Sulochana Kadam singing: Aankhon se mili aankhen iqraar ho gaya…
aankho se mili aankhe ikraar ho gaya
pahchaan hote hote yun pyaar ho gaya
aankho se mili aankhe ikraar ho gaya
pahchaan hote hote yun pyaar ho gaya
armaan hai ye dil ka tu saamne rahe
tu saamne rahe
armaan hai ye dil ka tu saamne rahe
tu saamne rahe
tere bagair jeena dushwaar ho gaya
tere bagair jeena dushwaar ho gaya
aankho se mili aankhe ikraar ho gaya
pahchaan hote hote yun pyaar ho gaya
laali ki kya jarurat kaajal ki kya padi
laali ki kya jarurat kaajal ki kya padi
kaajal ki kya padi
jab pyaar hi jiwan ka singaar ho gaya
jab pyaar hi jiwan ka singaar ho gaya
aankho se mili aankhe ikraar ho gaya
pahchaan hote hote yun pyaar ho gaya
dil me sama gaye ho dhadkan me bas gaye
dhadkan me bas gaye
dil me sama gaye ho dhadkan me bas gaye
dhadkan me bas gaye
jab aankh band kar li didaar ho gaya
jab aankh band kar li didaar ho gaya
aankho se mili aankhe ikraar ho gaya
pahchaan hote hote yun pyaar ho gaya
Day #3, Song #8
Dukhiyare naina dhoonde piya ko
Vanraj was his first movie in 1952. This was another movie in which the songs were composed by Shyam Babu Pathak. Indeevar wrote three out of the six:
1. Main ghumne ki shaukee.
2. Mujhe chume chand ki kirane.
3. Sir pe khada hai kaal.
Nirmohee was his second movie in 1952.
This was the first movie in which Madan Mohan composed two of his songs. Almost all the eight songs of the movie were sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Here are the two by Indeevar:
1. Dukhiyare naina dhoonde piya ko.
2. Ye suhana sama ye umange jawan.
Lets listen to Lata Mangeshkar singing the first song.
Please enjoy: Dukhiyare naina dhoonde piya ko…
dukhiyare naina dhundhe piya ko
nis din kare pukar
dukhiyare naina dhundhe piya ko
nis din kare pukar
dukhiyare naina
phir kya aayengi wo raate
phir kya aayengi wo raate
laut gayi hai jo barate
laut gayi hai jo barate
beete din aur bichhaa saathi
beete din aur bichhaa saathi
bahati nadi ki dhar
dukhiyare naina
dukhiyare naina dhundhe piya ko
nis din kare pukar
dukhiyare naina
raah me naina deeya jalaye
raah me naina deeya jalaye
aap jale aur jiya jalaye
aap jale aur jiya jalaye
jis se jivan bhi jal jaye
jis se jivan bhi jal jaye
wo kaisi jaldhaar
dukhiyare naina
dukhiyare naina dhundhe piya ko
nis din kare pukar
dukhiyare naina
Day #3, Song #9
Satayega kise tu aasmaan
Hamari Duniya was his third movie in 1953 after Vanraj and Nirmohee.
Seven songs of the movie were composed by Shyam Babu Pathak; four by Indeevar and three by Hasrat Jaipuri.
Indeevar’s songs were:
1. Zindagi usi ki hai jo zindagi se khele.
2. Same song Version 2.
3. Chanda ki Chandni.
We shall skip all three.
His first movie in 1953 was Sheesham; a Kishore Sharma movie starring Nasir Khan and Nutan.
After the 1951 movie Malhar in which Indeevar had his first hit song: Bade armaano se rakha hai balam teri kasam, this was the second movie in which he paired with Roshan.Out of the ten songs of the movie, Indeevar wrote five of them:
1. Satayega kise tu aasmaan.
2. Sapno mein aana chhed chhed jaana.
3. Jab tak sansaar rahe.
4. Muskuraahat tere honthon ki mera singar hai.
5. Machla hua hai dil nigaahen beqraar hain.
All very good songs. We shall take up the first one sung by Mukesh.
Please enjoy: Satayega kise tu aasmaan…
sataayegaa kise tu aasamaan jab ham nahi hoge
diye hai tune aise gam kabhi jo kam nahi hoge
sitaare tutane se aasamaan kaa kyaa bigadataa hai
aasamaan kaa kyaa bigadataa hai
sitaare tutane se aasamaan kaa kyaa bigadataa hai
aasamaan kaa kyaa bigadataa hai
kami kyaa hogi duniyaa me agar ik ham nahi hoge
sataayegaa kise tu aasamaan jab ham nahi hoge
diye hai tune aise gam kabhi jo kam nahi hoge
hai jab tak ham tabhi tak dushmani hai ham se duniyaa ko
dushmani hai ham se duniyaa ko
hai jab tak ham tabhi tak dushmani hai ham se duniyaa ko
dushmani hai ham se duniyaa ko
yahi duniyaa hame dhundhegi ham jis dam nahi hoge
sataayegaa kise tu aasamaan jab ham nahi hoge
Day #4, Song #10
Tere haathon mein
Indeevar was the fourth most prolific lyricist in Hindi movies after Sameer, Anand Bakshi and Majrooh Sultanpuri. He wrote nearly 1650 songs. In the first three days with him, starting from the 1945 movie Samrat Chandragupta and ending with 1953 movie Sheesham or Shisham, we covered 24 of his movies with 105 songs; out of which I gave you just nine.
His second movie in 1953 was Dara. Mohammad Shafi composed seven songs. Indeevar wrote one of them: Bandhan hain haathon ke kangan that was sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
His next movie in 1953 was Dana Pani, a VM Vyas movie that repeated the successful cast of 1952 Vijay Bhatt movie Baiju Bawra: Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari.
Mohan Junior composed eight songs for the movie; Kaif Irfani wrote five and Indeevar wrote the following three:
1. Tere haathon mein.
2. Chanda suraj naina tere.
3. Meri kutiya ke deep tere hi.
The first one was a duet between Geeta Dutt and Mohammad Rafi and it is worth listening to it. She starts only with the second stanza. Please forgive me for the audio quality. Yet it is an immortal song.
Please enjoy: Tere haathon mein…
jiwan kya hai dhalta suraj pal pal dhalta jaye
is nagri se jane wale lot ke phir na aye
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
tu soch ke dunia pe jara dil ko lutana
tu soch ke dunia pe jara dil ko lutana
usse bhi tere talu karar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
juari ki mahfil se ayi sada ayi sada
juari ki mahfil se ayi sada ayi sada
jiwan hai ek jua khel tu hasta hua khel tu
tujhe dega wahi jisne sabko diya
eye khiladi tu kyu itna bekarar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
gujare na gujre ye jiwan hai kaisa jiwan hai kaisa
jidhar aj dekho kare raz kaisa kare raz kaisa
kahi hai amiri kahi hal aisa
kahi hai amiri kahi hal aisa
ke dunia me jina bhi dushwar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai
tere hatho me jiwan ki jeet haar hai

His next movie in 1953 was Gharbaar. Vasant Prabhu composed nine songs in the movie and Indeevar penned all of them except one each by Kaif Irfani and DN Madhok:
1. Chhup chhup ke aaya koi.
2. Maa ki mamta pyar pita ka.
3. Udhar hai husn ka jalwa.

1. Kisi ki aankh ke aansu hain.
2. Tu hai chanda to main hoon chakor.
The first one was sung beautifully by Lata Mangeshkar.
