I am fond of calling myself a lyrical man; words of the songs are often the most important part of the songs for me. Indeed, on the Facebook I have a page titled ‘Lyrical’ to honour and pay tribute to various lyricists. I have several (almost a dozen) posts on my blog on my favourite lyricist and poet Shakeel Badayuni.
Jan Nisar Akhtar has been chosen by me as Lyricist #6 (not in any particular order or ranking) in Remembering Great Lyricists series; immediately after Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The following posts about Jan Nisar Akhtar’s songs have been reconstructed from the same Facebook page Lyrical.
I started the series to bring home the point that whilst we genuinely love everything that Shakeel wrote, many other contemporary poets and lyricists were also good and popular.
Before Jan Nisar Akhtar, on Lyrical, I have taken up five lyricists of great fame:
1. Shailendra. The opening song that I selected was Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai.
2. Rajinder Krishan with his Mujhase mat poochh mere ishq mein.
3. Kaifi Azmi with his Jaane kyaa dhoondati rehati hain ye aankhen mujh mein.
4. Sahir Ludhianvi with Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko.
5. Majrooh Sultanpuri with Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai. (Yet to be published here).
Tonight, as I said, we take up our sixth lyricst, Jan Nisar Akhtar‘s creation. The number of posts here depend upon the number of songs put up. For Jan Nosar Akhtar, from his 151 songs, I took up 32 songs and hence we have this post in Part I and Part II.
This is the Part II.
I just want to remind you that I am not taking up these lyricists in any order or ranking; it is not my intention to prove #1 being better than #2 and so on.
Jan Nisar Akhtar was born a little more than two years before my favourite Shakeel, on the 18th Feb 1914 in Gwalior. Unlike Shakeel, who was the first to venture into poetry (only a distant uncle was a poet), Jan Nisar Akhtar’s father Muztar Khairabadi was poet as was his father’s elder brother, Bismil Khairabadi.
Like many other poets of that era, including Shakeel, he was part of Progressive Writers Movement.
He shifted to Bhopal from Gwalior where he took up job as Head of Department for Urdu and Persian.
In 1949 he shifted to Mumbai and met progressive writers like Rajider Singh Bedi and Mulk Raj Anand. It was only six years later, when he was 41 years old that success came his way when he wrote lyrics of the songs for the movie Yasmin.
And then for the next three and half decades he penned lyrics in the movies until his death on 16 Aug 1976. His son Javed Akhtar is also a lyricist in the movies.
Song #19
Main abhi gair hoon mujhe apna na kaho
Yesterday I gave you two songs from his 1960 movie Kalpana starring Ashok Kumar and Padmini. OP Nayyar composed the first in Raag Desh and Khammaj: Bekasi hadd se jab guzr jaaye. He composed the second in Raag Lalit: Tu hai mera prem devta, sung beautifully by Mohammad Rafi and Manna Dey.
Today, we take up his movie Road No. 303 first, the second one of three movies in 1960.
Road No. 303 was directed by Dharam Kumar and starred Shubha Khote, Mehmood, KN Singh and Helen.
For the first time in his career Jan Nisar Akhtar was with C Arjun and they made the following songs:
1. Bura hai na jana.
2. Pehli pehli baar mile hain do deewane.
3. Sorry sorry very sorry aap ki kasam.
4. Sun lo mehrbaan mushkil jeena yahan.
5. Dil ko ye kya hua.
6. Mera dil gya to kahan gya.
None of these made any impact.
Dr. Shaitan was his next movie in 1960. It starred Helen, Sheikh Mukhtar, Prem Nath and Shakila.
This was his second movie with N Dutta and they made the following songs:
1. Tum mile woh din dhale.
2. Hamen raaste mein chhede kyun.
3. Mausam suhana hai door kahin chal.
4. Gore gore gaalon se ujli dhoop.
5. Main hoon atom bomb.
6. Na na na ab na aake jaana.
Once again, none of these are worth giving here.
