I am fond of calling myself a lyrical man; words of the songs are often the most important part of the songs for me. Indeed, on the Facebook I have a page titled ‘Lyrical’ to honour and pay tribute to various lyricists. I have several (almost a dozen) posts onĀ my blog on my favourite lyricist and poet Shakeel Badayuni.
Jan Nisar Akhtar has been chosen by me as Lyricist #6 (not in any particular order or ranking) in Remembering Great Lyricists series; immediately after Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The following posts about Jan Nisar Akhtar’s songs have been reconstructed from the same Facebook page Lyrical.
I started the series to bring home the point that whilst we genuinely love everything that Shakeel wrote, many other contemporary poets and lyricists were also good and popular.
Before Jan Nisar Akhtar, on Lyrical, I have taken up five lyricists of great fame:
1. Shailendra. The opening song that I selected was Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai.
2. Rajinder Krishan with his Mujhase mat poochh mere ishq mein.
3. Kaifi Azmi with his Jaane kyaa dhoondati rehati hain ye aankhen mujh mein.
4. Sahir Ludhianvi with Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko.
5. Majrooh Sultanpuri with Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai. (Yet to be published here).
Tonight, as I said, we take up our sixth lyricst, Jan Nisar Akhtar‘s creation. The number of posts here depend upon the number of songs put up. For Jan Nosar Akhtar, from his 151 songs, I took up 32 songs and hence we have this post in Part I and Part II.
I just want to remind you that I am not taking up these lyricists in any order or ranking; it is not my intention to prove #1 being better than #2 and so on.
Jan Nisar Akhtar was born a little more than two years before my favourite Shakeel, on the 18th Feb 1914 in Gwalior. Unlike Shakeel, who was the first to venture into poetry (only a distant uncle was a poet), Jan Nisar Akhtar’s father Muztar Khairabadi was poet as was his father’s elder brother, Bismil Khairabadi.
Like many other poets of that era, including Shakeel, he was part of Progressive Writers Movement.
He shifted to Bhopal from Gwalior where he took up job as Head of Department for Urdu and Persian.
In 1949 he shifted to Mumbai and met progressive writers like Rajider Singh Bedi and Mulk Raj Anand. It was only six years later, when he was 41 years old that success came his way when he wrote lyrics of the songs for the movie Yasmin.
And then for the next three and half decades he penned lyrics in the movies until his death on 16 Aug 1976. His son Javed Akhtar is also a lyricist in the movies.
Song #1
Mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafai hai….
I start with a song from his first movie, the 1955 Yasmin, written, produced and directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar and starring Vyjayamthimala, Suresh and Jayant.
So once again, we have AR Kardar giving the first break to Jan Nisar Akhtar as he did to Shakeel and Majrooh.
This was composed by C Ramchandra.
The voice is that of Lata Mangeshkar.
Please enjoy: Mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafai hai….
mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafaaii hai
ai muhabbat terii duhaaii hai
mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafaaii hai …
usane Thaanii hai zulm Dhaane kii
mujh me.n himmat hai Gam uThaane kii
Kush ho, ai dil! tujhe miTaane kii, miTaane kii

jab muhabbat pe baat aaii hai
ai muhabbat terii duhaaii hai
mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafaaii hai …
Song #2
Bechain nazar betab jigar
We just started with our sixth great lyricist: Jan Nisar Akhtar’s first movie: the 1955 AR Kardar movie Yasmin with Vyjayanthimala in the title role.
The story revolves around Sheikh who has lots of properties, and is recovering taxes and dues on them. He lives in a palatial house with his wife, Zubeda (Mumtaz Begum), and son, Ahmad (Suresh). When Ahmad grows up, Zubeda notices that he is spending too much time with women in their harem, and wants his father to get him involved in their business. Later Ahmad mends his ways, gives up on Yasmin and returns home, where he has planned his marriage with Nadira. He refuses to marry Nadira, and runs away from home. What happens in Ahmad’s life is the next part of the story.
Out of the following songs of the movie, we have taken up the first one:
1 “Mujhpe Ilzam-E-Bewafai” Lata Mangeshkar Jan Nisar Akhtar 03:21 Featuring actress Vyjayanthimala
2 “Ankhon Mein Sama Jao” Lata Mangeshkar Jan Nisar Akhtar 03:24 Featuring actress Vyjayanthimala
3 “Tum Apni Yaad Bhi Dil Se” Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood Jan Nisar Akhtar 03:30 Featuring actress Vyjayanthimala and Suresh
4 “Bechain Nazar Betab Jigar” Talat Mahmood Jan Nisar Akhtar 03:46 Featuring actor Suresh
All songs were composed by C Ramchandra.
Lets take up the fourth one now: Talat Mehmood singing: Bechain nazar betab jigar….
bechain nazar betAb jigar
ye dil hai kisIkA dIvAnA hAy dIvAnA