Please enjoy: Kisi ki aankh ke aansu hain…
kisi ki aankh ke aansu hai, sitaare na kaho
najar ka dhoka hai tum, inako najaare na kaho
yeh murawwat hain jo milate hain, muhabbat toh nahi
woh kisi aur ke hain, unako hamaare na kaho
nazar ka dhoka hai tum, inako nazaare na kaho
lagi jo thik hi maujon ki khel mein tut pade
ghani ghani se ye tufan hai, kinaare na kaho
najar ka dhoka hai tum, inako najaare na kaho
Day #4, Song #12
Kaise koi jiye zehar hai zindagi
His first movie in 1954 was Vijay Garh. Mazzafar Shahjahanpuri wrote most of the songs that were composed by AK Prem (5) and Krishan Dayal (2). Indeevar wrote only one: Ruki ruki saanse jhuki jhuki akhiyan that was composed by Krishan Dayal.
Baadbaan was his next movie in 1954; a movie directed once again by Phani Mazumdar (a novelist of Maare Gaye Gulfaam fame that was made into Teesri Kasam by Shailendra). This one starred Dev Anand, Usha Kiran, Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari.
SK Pal and Timir Baran composed eight very beautiful songs; six of them written by Indeevar and two by Uddav Kumar:
1. Kaise koi jiye zehar hai zindagi (Geeta Dutt)
2. Har roz kaha har roz suna.
3. Aaya toofan, kaise koi jiye zehar hai zindagi (Hemant Kumar).
4. Dekho chanchal hai mera jiya ho.
5. Thukra ke teri duniya ko.
6. Tori preet ke bas ho.
We shall be taking up two; one today and one tomorrow.
The first one is a masterpiece by Indeevar and is one of the best of Geeta Dutt.
Please enjoy: Kaise koi jiye zehar hai zindagi…
kaise koi jiye
kaise koi jiye zahar hai zindagi
utha tufan wo, utha tufan naach ke
sab bujh gaye diye, kaise koi jiye
baadal hai ya dhuwa aag lagi kaha
jalta na ho kahi mera hi aashiya
angare the aansu nahi wo, dil ne jo piye
kaise koi jiye zahar hai jindagi
utha tufan wo, utha tufan nach ke
sab bujh gaye diye, kaise koi jiye
taare na jane unchayi gagan ki
aankhe na samajhe
gehrayi man ki, gehrayi man ki
tare na jane pyase papihe ne aas thi bandhi
ud gaye baadal aa gayi aandhi
gam ne jo chheda dil ne hasi se honth si liye
kaise koi jiye zahar hai zindagi
utha tufan wo, utha tufan naach ke
sab bujh gaye diye, kaise koi jiye
Day #5, Song #13
Aaya toofan, kaise koi jiye zahr hai zindagi
Yesterday was the fourth day with Great Lyricist #10: Indeevar (not in any particular order or ranking). We had gone through 125 of his songs from 30 movies, out of which I had given you just 12.
The last song that I gave you was a Geeta Dutt song for the 1954 movie Baadbaan: Kaise koi jiye zehr hai zindagi; a masterpiece by Indeevar.
I had promised you the Hemant Kumar version too. So here it is.
Please enjoy: Aaya toofan, kaise koi jiye zahr hai zindagi…
aaya tufan aaya tufan
bekadar bewafa hai aasma
kaise koi jiye
kaise koi jiye zahar hai zindagi
utha tufan wo, utha tufan naach le
sab bujh gaye diye kaise koi jiye
baadal hai ya dhuwa aag lagi kaha
jalta na ho kahi mera hi aashiya
angare the aansu nahi wo, dil ne jo piye
kaise koi jiye zahar hai jindagi
utha tufan wo, utha tufan naach ke
sab bujh gaye diye, kaise koi jiye
taare na jane unchayi gagan ki
aankhe na samajhe
gehrayi man ki, gehrayi man ki
tare na jane pyase papihe ne aas thi bandhi
ud gaye baadal aa gayi aandhi
gam ne jo chheda dil ne hasi se honth si liye
Day #5, Song #14
Ai meri mehboob maang le jo tujhko
I am sure that in the last two songs that I gave you from the 1954 movie Baadbaan: Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar versions of the song Kaise koi jiye zehr hai zindagi, you would have already placed Indeevar in a different league altogether.
There is much more to come.
His next movie in 1954 was Mehbooba, a K Amarnath movie starring Shammi Kapoor and Nalini Jaywant.
The movie had nine songs; five composed by OP Nayyar and four by Roshan. Six were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri, two by Tanvir Naqvi and Indeevar wrote just one: Jo dil ke malik hain mehman banke aane wale hain.
His next movie in 1954 was Dakoo Ki Ladki with Geeta Bali in the title role. For the first time, Indeevar paired with Hemant Kumar but wrote just one song whereas SH Bihari and Kaif Irfani wrote four and three respectively: Gulon ko khilau baharon se khelo.
His second last movie in 1954 was Pensioner and he wrote just one song for Hamsraj Behl: Nacho ri gudiya ri baaje shehnayiyan.
His last movie in 1954 was – hold your breath – Fuji Lama. He wrote seven songs for J Majumdar:
1. Are dil-e-nadaan jaane kya tera anjam hai.
2. Chum chuma mor naache.
3. Dil mera kho gaya hai yahin kahin.
4. Hamne tumse pyar kiya hai pyar.
5. Huye nain hamare bawariya.
6. Teri yaad ka dil ki khile.
7. Yangasi kinare mile chand se taare mile.
That finishes ten years of Indeevar’s career.
His first movie in 1955 was Shikar.
Ten songs were composed by Bulo C Rani and Indeevar wrote four of them:
1. Rangon ke badalne se tasveer.
2. Bahar dekh ke dil aur beqraar hua.
3. Aanchal mein deepak na chhupa tu.
4. Aata hai karar beqraar hone mein.
His first movie in 1956 was Gul-e-Bakawali. If you think the name is unique you have another guess coming because movies with this title were made five times including one in Punjabi.
Gyan Dutt composed eight songs in the movie and Hemant Kumar composed one that was penned by Ravi; a beautiful number: Ye shokh sitaare karte hain ishaare. Hemant Kumar and Ravi went back to their association as Music Director and his assistant in Nagin.
Indeevar’s song was just one and composed by Gyan Dutt: Mera kahan hai man meraa.
In between, please forgive me for having forgotten some of his 1955 movies. After Shikar, the next one was Mano Na Mano. He wrote seven songs for Hansraj Behl and one was penned by Kaifi Azmi:
1. Ai meri mehboob maang le jo tujhko.
2. Hai zindagi ko tera intezaar.
3. Chand mein dekhun apna mukhda.
4. Raat hai kuchh aisi baat hai.
5. Andhiyara andhiyara.
6. Raat se kali kismat.
7. Tumko hi dhoondte rahe.
The first is a duet sung by Madhubala Zaveri and Mohammad Rafi.