His first movie in 1961 was Mr. India, a GP Sippy prodced and directed movie starring Geeta Bali, IS Johar, Firoz Khan and Helen.
He paired with MD GS Kohli for the first time and they made the following songs (the first one was penned by Anjaan):
1 “Mat Poochh Mera Hai Kaun” Mohammed Rafi
2 “Dekha Na Jaye” Geeta Dutt
3 “Chod Ke Na Jaana” Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle
4 “Hay Teri Ankh Mein Woh Kamal Hai” Mohammed Rafi
5 “Kahan Chali Chham Se” Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle
6 “Kya Soch Raha Matwale” Mohammed Rafi
7 “Mein Machis Ki Tili” Geeta Dutt
8 “Nazar Yeh Teri” Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle
None of them are worth giving here.
You would have noticed that even for great lyricists like Majrooh, one out of ten songs really make it big!
Do Bhai was a Vishram Bedekar movie starring Abhi Bhattacharya, Anil Kumar, Sulochana Latkar and Shakila.
This was his third movie with N Dutta and they made the following songs:
1. Aye dil yeh bata ye bata kya mujhe.
2. Chacha daudiyo re.
3. Kaun jaane har bahane.
4. De ke daga mere dil ko luta.
5. Bala se dil gaya.
6. Har har gange har har bol.
Once again, none of these became popular.
That brings us to the year 1962. His first movie was main Aur Mera Bhai.
Once agin a Dharam Kumar movie starring Ajit, Ameeta, Helen and Mehmood.
He paired for the second time with C Arjun and they made the following songs:
1. Main abhi gair hoon.
2. Bheegi bheegi hawa shokh dhara.
3. O gori zulm kare.
4. Insaan kitne yug beete.
5. Aaya ho to jaane ka.
6. Zara zara bhi hamase ghabraana na.
Lets listen to this composition by C Arjun sung beautifully by Asha Bhosle and Mukesh: Main abhi gair hoon mujhe apna na kaho…
mai abhi gair hu mujhko abhi apna na kaho
hay mar jayenge mit jayenge aisa na kaho
mai abhi gair hu
dil ki dhadkan ki tarah dil me basi rahti ho
kwaab ban kar meri palko pe saji rahti ho
kwaab ban kar meri palko pe saji rahti ho
kya kahu tumko agar jane tamanna na kahu
mai abhi gair hu mujhko abhi apna na kaho
mai abhi gair hu
yu na dekho ke meri saans ruki jati hai
jo najar uthti hai sharma ke jhuki jati hai
jo najar uthti hai sharma ke jhuki jati hai
meri najro ko mere dil ka takaja na kaho
hay mar jayenge mit jayenge aisa na kaho
hay mar jayenge
raaj kyun raaj rahe iski jarurat kya hai
hamse daman na chhudaao ye kayamat kya hai
hamse daman na chhudaao ye kayamat kya hai
ham to kahte hain hame shauk se diwana kaho
mai abhi gair hu
Song #20
Dhoonde nazar nazar mera chand hai kidhar
Dilli Ka Dada was his second and last movie in 1962.
Dili Ka Dada was a RS Tara movie starring Jeevan Kala, Leela Mishra, Sheikh Mukhtar, Shekhar and Mukri.
He paired with N Dutta for the fourth time and wrote three out of the seven songs of the movie (the others having been penned by Sahir Ludhianvi).
Following were the songs penned by him in the movie:
1. Dhoonde nazar nazar mera chand hai kidhar.
2. Chehra kya gulaab hai jalwa behisaab hai.
3. Aye chingu kya aye shingu.
I am giving you the first one because it is a waltzing number sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle.