Please enjoy: Ai meri mehboob maang le jo tujhko…
ae meri mehbub mang le
jo tujhko manjur
gagan ki sundar chand ka jhumar
subha ke suraj ka sindur
gagan ki sundar chand ka jhumar
subha ke suraj ka sindur
mujhko tera pyar chahiye
sunhari sham se rang udakar rang udakar
badal ke badal ke badal ke mai pankh lagakar
doli sazakar tujhe bithakar le jau duniya se dur
ae meri mehbub ae meri mehbub mang le
jo tujhko manjur
gagan ki sundar chand ka jhumar
subha ke suraj ka sindur
mujhko tera pyar chahiye
mujhko tera pyar chahiye aur na kuch manjur
aakar sajan tham le daman
chhod de duniya ke dastur
aakar sajan tham le daman
chhod de duniya ke dastur
jo tujhko manjur mang le mang le
duniya se dar kar kyu bhagun
dar kar kyu bhagun
tu jo mile kuch aur na mangu aur na mangu
sathi mere pyar me tere
dhul bhi mujhko hai sindur
mujhko tera pyar chahiye
aur na kuch manjur
aakar sajan tham le daman
chhod de duniya ke dastur
jo tujhko manjur mang le mang le
mujhko tera pyar chahiye
Day #5, Song #15
Falaq milega tujhe kya hamen mitane se
Just imagine that on the fifth day, we are into the 12th year of Indeevar’s career with the 1956 movie Gul-e-Bakalavi. Before that since I forgot a few of his movies of the year 1955 I did that too except the movie just before Shikar: Ghar Ghar Men Diwali.
Most songs were penned by Prem Dhawan and composed by Roshan except one penned by Indeevar and I feel that was the best song of the movie: Falaq milega tujhe kya hamen mitane se. It was a duet between Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.
falaq milegaa tujhe kyaa hame mitaane se
ye mohabbat naa mitegi kabhi zamaane se
alaq milegaa tujhe kyaa hame mitaane se
ye mohabbat naa mitegi kabhi zamaane se
uthaa ke ranj ye dil chur ho gayaa itnaa
uthaa ke ranj ye dil chur ho gayaa itnaa
ke thes lagati hai haay
ke thes lagati hai kaliyo ke muskuraane se
ye mohabbat naa mitegi kabhi zamaane se
jiye to kiske liye tum hi jab nahi apne
tum hi jab nahi apne
jiye to kiske liye tum hi jab nahi apne
tum hi jab nahi apne
ke ji rahe the haay
ke ji rahe the abhi tak isi bahaane se
ye mohabbat naa mitegi kabhi zamaane se
jahaan ne kah diya baadal hai aasmano ke
dhuan uthaa hai ye haay
jahaan ne kah diya baadal hai aasmano ke
dhuan uthaa hai ye haay
dhuan uthaa hai ye mere hi aashiyane se
ye mohabbat naa mitegi kabhi zamaane se
falaq milegaa tujhe kyaa
Day #6, Song #16
Chand raat hai tu bhi saath hai
Today is the sixth day with our tenth lyricist Indeevar. In the last five days I gave you 15 songs selected from 148 songs of his in 38 movies.
We are now in the 12th year of his career.
His second movie in 1956 after Gul-e-Bakawali was Kismat. It was a Nanabahai Bhatt movie starring Ranjan Peace Kanwal and Nishi.
For the first time in his career he paired with Chitragupt and they made the following eight songs:
1. Chand raat hai tu bhi saath hai.
2. Teri unchi unchi unchi unchi hai dukan.
3. Dil mein kisi ki chah kiye ja.
4. Dil tumko diya sarkar amaanat rakh lo ji.
5. Haseen raat sitaron se hua karti hai.
6. Ek jadugar woh hai.
7. Keh le dil ki baat warna raat chali jayegi.
8. Ye sama ye chandni teri thi kabhi.
All very romantic songs to do with Chandni and Raat.
The first one is an adorable duet between Mohammad rafi and Asha Bhosle.
Please enjoy: Chand raat hai tu bhi saath hai…
chand rat hai tu bhi sath hai
kahde aye sanam dil me kya bat hai
chand rat hai
sunte rahe hum yuhi tum kaho
aankho ke tum samne hi raho
tumko dekh kar kab ghadi nazar
hamko kya khabar tum me kya bat hai
chand rat hai
betabiya phir badhate ho kyu
tum is tarah muskurate ho kyu
teer chal gaye dil machal gaye
jeet husn ki ishk ki maat hai
chand rat hai
rangin nazare ishare jawa
aankho me ek pyar ki dasta
mujhko mil gayi zindagi nayi
mere hath me aaj tera hath hai
chand rat hai tu bhi sath hai
kahde aye sanam dil me kya bat hai
chand rat hai
Day #6, Song #17
Dil se hain shehzade ham
Gulam Begum Badshah was his next film in 1956.
There were six songs in the movie that were composed by Sudipt. Two of these were penned by Indeevar:
1. Dil hai ye tera dil liye ja.
2. Dil se mere dil mila.
We shall skip these.
His next movie in 1956 was Taj Aur Talwar in which, once again, Sudipt composed ten songs. Indeevar, once gain, wrote two of them:
1. Aha daanv pe laga ke dil jeet le.
2. Chham chamama chamama chham.
Lalten was his second last movie in 1956. Hemant Kumar composed eight songs for the movie; three of these were written by Indeevar:
1. Dil se hain shehzaade ham.
2. Dil ka tattu ad jaata hai.
3. Lo aaya jani lalten.
Humour and comedy were very much in demand at that time. You would recall how Raja Mehdi Ali Khan delved in these despite sadness of his own. Indeevar did exactly the same here.
Please enjoy Hemant Kumar singing on his own composition: Dil se hain shehzade ham…
dil se hai shahzade hum
hai surat bhale mawali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai
par photo gita bali ki
dil se hai shahzade hum
hai surat bhale mawali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai
par photo gita bali ki
nahi pakane wali ghar me rah jata dil machal machal
apne dam par hi to pyare shahar ke chalte hai hotel
khali pocket rakhte hai par photo gita bali ki
dil se hai shahzade hum hai surat bhale mawali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai par photo gita bali ki
sapno ka ek mahal hai apna
mahal me dil ki rani hai
waise to ye basti gandi
gali bahut purani hai
dada giri bhale kahe koi
humne to rakhwali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai
par photo gita bali ki
dil se hai shahzade hum hai surat bhale mawali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai par photo gita bali ki
humne koi humdard na paya
aur na kisi ka pyar mila
bhatak gaye ham raaho se
jab khula naa koi dawar mila
aankh khuli to pata chala
ye dagar to hai kutwali ki
arey aankh khuli to pata chala
ye dagar to hai kutwali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai
par photo gita bali ki
dil se hai shahzade hum hai surat bhale mawali ki
khali pocket rakhte hai par photo gita bali ki
Day #6, Song #18
Teri chamakti aankhon ke aage ye sitare kuchh bhi nahin
In the year 1956, his last movie was Anuraag. This movie is a very unique movie in that it had ten songs and all ten were composed by Mukesh who was also the hero of the movie with Usha Kiran.
Kaif Irfani and Indeevar wrote five each but the credit for the most memorable song of the movie goes not to Indeevar but to Kaif Irfani: Koi dil mein hai aur koi hai nazar mein…kise yaad rakhun kise bhool jaayun.
Indeevar wrote the following:
1. Aaj hum tumhen sunane wale hain.
2. Tere bina suna suna laage is duniya ka mela.
3. Ho saka do dilon ka na mel re.
4. Man chal man chanchal ho jayega.
5. Ye kaisi uljhane hain.
His first movie in 1957 was Naag Lok.Ramlal Heerapanna composed ten songs for the movie; one of these was penned by Indeevar: Hambala Gambala.
We shall skip this too.
His second movie in 1957, the 13th year of his career was Chhote Babu. Shekhar and Nimmi starred in the movie directed by Harsukh Bhatt.
He paired with Madan Mohan and straightway produced magic even though he wrote just two of the seven songs:
1. Teri chamakti aankhon ke aage ye sitare kuchh bhi nahin.
2. Aane wale kal ki tum tasveer ho.
Please enjoy Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar singing: Teri chamakti aankhon ke aage ye sitare kuchh bhi nahin…
teri chamakti aankho ke aage ye sitare kuch bhi nahi
tu jo badha de hath zara, dunia ke sahare kuch bhi nahi
teri chamakti aankho ke aage ye sitare kuch bhi nahi
man liya dilkash hai bahut, ye rat hasi ye chand java
man liya dilkash hai bahut, ye rat hasi ye chand java
baat jo dekhi hai tujh me, nazaro me vo baat kaha
samne mere tu ho agar, duniya ke nazare kuchh bhi nahi
teri chamakti aankho ke aage ye sitare kuch bhi nahi
sath hai mere tu jab tak, roshan hai jivan ki rahe
sath hai mere tu jab tak, roshan hai jivan ki rahe
kyu ho mujhe manzil ka gam, patvar hai jab teri bahe
manjhi hai gar tu naiya ka, tufan ke dhare kuch bhi nahi
teri chamakti aankho ke aage ye sitare kuch bhi nahi
bandh liya bandhan me tumhe, bas me kar liya baharo ko
hai ye vo bandhan jo kar de azad gamo ke maro ko
pyar ki tere chav mile to gam ke sharare kuch bhi nahi
teri chamakti aankho ke aage ye sitare kuch bhi nahi
Day #7, Song #19
Kal raat piya ne baat kahi kuchh aisi
On the sixth day we finished taking up 171 of his songs from 45 movies in 13 years of his career. Out of these, I gave you just 18 songs.
His next movie in 1957 was Zamana. There were seven songs in the movie; two composed by Anil Biswas and five by Salil Chowdhary. Indeevar had two songs; one each by the two composers:
1. naiyya ka meri tu hi khewaiyya.
2. Chale bajate seeti jeevan ki raahon mein.
His next movie in 1957 was Jeewan Saathi. He wrote three songs for Bulo C Rani:
1. Hoke bada mera laal.
2. Bahar leke aayi karaar leke aayi.
3. Ai uljhi raahon ke rahi.
His next movie was Abhimaan, a Mahesh Kaul movie starring Shekhar and Ameeta.
He wrote four songs for Anil Biswas:
1. Ghar ki rani hoon.
2. Akdo na humse piya.
3. Kal raat piya ne baat kahi kuchh aisi.
4. Sambhalo palla dori palla.
Songs #1 and #3 were sung by Geeta Dutt, #2 by Asha Bhosle and #4 as a duet between Anil Biswas himself and Asha Bhosle.
No guessing as to which one we are going to take.
The third one is a memorable number sung beautifully by Geeta Dutt.
Please enjoy: Kal raat piya ne baat kahi kuchh aisi…
kal rat piya ne bat kahi kuch aisi
matwala bhawra kahe kali se jaise
kal rat piya ne bat kahi kuch aisi
matwala bhawra kahe kali se jaise
ghunghat utha ke pyar se
boli sharmao na dildar se
mai hu tumhara tum meri ho
tum meri ho tum meri ho
jane jigar o jane jigar
kal rat piya ne bat kahi kuch aisi
matwala bhawra kahe kali se jaise
kal rat piya ne bat kahi kuch aisi
aankho me aankhe kho gayi
mohabbat ki bate ho gayi
sharma gayi mai dhak dhak
dhak dhak dhadka jigar o dhadka jigar
tire nazar o tire nazar
kal rat piya ne bat kahi kuch aisi
matwala bhawra kahe kali se jaise
kal rat piya ne bat kahi kuch aisi
Day #7, Song #20
Kal kal chhal chhal behti jaun mast nadi ki dhaar
That brings us to the year 1958. Thirteen year after beginning with Samrat Chandragupta, Indeevar was back with the same title in 1958.
This movie is important to us since for the first time Indeevar or Indivar paired with Kalyanji Anandji and that started a most beautiful pairing that gave us some of the most melodious songs in Hindi movies.
It was a Babubhai Mistri movie starring Bharat Bhushan in the title role and Nirupa Roy with him as Princess Helena.
There were eight songs in the movie; three by Bharat Vyas, two each by Indeevar and Hasrat Jaipuri and one by Nirupa Roy. The two songs of Indeevar were:
1. Kal kal chhal chhal behti jaun mast nadi ki dhaar.
2. Rangile more raja dil mein sama ja.
gaye matwle geet man ka mere tar tar
kal kal chhal chhal behti jau mast nadi ki dhar
kal kal chhal chhal behtil jau mast nadi ki dhar
main to rukna na janu main to jhukna na janu
khoi ho jaise hirni ban me hirni ban me
badli jase nil gagan me nil gagan me
khoi hui hu man ki lagan me man ki lagan me
khelu main tufa ke mojo se bar bar
kal kal chhal chhal behti jau mast nadi ki dhar
kal kal chhal chhal behtil jau mast nadi ki dhar
main to rukna na janu main to jhukna na janu
rukna na janu main to jhukna na janu
Day #7, Song #21
Piya jab se liya tune haathon mein haath
His next movie in 1958 was Maya Bazar. He wrote seven songs for SP Rane:
1. Ajab hai samay samay ka rang.
2. Chamki na kiranmala.
3. Mohe kyun bisari naath.
4. Saanwri surat sakhi mere hriday mein.
5. Satao na itna dildar.
6. Sharad poornima ki raat sajni.
7. Taale tale nahin honhaar.
His next movie in 1958 was Hathkadi starring Shakila and Motilal. He paired with Nashad to make songs and made two of the six:
1. Piya jab se liya tune haathon mein haath.
2. Duniya hai badi zaalim.
Both are excellent songs. My favourite is the first one; a duet between Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi and that too in Raag Pahadi!
Please enjoy: Piya jab se liya tune haathon mein haath…
piya jabse liya tune hatho me hath
meri aankho me firne lagi hai barat
mere kano me sahnayi bajne lagi
mere kano me sahnayi bajne lagi
dil dhadakne laga doli sajne lagi
chal padi jaise apne piya ji ke sath
meri aankho me firne lagi hai barat
aaaaaaaaaaaaaa ooooo hoye
tujhse badhkar nahi koi sansar me ho ji ho
tujhse badhkar nahi koi sansar me
paa liya maine sab kuch tere pyar me
har kadam pe hai manjil
agar tu hai sath
meri aankho me firne lagi hai barat
teri palko ki chaiya me
mai kho gayi ho ji ho
teri palko ki chaiya me
mai kho gayi
aaj tan man se saiya teri ho gayi
maino sapno me kah di hai
kuch aisi bat
meri aankho me firne lagi hai barat
piya jabse liya tune hatho me hath
meri aankho me firne lagi hai barat
Day #8, Song #22
Dil leke jaate ho kahan hum to hain yahan
We start Day #8 with his last movie in the year 1958: Sanskar. Out of a total of nine songs composed by Anil Biswas, Indeevar wrote the following four:
1. Saath bhanwre jis se padi.
2. Bhagwan bhi khush khush shaitan bhi razi.
3. Kaanp kaanp jata hai.
4. Radhe tere aansu pi ko rok na payenge.
We shall skip all.
His first movie in 1959 was Khoobsurat Dhoka.
Out of the seven songs composed by S Mohinder, Indeevar wrote one: Do kadam aur ae saathi.