Please enjoy: Dhoonde nazar nazar mera chand hai kidhar…..
dhundhe nazar-nazar, meraa chaand hai kidhar
aa jagmagaake, yun muskuraake
mujhko rahe na apni khabar
dole kadam-kadam, banaa husn bhi sitam
dil ko bachaake, khud ko chhupaake
aakhir kahaan ab le jaaye hum
dhundhe nazar-nazar
aaja ke mai hun tere vaste, aankho ki shamme jalaye huye
vo shokh najre jo pichha kare, badhate kadam dagmagaye hue
aaja ke mai hun tere vaste, aankho ki shamme jalaye huye
vo shokh najre jo pichha kare, badhate kadam dagmagaye hue
aa jagmagaake, yun muskuraake
mujhko rahe na apni khabar
dhundhe nazar-nazar
kah do humko na dekhe koi
aise ke ye dil dhadakne lage
mai kyaa karun mere sine me jab
ek aag mithi bhadakne lage
kah do humko na dekhe koi
aise ke ye dil dhadakne lage
mai kyaa karun mere sine me jab
ek aag mithi bhadakne lage
dil ko bachaake, khud ko chhupaake
aakhir kahaan ab le jaaye hum
dhundhe nazar-nazar, meraa chaand hai kidhar
aa jagmagaake, yun muskuraake
mujhko rahe na apni khabar
dole kadam-kadam, banaa husn bhi sitam
dil ko bachaake, khud ko chhupaake
aakhir kahaan ab le jaaye hum
dhundhe nazar-nazar
Song #21
Aye dilruba
His next movie was the 1963 movie Rustom Sohrab starring Prithviraj Kapoor and Prem Nath in the title roles. A Ramsay production, the songs of the movie were composed by Sajjad Hussain.
The two famous songs of the movie: Ye kaisi ajab dastaan ho gayi hai and Phir tumahaari yaad aayee aye sanam were not written by Jan Nisar Akhtar but by Qamar Jalalabadi.
His song Aye dilruba sung by Lata Mangeshkar for Suraiya was mildly popular. (To know more about the legend of Rustom Sohrab and other songs in the movie follow this link to my blog: http://www.sunbyanyname.com/…/songs-that-tug-at-your-emoti…/)
Please enjoy: Aye dilruba….
ai dilruba, ai dilruba
ai dilruba nazre mila
kuchh to mile gam ka sila
ai dilruba
ashko ka ek dariya baha
pyasa tha dil pyasa raha
nazre mila, nazre mila
rehne na de koi gila
ai dilruba, ai dilruba
ai dilruba, ai dilruba
ai dilruba ai dilruba
ai dilruba, ai dilruba

ai dilruba nazre mila
kuchh to mile gam ka sila
ai dilruba

aaj kuch aisi dil ki halat hai
aaj kuch aisi dil ki halat hai

tumko ab tak na bhul paye hai
tumko ab tak na bhul paye hai
phir na kehna humne bulaya nahi
tum agar aa sako to aa jao
Song #24
Jitni haseen ho tum
There was no movie for me for the next four years, as a lyricist. He was the producer and screen-writer for the 1967 movie Bahu Begum, though.
In 1970, after a gap of four years, he was back with Mangu Dada. The movie was directed by Maruti and starred Sheikh Mukhtar, and Faryal.
For the fourth time. Jan Nisar paired with C Arjun and they made the following songs:
1. Jitni haseen ho tum.
2. Saj dhaj ke jab tu nikle.
3. Dhoonde na milega dildaar tumhen.
4. Hosh mein tum bhi.
5. Abhi to baki hai kahani raaton ki.
6. Peene wale meri aankhon se.
Please enjoy Mohammad Rafi sing: Jitni haseen ho tum….