His next movie in 1959 was O Tera Kya Kehna in which six songs were composed by Kalyanji Veerji Shah; Indeevar wrote one: Dil leke jate ho kahan hum to hain yahan. It was picturised on Mehmood and Chitra, the lead cast of the movie.
Subir Sen and kamal Barot sang for them.
Please enjoy: Dil leke jaate ho kahan hum to hain yahan…
dil leke jate ho kaha ham to khade hai yaha
kya hai tumhara jisne pukara
usi pe dene lage jaa dil leke jate ho kaha
ham to khade hai yaha kya hai tumhara jisne pukara
usi pe dene lage jaa dil leke jate ho kaha
dekh reshmi bahe ham to bhul gaye rahe
tadpa gayi bahka gayi teri nashili nigahe
kapde saaf dil maila banke phirte ho chhaila
malum hai hame chal ye kyu jaal rahe ho faila
dil leke jate ho kaha ham to khade hai yaha
kya hai tumhara jisne pukara
usi pe dene lage jaa dil leke jate ho kaha
aasman me badal jaise aankh me kajal
kho jau mai so jau mai mere dil pe dal de aanchal
jante hai jo badalna kam jinka hai chhalna
unse aji achha yahi daman ko bachakar chalna
dil leke jate ho kaha ham to khade hai yaha
kya hai tumhara jisne pukara
usi pe dene lage jaa dil leke jate ho kaha
sun lo kahte hai tumse rutho na aji hamse
ye husn ki sab shan hai ham dilwalo ke dam se
tujhse pyar ho kaise aitbar ho kaise
badle piya tera jiya mausan badalta jaise
dil leke jate ho kaha ham to khade hai yaha
kya hai tumhara jisne pukara usi pe dene lage jaa
dil leke jate ho kaha ham to khade hai yaha
kya hai tumhara jisne pukara usi pe dene lage jaa
dil leke jate ho kaha dil leke jate ho kaha
Day #8, Song #23
Bada khushnaseeb hai jise tu naseeb hai
His next movie in 1959 was his 55th: Chandrasena.
This time Kalyanji Anandji were together as a duo. Out of the seven songs composed by them, Indeevar wrote two:
1. Zara sa muskura do to raasta bhula doon.
2. Diljhum jhum lehraye.
His next movie in 1959 was Madari. Out of eight songs composed by Kalyanji Anandji, Indeevar wrote one: Hum to mit jayenge.
His next movie in 1959 was Police Station. He wrote six songs that were composed by Hemant Kedar and Robin:
1. Di dil se mila lo.

His next movie in 1959 was Bank Manager, a Rakhan movie starring Shekhar and Kamini Kaushal.
Out of six songs composed by Madan Mohan for the movie, Indeevar wrote just one: Kadam behke behke jiya dhadak dhadak jaye.
His next movie in 1958 was a Ravindra Dave movie Satta Bazaar starring Balraj Sahni, Meena Kumari, Suresh and Vijaya Choudhary.
Kalyanji Anandji composed nine delightful numbers in the movie; one of which is included by me in my series Songs That Tug At Your Emotions on my blog: Tumhen yaad hoga kabhi hum mile the. This was penned by Gulshan Bawra.
Indeevar wrote two:
1. Kaisa insaaf tera sab kuchh luta.
2. Kya raha jaane ko.
His last movie in 1959 was Saahil. The movie had nine songs. Seven of these were composed by Suresh Talwar and two by DS Dutt. Indeevar wrote the ones composed by Dutt:

Gun Fight was his first movie in 1960.

2. Neend pardadar hai aankhon mein.
With this we finished sixty of his movies with 212 songs.
His 61st movie was his second and last movie in 1960: Aayi Phirse Bahar. He wrote four songs for Vedpal Verma:
1. Hai ye parda.
2. Hua gulshan veeran hai.
3. Mujhse keh di hai tune.
4. Piya mora budhu piya mora.
His first movie in the year 1961, 17th year of his career was Pyase Panchhi. There were nine songs in the movie composed by Kalyanji Anandji; eight written by Qamar Jalalabadi and only one by Indeevar: Bada kushnaseeb hai jise tu naseeb hai.
This song was sung by Mukesh, the preferred male playback singer of Kalyanji Anandji. Not many people know that Mukesh sang as many songs for Kalyanji Anandji as he sang for Shankar Jaikishan even though he was the singing voice of Raj Kapoor and had SJ compose the songs.
Please enjoy Mukesh singing: Bada khushnaseeb hai jise tu naseeb hai…
bada khushnasib hain jise tu nasib hai
bada khushnasib hain jise tu nasib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
bada khushnasib hain jise tu nasib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
bada khushnasib hain
sadke jaye teri najar ke
teer chalaye jee bhar-bhar ke
sadke jaye teri najar ke
teer chalaye jee bhar-bhar ke
jee uthe hum tujhpe mar ke
haal-ae-dil na puchhiye
haal-ae-dil ajib hai
haye haal-ae-dil na puchhiye
haal-ae-dil ajib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
bada khushnasib hain
hum toh kahan the tere kaabil
tera karam hai tune diya dil
hum toh kahan the tere kaabil
tera karam hai tune diya dil
khud hi chal ke aa gayi manjil
wo to badshah hai bhale hi garib hai
haye wo toh badshah hai bhale hi garib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
use aur chahiye kya jiske tu karib hai
bada khushnasib hain
Day #8, Song #24
Itne bade jahan mein apna bhi koi hota
His next movie in 1961 was Dark Street, a Naresh Saigal movie starring Ashok Kumar and Nishi.
Indeevar wrote two songs for Dattaram Wadkar:
1. Itne bade jahan mein apna bhi koi hota.
2. Pyar se dekhe jo koi.
Both were sung by Suman Kalyanpur.
Who was Dattaram Wadkar? Dattaram Wadkar looked after the rhythm section for Shankar Jaikishan whilst Sebastian D’Souza conducted their orchestra. He emerged as an independent music director with the 1957 movie Abhi Dilli Door Nahin. His music sounded the same as S-J’s even here in the song that I am giving you.
Please enjoy the first one: Itne bade jahan mein apna bhi koi hota…
itne bade jaha me apna bhi koi hota
itne bade jaha me apna bhi koi hota
hum bhi to muskarate apna use banate
itne bade jaha me apna bhi koi hota
mang me sindur hai ya aag laga di
pav me payal hai ya jhanjhr pehna di
shadi ke parde me ye barbadi rachaye
aati hai shehnayi se mausam ki sdaye
haye mosam ki sdaye
itne bade jaha me apna bhi koi hota
hum bhi to muskarate apna use banate
itne bade jaha me
dhan ka jab talak jaha me raz rahega
aadmi ka aadmi mohtaz rahega
lutte hai khof dikhakar lutere
kyu sahe saitan sa insan ke chehre
itne bade jaha me apna bhi koi hota
hum bhi to muskarate apna use banate
itne bade jaha me
logo ne daulat ko khuda kar hi chhod a
logo ne daulat ko khuda kar hi chhod a
insa koi sath juda kar ke hi chhod a
bich se daulat ki ye diwar gira do
utho aadmi ko aadmi se mila do
utho aadmi ko aadmi se mila do

roop tumhara aankho se pee lu
kah do agar tum mar ke bhi jee lu
mar ke bhi jee lu
roop tumhara aankho se pee lu
kah do agar tum mar ke bhi jee lu
mar ke bhi jee lu
aankho se chalke teri amrit ki dhara
tera sath gori mujh ko jiwan se pyara
mile dono hum tum jaise lahar se kinara
roop tumhara aankho se pee lu
kah do agar tum mar ke bhi jee lu
mar ke bhi jee lu
nigahe jhuka ke phir se jara muskura do
kaapte labo se dil ki kahani suna do
kya hai tumhare dil me hame bhi bata do
roop tumhara aankho se pee lu
kah do agar tum mar ke bhi jee lu

The song that he wrote was: Thumak thumak mat chalo sung by Mukesh. Please enjoy it…
thumak-thumak mat chalo ha ji mat chalo kisi kaa dil tadapegaa
thumak-thumak mat chalo ha ji mat chalo kisi kaa dil tadapegaa

Indeevar wrote just one but that too was a beautiful number sung by Mohammad Rafi.
Please enjoy: Roshan tumhin se duniya…
roshan tumhi se duniya, raunaq tumhi jahaan ki
phulo me palne vaali raani ho gulsitaan ki
salaamat raho, salaamat raho
roshan tumhi se duniya, raunaq tumhi jahaan ki
phulo me palne vaali raani ho gulsitaan ki
salaamat raho, salaamat raho
naazuk ho naaz se bhi, tum pyaar se bhi pyaari
naazuk ho naaz se bhi, tum pyaar se bhi pyaari
tum husn se hasi ho kya baat hai tumhaari
kya baat hai tumhaari
aankho me do jahaan hai, maalik ho do jahaan ki
salaamat raho, salaamat raho
salaamat raho, salaamat raho
roshan tumhi se duniya, raunaq tumhi jahaan ki
phulo me palne vaali raani ho gulsitaan ki
salaamat raho, salaamat raho
In the first nine days on Lyrical, I have covered 19 years of his career with 243 songs from 71 movies. This is nearly one seventh of the number of movies in which his songs occurred and number of songs.
I have, therefore, divided the entire period into six nearly equal parts.
We lost our friend Jaswant Singh Lagwal on 25 March 2020. Here is what I wrote immediately as the news of his sad demise reached us:
In short Ye dosti hum nahin todenge…
Yaaron mein yaar mila Jaswant Lagwal,
Halanke uske sang bitayen hain thode hi saal,
Par mere dil mein basa hai gehra khayal,
Apne dil ki ameeri se usne hamen kiya malamaal.
Uske chehre pe hansi har waqt rehti thi khil,
Dilkash raushni ubharti thi jab woh jaata tha mil,
Uske bagair jeena hamara hua hai mushkil,
Uska andaz raha hai suhana aur kaatil.
Hamari hansi tumse thi ab aansu dekho hamare,
Apni hi baat nahin kar raha, mujh sang hain saare,
Yaad rakhenge tumhen jab tak hain chand aur sitare,
Kisi tarah jee lenge tumhari yaadon ke sahare.
Gaye ho to sun lo hamari chhoti si fariyaad,
Wohi muskarata chehra dikhana jab tum aao yaad,
Dosti to rahegi azeez dost jaane ke bhi baad,
Har YKDN mein bana rahega tumhare hone ka swad.
Rajinder Krishan Song of the Week (RKSOW) Week#3
Ye hawa ye raat ye chandni
Rajinder Krishan and Sajjad
Rajinder Krishan’s most memorable pairing with a composer has been with Madan Mohan. Let alone listening to scores of his songs from dozens of movies with Madan Mohan, just the songs of 1958 Kalidas movie Adalat would set him amongst the best lyricists that Hindi films came across. A song that really tugs at your emotions and with extraordinarily beautiful and poignant lyrics is Youn hasraton ke daag mohabbat mein dho liye, khud dil se dil ki baat kahi aur ro liye. Nobody is left unaffected by the personification of Khushi and Gham in the lines:
Ghar se chale the ham to khushi ki talaash mein,
Gham raah mein khade the wahin saath ho liye.
OP Nayyar had once stated that two of the ghazals of Madan Mohan (including Youn hasraton ke daag) were better than all the works of OP Nayyar.
With such high praise of the maestro which he richly deserved, can you imagine him copying a composition of a lesser composer? This was the composition by Sajjad, which Madan Mohan openly copied (and admitted) in his Tujhe kya sunayun main dilruba. It was for the 1958 movie Aakhri Dao and these lyrics (Tujhe kya sunayun) penned by Majrooh were composed by Madan Mohan in exactly the same way that Sajjad did for Ye hawa eye raat ye chandni.
No composer could have paid a better tribute to another composer.
Sajjad Husaain covered himself in controversy as much as he covered himself in glory because of his contentious personality that sought confrontation with almost everybody he worked with including DN Madhok in 1951 movie Saiyan (Wo raat din wo shaam ki guzri hui kahaniyan is one of their songs in the movie that comes to mind). He had problems with Dilip Kumar in the movie of this song: Sangdil. He didn’t like the standard of singing of Lata Mangeshkar.
Anyway, we still recall him for his excellent composition of this song and many others such as for the 1963 movie Rustom Sohrab: Ye kaisi ajab daastan ho gayi hai and Phir tumhari yaad aayi hai sanam.
Rajinder Krishan; what can you say about him and his lyrics? Most of his lyrics seem so natural and effortless. Here pay particular attention to: Mujhe kyun na ho teri aarzu, teri justaju mein bahaar hai?
Why shouldn’t he (Dilip Kumar) entertain aarzu (desire) for her (Madhubala) when there is bahaar (spring) in this quest of his? In other words, he can be forgiven for desiring her as much as any man can be forgiven for desiring spring.
Fourteen years after the Sangdil song, Neeraj used similar imagination in his 1966 Nai Umr Ki Nai Fasal song: Aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai aaj to tere bina neend nahin aayegi:
Saara aalam hai girftaar tere husn me jab
mujhse hi kaise ye barsaat sahi jaayegi?
Have a look at the remaining lyrics of the present song under discussion:
Ye hawa ye raat ye chandani, teri ek ada pe nisaar hai
Mujhe kyun na ho teri aarzu, teri justaju me bahaar hai
Ye hawa ye raat ye chandani…
Tujhe kya khabar hai o bekhabar
tujhe kya khabar hai o bekhabar, teri ek nazar me hai kya asar
Jo gazab me aaye to kahar hai, jo ho meharban vo qaraar hai
Mujhe kyun na ho teri aarzu, teri justaju me bahaar hai
Ye hawa ye raat ye chandani…
Teri baat-baat hai dilnashi
Teri baat-baat hai dilnashi, koi tujhse badhke nahi hasin
Hai kali-kali me jo mastiyan, teri aankh ka ye khumaar hai
Mujhe kyun na ho teri aarzu, teri justaju mai bahaar hai
Ye hawa ye raat ye chandani, teri ek ada pe nisaar hai
Sangdil
Sangdil means cold-hearted. It was an adaptation of the Charlotte Brontë classic Jane Eyre. It was directed by RC Talwar and starred Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Leela Chitnis.
In the story of the movie Dilip Kumar and Madhubala are childhood lovers but are victims of unfortunate circumstances (he was very poor). When rumours about her are spread and reach him, Dilip Kumar, now wealthy, becomes Sangdil and encourages his reputation of being some sort of womaniser. Little do the women know that he is trying to seek the image of Madhubala in them.