jitni hasin ho tum haye utni hi bewafa ho
fir bhi mere liye tum fir bhi mere liye tum
mai kya batau kya ho jitni hasin ho tum
tumko saja rakha hai palko ki chilmano me
tum sans le rahi ho is dil ki dhadkano me
itni karib ho kar itni karib ho kar
fir kyu juda juda ho jitni hasin ho tum
mujhko siwa tumhare kuch bhi pata nahi hai
dunia me hai to kya hai dunia me kya nahi hai
kitni badgum ho tum fir bhi badgum ho
naraj ho khafa ho jitni hasin ho tum
itni pe hamne wade wafa na payi
apne liye tumhari koi ada na payi
lagta hai yu ke mujhse lagta hai yu ke mujhse
rutha mera khuda ho itni hasin ho tum
utni hi bewafa ho fir bhi mere liye tum
fir bhi mere liye tum mai kya batau kya ho
jitni hasin ho tum utni hi bewafa ho
jitni hasin ho tum utni hi bewafa ho

4. O jana na ye dil deewana.
If you notice, suddenly after pairing with OP Nayyar, Jan Nisar was relegated into B grade movies starring Dara Singh and Shiekh Mukhtar, at this stage. It has been an hour this evening since I am researching and still I haven’t found a song to give you.
In 1972 he didn’t write songs for any movie.
In the year 1973, 23 years after his having joined Hindi movies, he penned songs for Prem Parbat.
Prem Parbat was a movie directed by Ved Rahi. It starred Satish Kaul, Hema Malini, Rehana Sultan and Nana Palsikar.

Anyone of you who know me well by now would know that I am going to give you the first one composed beautifully by Jaidev in the Raaga of my place: Raag Pahadi, Tal Kaherava.
It was worth the wait, you would say! The song is picturised on Rehana Sultan and Nana Palsikar. Some of you would want to see my favourite colour Yellow in it! See the full songs and you’s find it many times.
Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar sing: Ye dil aur unki nigaahon ke saaye…..
ye pal pal ujaale, ye pal pal adhere
ye pal pal ujaale, ye pal pal adhere
bahut thade thade, hai raaho ke saaye
bahut thade thade, hai raaho ke saaye
ye dil aur unki nigaaho ke saaye
mujhe gher lete, hai baaho ke saaye
mujhe gher lete, hai baaho ke saaye
dhadakate hai dil kitni, aazaadiyo se
dhadakate hai dil kitni, aazaadiyo se
bahut milte julte, hai in vaadiyo se
bahut milte julte, hai in vaadiyo se
mohabbat ki rangi panaaho ke saaye
mohabbat ki rangi panaaho ke saaye
ye dil aur unki nigaaho ke saaye

mujhe gher lete, hai baaho ke saaye

Song #27
Kab tere husn se inkaar kiya hai maine
Sandhya was his last movie in 1975. The movie starred Aziz Mirza, Sharad Kumar and Asha Chandra.
He was with Khayyam for the third time and they made the following three songs:
1. Kab tere husn se inkaar kiya hai maine.
2. Ang ang rang chhalkaye.
3. Ye dilwale.
Please enjoy Mahendra Kapoor sing these beautiful lyrics penned by Jan Nisar Akhtar: Kab tere husn se inkaar kiya hai maine….