There are many videos of the song going on depicting the eternal love between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala both in reel and real life until her father broke the relationship between them fearful that if she married him the father’s family would lose her money-amking capacity that supported the entire family. It is similar to Meena Kumari’s story; for many days after she was born her father kept her in an orphanage because he didn’t have means to look after the child.
I saw the movie and the video of the song is only between Dilip Kumar and the actress Shammi who is one of the women throwing herself at him when he becomes wealthy and foot-loose after his unrequited love with Madhubala. There is no flash-back during the song to his days with Madhubala.
Talat Mehmood for Dilip Kumar
I have gone on record saying that the best songs of Dilip Kumar were sung by Mohammad Rafi. However, there have been quite a few of Dilip Kumar’s memorable songs wthe Talat Mehmood. The first song that comes to my mind is from Dilip Kumar Madhubala 1951 movie Tarana (the first movie between them) that displayed the love and chemistry between them: Seene mein sulagte hain armaan. Anil Biswas composed it on Prem Dhawan’s lyrics.
The second one that comes to my mind is the 1950 movie Babul song penned by Shakeel Badayuni and composed by Naushad: Milte hi aankhen dil hua deewana kisi ka.
Please enjoy a really iconic song penned by Rajinder Krishan: Ye hawa ye raat ye chandni…
Our Dedication to a Lyricist who Always Dived Deep to find Pearls
Anands All The way
The 1960 movie Kala Bazaar (Black Market) was produced by Dev Anand for Navketan Films and directed by his brother Vijay Anand. The film starred all three brothers: Dev Anand as the black-marketeer Raghuvir (mainly earning money through sale of movie tickets in black), Vijay Anand as Nandkumar Chattopadhayay – the original lover of Waheeda Rehman as Alka – who magnanimously gives up his love for Alka in favour of Raghuvir and Chetan Anand as advocate Desai who fights an interesting court battle for Raghuvir after he had given up his bad ways in order to woo Alka.
A reformed Raghuvir gets to keep all the money he made from Kala Bazaar including a house on Marine Drive where he started living with his hitherto impoverished mother Leela Chitnis and sister Nanda; a fact that won’t have been lost on public at large and Alka.
This was the second directorial venture of Vijay Anand after Nau Do Gyarah.
Bombay Especially in the Rains
This movie was made at a time when Bombay was Bombay and not Mumbai and Hindi films were referred to as Hindi films and not as Bollywood Films as if these cannot exist without being a poorer copy of Hollywood films.
One of Dev Anand’s early successes as Kala Bazaar operator was on the premier of Mother India in Maratha Mandir. Several stars made their appearance at the premier: include Dilip Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Guru Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Sohrab Modi, Mohammed Rafi, Nargis, Nadira and Nimmi. Others seen include, Kumkum, Mukri, Yakub, Naseem Banu and Kumari Naaz. The film also showed Liberty and Metro cinemas, very nostalgic for all of us who grew up in Bombay.
The song that I have chosen is near the end of the movie and shows Bombay during rains including the Marine Drive.
Shailendra and SD Burman
Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra were in the team of Shankar Jaikishan who were the ‘house-musicians’ for RK Films of Raj Kapoor. However, they wrote songs for other music directors too. This one is for Sachin Dev Burman who often said that his second name was the name of his favourite hero: Dev Anand; more often than not Dev Anand movies had music by SD Burman.
Shailendra and SD Burman paired together starting with 1951 movie Buzdil. We fondly recall their pairing for two iconic 1963 movies Bandini and Meri Surat Teri Aankhen. In Bandini they fell apart and hence in addition to Shailendra, SD Burman tried Sampooran Singh Kalra (Gulzar). And then of course Guide was released in 1965 with excellent songs by Shailendra including his trademark delving deep song: Wahan kaun hai tera mussafir jayega kahan?
Lyrics
I chose this song as the Shailendra Song of the Week because of Shailendra’s delightful skill at expressing the emotions of lovers during the rains.
In his very first movie for Raj Kapoor: Barsaat (I have still not found out why this 1949 movie was titled Barsaat by Raj Kapoor as Barsaat had nothing to do with the progress of the story. I have a feeling that the title of the movie stole from Shailendra’s song composed by Shankar Jaikishan: Barsaat mein hamse mile tum sajan).
In 1960 Bimal Roy movie Parakh he came up with the best rain song ever in Hindi movies: O sajana barkha bahaar aayi.
In 1955 movie Shree 420, no one can ever forget the lovers under the umbrella in Bombay rains: Raj Kapoor and Nargis singing Pyar hua iqraar hua.
And of course in 1965 Guide, he tugged at our emotions with his Din dhal jaaye song; viz:
Aisee rim-jhim aisee phuharen, aisee hee thee barsaat
Khud se juda aur jug se paraye, ham dono the sath
Phir se woh sawan ab kyon naa aaye, din dhal jaaye…
(some of the words that he had already used in this song):
Rim-jhim ke taraane leke aayi barasaat
Yaad aaye kisi se vo pahali mulaaqaat
Bheege tan man pade ras ki phuhaar
Pyaar ka sandesa laayi barkha bahaar
Main na bolun, main na bolun aankhen kare akhiyon se baat
Rim jhim ke taraane leke aayi barasaat
Sunake matavaale kaale baadalo kaa shor
Rum jhum ghum ghum naache man kaa mor
Sapano kaa saathi chal raha mere saath
Rim jhim ke taraane leke aayi barasaat
Jab milate ho tum to chhute hain dil ke taar
Milane ko tum se main kyon tha beqaraar
Rah jaati hai
Rah jaati hai kyon hontho tak aake dil ki baat
Rim jhim ke taraane leke aayi barasaat
Yaad aaye kisi se vo pahali mulaqaat
What do the Lyrics Signify?
Unlike Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat in which Barsaat lyrics don’t mean a thing, here, there is a chance meeting in the rain in Mumbai between Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman after she had already turned him down because of his Kala Bazaar ways. Later, when she regarded him as a reformed man, she was in love with Vijay Anand.
Hence, this song was the home-coming for the lovers; the drenching of their souls. One is reminded of Shree 420’s Ramaiya Vastavaiya, a home-coming for Raj Kapoor as Shree 420.
But, rim-jhim is gentle rain and Vijay Anand did it very gently through the meeting in the rain.
Please Enjoy
All in all a heart-warming duet between Mohammad Rafi and Geeta Dutt put together by Shailendra and SD Burman.
Please enjoy: Rimjhim ke tarane leke aayi barsaat…
I hope you liked my choice for the Shailendra Song of the Week #3.
Remembering OP Nayyar on His Birth Anniversary Today
(This post appeared on YKDN on 16 Jan 2020)
Shankar Jaikishan fans (may God increase their tribe) will be shocked that I am remembering a composer other than S-J in the same breath as paying tribute to Hasrat Jaipuri. They are like Charminar cigarette smokers or Old Monk rum drinkers; for them there can never be another smoke or tipple.
I am as devoted a fan of S-J as anyone else. Much before anyone formed a group to honour them, on my page Lyrical, I paid a 45 days tribute to them.
However, I don’t feel sorry to appreciate MDs, Lyricists, Singers and Actors other than those associated with S-J.
OP Nayyar was born on 16 Jan 1926 in Lahore (now in Pakistan). At the age of 23, OP Nayyar composed the background score for the movie Kaneez. Three years later, in 1952, he was a full fledged music director for the movie Aasman. OP Nayyar perfected songs whose beats (often horse-trot beatsuch as in 1957 movie Naya Daur’s song Maang ke saath tumhaara) became so popular that people were often heard humming these everywhere. He also delved into raaga based songs although, in all humility, he claimed that he had no knowledge of classical music. Raag Peelu or Pilu, followed by Pahadi, were his favourite raagas in songs.