kab tere husn se inkar kiya hai maine
kab tere husn se inkar kiya hai maine
jindagi tujhse bahut pyar kiya hai maine
muskurati hai kisi aankh me kajal banke
kisi ke dhadak uthti hai aachal banke
kabhi phulo ke kataro se chalak jati hai
kabhi shole kabhi shabnam se lapak jati hai
kaise kaise tera didar kiya hai maine
kaise kaise tera didar kiya hai maine
tu har ek rang har ek saye me najar aati hai
jarre jarre se kiran bankar ubhar aati hai
tere jadu teri khusbu teri muskano ko
tere umde hue machle hue toofano ko
apni sanso me giraftar kiya hai maine
jindagi tujhse bahut pyar kiya hai maine
tujhko chaha to magar koi takaja na kiya
maine bhule se tere pyar ko ruswa na kiya
ye bata maine kabhi tujhse churai aankhe
tere chehre se kaha maine hatai aankhe
mujhko kab tera gunehgar kiya hai maine
jindagi tujhse bahut pyar kiya hai maine
maut aayegi to ek pal ki na fursat degi
saans lene ki bhi kambakht na mohlat degi
jite jee kisliye phir aapko nasad kare
jindagi ek bhi pal kyu tera barbad kare
lamha lamha ye ikrar kiya hai maine
jindagi tujhse bahut pyar kiya hai maine
jindagi tujhse bahut pyar kiya hai maine

pahne payaliya ghote ki angaiya
khud se bhi sharmaungi
saiya ke gavo me taro ki chhav me
banke dulhaniya jaungi
sasu khadi khadi khadi mora ghunghata uthaye
dekhe mohe jiya bhare kaha balihari jaye
bole sasur badi pari bahu hum chun ke laye
hoke magan mai bhi khushi khushi moti lutawe
kahve nandiya bhabhi to bhaiya
mai to chura le jaungi
saiya ke gavo me taro ki chhav me
banke dulhaniya jaungi
mohe bhaye ye resham ke jode
pal pal khanke chandi ke tode
bala devra aa pichha na chhod e
achra khenche baiya marode
kahwe jethani mai tohe rani
sone ke jhumke laungi
saiya ke gavo me taro ki chhav me
banke dulhaniya jaungi
layi more piya tore liye bala joban re
kaali late mori bhara bhara gora badan re
garva mohe laga laga piya bhari di jo man re
pyasi mai na rahu kasam tohe more sajan re
jitna satave jitna fasave utni mai wari jaungi
saiya ke gavo me taro ki chhav me
banke dulhaniya jaungi
pahne payaliya ghote ki angaiya
khud se bhi sharmaungi
Song #29
Aap youn faaslon se guzarate rahe
Aakhri Sajda was his first out of two movies in 1977 that starred Tabrez, Helen, Veena and Murad.
He paired with Sajjad Hussain to make the following songs:
1. Nigahen shauk se.
2. Bula lo dar pe habib-e-khuda.
3. Kisi se mili hai nazar.
4. Kisko pukaroon tere siwa.
5. Nazar milao pata chale.
His next and last movie in 1977 was a Yusuf Naqvi movie called Shankar Hussain starring Madhu Chanda and Kanwaljit.
Once again he paired with Khayyam for just one song and that was memorable. The other memorable song of the movie: Kahin ek masoom naazuk si ladaki was penned by Kamal Amrohi who wrote the story of the movie.
Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar sing: Aap youn faaslon se guzarate rahe….
aap yu faasalo se guzarate rahe
dil se kadamo ki aavaaz aati rahi
aahato se adhere chamakate rahe
raat aati rahi raat jaati rahi
ho gunagunaati rahi meri tanahaaiyaan
dur bajati rahi kitani shahanaaiyaan
zindagi zindagi ko bulaati rahi
aap yu faasalo se guzarate rahe
dil se kadamo ki aavaaz aati rahi aap yu
katara katara pighalata raha aasma
katara katara pighalataa raha aasma
ruh ki vaadiyo mein na jaane kahan
ik nadi ik nadi dilarubaa git gaati rahi
aap yu faasalo se guzarate rahe
dil se kadamo ki aavaaz aati rahi aap yu
aap ki garm baaho mein kho jaayege
aap ki narm jaago pe so jaayege so jaaege
muddato raat nide churaati rahi
aap yu faasalo se guzarate rahe
dil se kadamo ki aavaaz aati rahi aap yu

ai dil-e-nadaan, ai dil-e-nadaan
aarzoo kya hai, justju kya hai
ai dil-e-nadaan
ham bhatakte hai, kyo bhatakte hai, dashto-sehra me
aisa lagta hai, mauj pyasi hai, apne dariya me
kaisi uljhan hai, kyo ye uljhan hai
ek saya sa, ru-bru kya hai
ai dil-e-nadaan, ai dil-e-nadaan
aarzoo kya hai, justju kya hai
kya qayamat hai, kya musibat hai
kah nahi sakte, kiska armaan hai
zindagi jaise, khoyi khoyi hai, haira haira hai
ye zamin chup hai, aasmaan chup hai
phir ye dhadkan si, char su kya hai
ai dil-e-nadaan, ai dil-e-nadaan
Song #32
Bemurrawat bewafa begana-e-dil aap hain
Five years after Razia Sultan, in 1988, Soorma Bhopali was released which had one of Jan Nisar Akhtar’s songs, 12 years after he died.
This movie was directed by Jagdeep who had played Soorma Bhopali in 1975 Sholay. The movie starred Jagdeep, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Rekha, Aruna Irani and Danny Danzongpa.
Jan Nisar Akhtar’s Makhmal ho ya taat ka parda was composed by Dilip Sen Sameer Sen, but, didn’t make any impact.
So that finished the journey through Jan Nisar Akhtar’s songs, a journey that started in 1950 and lasted up to 1988, 12 years after his demise.
I have given you 31 songs from about 314 songs that he penned in the movies.
In the end lets recall two of his best loved songs.
The first one is from the 1966 movie Sushila in which his songs were composed by C Arjun. This one sung by Mubarak Begum has some of his best lyrics.
Please enjoy: Bemurrawat bewafa begana-e-dil aap hain….. (Don’t be confused by Bahu Begum poster in the video)
dard-e-dil, dard-e-vafaa, dard-e-tamannaa kyaa hai
aap kyaa jaane mohabbat kaa takaaza kyaa hai
bemuravvat bewafaa begana-e-dil aap hai
bemuravvat bewafaa begana-e-dil aap hai
aap maane yaa na maane mere kaatil aap hai
bemuravvat bewafaa
aap se shikva hai mujhko gair se shiava nahi
aap se shikva hai mujhko gair se shikva nahi
jaanti hun dil me rakh lene ke kaabil aap hai
bemuravvat bewafaa
saans leti hun to yun mahsus hota hai mujhe
saans leti hun to yun mahsus hota hai mujhe
jaise mere dil ki har dhadkan me shaamil aap hai
bemuravvat bewafaa
gam nahi jo laakh tufaano se takraanaa pades
gam nahi jo laakh tufaano se takraanaa pade
mai vo kashti hun ki jis kashti kaa saahil aap hai
bemuravvat bewafaa begana-e-dil aap hai
aap maane yaa na maane mere kaatil aap hai
bemuravvat bewafaa
Song #33
Ye dil aur unaki nigaahon ke saaye
Finally, I am giving you my most favourite song penned by Jan Nisar Akhtar, even if again.
Before that permit me to tell you that during the period of four-year to his death he published three collections of his works most important of them being, Khak-e-Dil (The Ashes of Heart), which has his representative poems from 1935 to 1970, and which won him the Sahitya Akademi Award (Urdu) in 1976.
Jan Nisar was commissioned by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru to collate the best Hindustani poetry of last 300 years, and later the first edition of the book titled Hindustan Hamara (Our Hindustan) in two volumes was released by Indira Gandhi. It contained Urdu verses on a topics, ranging from love and praise for India and its history, to festivals like Holi and Diwali, on Indian rivers like the Ganges, Yamuna and the Himalayas.
He produced the 1966 movie Bahu Begum and that’s why in his song video of Bemurrawat bewafa, the poster of the film is shown.
I have given you this song earlier too without the video from the 1973 movie Prem Parbat; the reason being the film print got burnt.
Anyway, please enjoy in Raag Pahadi, Tal Kaherava, the song composed by Jaidev and sung by Lata Mangeshkar: Ye dil aur unaki nigaahon ke saaye……
ye dil aur unakii, nigaaho.n ke saaye – (3)
mujhe gher lete, hai.n baaho.n ke saaye – (2)
pahaa.Do.n ko cha.nchal, kiran chuumatii hai – (2)
havaa har nadii kaa badan chuumatii hai – (2)

I hope you liked my selection of 31 of his best songs (in the end two were repeated) from a total of his 314 songs in Hindi movies.
If I left out any favourite of yours, please let me know.