He didn’t like to have Lata Mangeshkar sing any of his songs as he didn’t find her voice sexy. Most of his female songs have been sung by Shamshad Begum, Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. He depended heavily on Asha Bhosle and in a television interview he said, “She was almost like a wife to me.” OP Nayyar and Asha Bhosle parted in 1974. Soon after that, in 1974, she received Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award for his song: Chain se hamako kabhi aap ne jeene na diya that was intended to be used for the 1973 movie Praan Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye but didn’t find a place in the final cut.
OP Nayyar paired with major lyricists Majrooh Sultanpuri and Sahir Ludhianvi. With the latter he received the Filmfare Award for 1957 movie Naya Daur.
Hasrat ji stayed mostly with Shankar Jaikishan. However, he was the Shehanshah-e-Rumaniyat and his romantic songs were composed by almost all important composers. Here in this series started by me in the New Year 2020, I have already given you two of them: SD Burman and Vasant Desai.
Hasrat ji paired with OP Nayyar in the 1957 Ved Mohan movie Johnny Walker with the comdeian Johny Walker in the title role. He wrote all six songs of the movie for OP Nayyar. Howrah Bridge and Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujala in 1958 also had Hasrat Jaipuri’s songs composed by OPN including this one.
The 1960 Rakhan movie starring Ashok Kumar, Padmini and her sister Ragini had most of the songs penned by Qamar Jalalabadi (two of these find mention in my Raaga based songs blogs: Beqasi hadd se jab guzr jaye and Tu hai mera prem devta that has both Travancore sisters dancing). However, Hasrat ji and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan had one song and four songs respectively in this movie too. Hasrat’s song was: O ji sawan mein tu beqraar sajanwa se.
Howrah Bridge
The last part of the song takes you under the Howrah Bridge, a miracle of its times. Built over the Hoogly River, it was commissioned as a cantilever bridge in 1943 and happened to be the third longest such bridge in the world (presently the sixth longest).
The bridge has featured in many movies and fills all Indians with romantic nostalgia such as in Woh sham kuchh ajeeb thi ye sham bhi ajeeb hai in the picturisation of which Rajesh Khanna in a polo neck and Waheeda Rehman in saree and cardigan pass under the bridge in their boat within the first minute of the song.
The movie Howrah Bridge was directed by Shakti Samanta who was used to making a super hit movie once every two years or so.
The story in short is that Ashok Kumar and his brother are running a business of their father in Rangoon when his brother disappears one day with family heirloom to sell it in Calcutta. He is deceived by smugglers and Ashok Kumar comes looking for them.
Ashok Kumar pretends to have fallen for the hotel singer Madhubala (her name is Edna in the movie). But, actually he wants to use her contacts to locate the smugglers.
At this juncture, she is actually in love with him and she sings this to him in a tonga to express her feeelings of elation for having found the love of her life.
Hasrat ji does an impressive job of her expressing her feelings through song. Asha Bhosle sings it in great style.
The song has one of the longest whistling in the prelude.
Lyrics
One would expect remarkably good lyrics form Hasrat Jaipuri and he doesn’t fail us:
Ye kya kar dala tune dil tera ho gaya
Hasi hasi me jalim dil mera kho gaya
Wo khel dikhaya tune madhosh banaya tune
O jadugar matwale, bechain banaya tune
Tune re piya, kaisa diya, najro ka paymana
Ye kya kar dala tune dil tera ho gaya
Hasi hasi me jalim dil mera kho gaya
Jab aankh mile sharmaun main khoi khoi jaun
Aankho ki kaliyan kampen jab samne tujhko paun
Sun mere dil, sapno me mil, dard hua diwana
Ye kya kar dala tune dil tera ho gaya
Hasi hasi me jalim dil mera kho gaya
Pehle tha zamana feeka ab laage teekha teekha
Mausam ka dil bhi dhadke kuchh haal na puchho ji ka
Ye kya kar dala tune dil tera ho gaya
Hasi hasi me jalim dil mera kho gaya
One look at her face and histrionics tell the story of her being head over heels in love with him. He looks amused since his primary aim is different.
You see Calcutta by night in the year 1958 and it surprises you to see that it was as crowded in 1958 too!
Please Enjoy

I hoped you liked my choice of Hasrat Jaipuri Song of the Week #3.
Rajinder Krishan Song of the Week (RKSOW) Week#2 Phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhayi hai
Catching-up to do
I started off with Rajinder Krishan really late in comparison to Hasrat Jaipuri and then Shailendra. From the 29th of January 2020, the fifth week started and I had put up only Week #1 song for Rajinder Krishan. In the next few days, therefore, I want to catch up and be at par with the count for Hasrat Jaipuri.
Can Others Too Put up?
Yes, indeed. After the month of February when I would have caught up, the others can also bid for their chosen month in which they would put up.
Song that Tug at Your Emotions
On my blog, there are two important ongoing series and these are the most popular articles on my blog:
Raaga Based Song of the Day. Songs that Tug at Your Emotions.
Phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhayi hai is included as Song #25 (not in any particular order or ranking) in the second series. Therefore, all the write-up about the song and the relationship between Rajinder Krishan and Madan Mohan is already there:
Please go through it. You would gain a lot.
Shaam, Gham and Tanhayi
These are some of my favourite themes. So one can imagine all three together in one song.
If you read the write up, you would come across: There is a beautiful reference to फिर तसव्वुर तेरे पहलू में बिठा जाएगा.
Ladies and gentlemen, words and lyrics are not just or mere words. These are windows to the world of the poet or lyricist’s तसव्वुर or imagination. He (very very rarely she) invites you to enter that world. And that’s why, in this group of serious lovers of music and songs (‘Yaad Kiya Dil Ne‘ or YKDN), I have discouraged people from just putting up urls. If the तसव्वुर of the poet or the lyricist doesn’t strike notes with your own तसव्वुर, you are missing out on the fun as much as the expression used frequently in Sri Guru Granth Sahib: गूंगे की मिठाई. Why do you want to be dumb when God has gifted you words of your own? This is social media and not something private of your own. If you want to keep your thoughts to yourself, you have chosen the wrong media! All of us want to hear why you liked the mithayi and what you liked best about it. You may even want to say something about the halwai!
Do you feel you don’t have imagination and or words? Ha! Unlike Lata Mangeshkar who opposed all competition, I have actively encouraged friends to write in all my groups. Some of them have mentioned me in the Preface of their books they published after trying out writing for the first time in my groups.
Writing is absolutely similar to love-making; initially it appears strange and even ridiculous. Later, you have family of your own that you love more than any other family. Try it. You would want to read and re-read your own write up over and over again and other people’s reactions to it. Songs and their videos are already available on the net. What do you say? Try फिर तसव्वुर तेरे पहलू में बिठा जाएगा. You can write a full-fledged article just on this line. Try it ; the entire universe is just your imagination and you feel you don’t have any!
My Own Poetry
Even though already given in the accompanying article, I am giving you separately too. I wrote this poem at the age of 16. It is a love poem: Tu (shortest title for a poem):
Please enjoy Talat Mehmood sing a composition of Madan Mohan on the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan a song from the 1964 Vinod Kumar (his debut movie as a director) movie Jahan Ara: Phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhayi hai….
I hope you liked my choice of song for the Week #2.