Song #3
Raat rangeeli chamke taare
The songs of the 1955 AR Kardar movie Yasmin are memorable in one more respect: this was the last time Lata Mangeshkar and C Ramchandra were together; she finished his career after that for having proposed marriage to her.
In the same year as Yasmin, another film produced and directed by Jan Nisar Akhtar was released: Baap Re Baap, a comedy starring Kishore Kumar, Chand Usmani, Jayant and Smriti Biswas.
Jan Nisar Akhtar’s songs in this movie were composed by OP Nayyar:
1 “Raat Rangeeli Chamke Taare” Asha Bhosle
2 “Main Bhi Jawan, Dil Bhi Jawan” Asha Bhosle
3 “Diwana Dil Gaaye” Asha Bhosle
4 “Daal Kaise Gale Jab Ke Joota Chale” Kishore Kumar
5 “Tum Na Aaye Ghata Gham Ki Chhane Lagi” Asha Bhosle
6 “Jaane Bhi De Zid Chhod Yeh Bahana” Asha Bhosle
7 “Ab Yeh Bata Jayen Kahan” Asha Bhosle
8 “Tu Na Bata Humein Sab Hai Pata” Asha Bhosle
9 “Piya Piya Piya, Mera Jiya Pukare” Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar
10 “Phool Se Gaalon Pe” Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar
11 “Kahe Dil Yeh Diwana Mera” Asha Bhosle
12 “Aisi Shaadi Se Hum Toh Kunwaare Bhale” Kishore Kumar
We shall be taking up one today and another one tomorrow.
Lets enjoy Asha Bhosle sing: Raat rangeeli chamke taare…..

Song #4
Piya piya piya mera jiya pukaare
We started with our 6th Great Lyricist Jan Nisar Akhtar yesterday. We took two songs of his first movie, an AR Kardar movie Yasmin with Vyjayanthimala in the title role.
Then we took an AR Kardar movie, also of 1955 (since Jan Nisar came into success only at the age of 44 years): Baap Re Baap a comedy starring Kishore Kumar and Chand Usmani.
We took up just one song out of 12 in the movie.
Here is the promised second song sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar, a favourite of mine: Piya piya piya mera jiya pukaare….
aa : piyaa piyaa piyaa meraa jiyaa pukaare
ham bhii chale.nge sai.nyaa sa.ng tumhaare
ki : ( chorii-chorii-chorii ) -2 kaahe hame.n pukaare
tum to basii ho gorii man me.n hamaare -2
aa : piyaa piyaa piyaa …
yuu.N chhup-chhup hamase chale ho kahaa.N sai.nyaa.N
mai.n laaguu.N tore pai.nyaa naa chho.D morii bai.nyaa.N
ki : ye chhab matavaarii ye mukh goraa-goraa
na dekho-dekho aise ke jiyaa Dole moraa
aa : bhole-bhaale nainaa kare jaane kyaa ishaare
ki : tum to basii ho gorii …
aa : mai.n piyaa terii chhaayaa ke sa.ng-sa.ng Doluu.N
tuu jaa_e jahaa.N sai.nyaa.N mai.n saath tere ho luu.N
ki : ye rut manamaatii ye din madamaate
vo dekho gorii ham-tum chale hai.n ha.Nsate-gaate
aa : mere piyaa jhuume jiyaa jhuume ye nazaare
ki : tum to basii ho gorii …
Song #5
Success came Jan Nisar’s way only in 1955 when he was 41 years old though he started making songs from the 1950 Shaheed Latif movie Arzoo starring Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal.
Most songs in the movie were by Majrooh Sultanpuri and some by Prem Dhawan. Jan Nisar’s first song was credited to both Majrooh and Jan Nisar and the song was: Jao sidharo he Radha ke Shyam sung by Shamshad Begum and Mukesh; once again a Hindi bhajan made by so many Muslims: the greatness of India.
Next in 1950 was an SM Nawab movie Khel starring Dev Anand, Nargis and Nigar Sultana.
Sahhad Hussain composed the songs. One of them was by Jan Nisar Akhtar: Apni mehfil mein phir ek baar sung by GM Durrani.
For next four years he went into oblivion and then returned for the 1954 movie Danka, a Jagatlal Parsuman Advani movie starring Amarnath, Hiralal and Nimmi.
Jan Nisar Akhtar, for the first time penned eight songs that were composed by Aziz Hindi:
1. Aara ra ri dekho.
2. Tum meri zindagi mein chand ban ke aana.
3. Kismat hai mujhase khafa.
4. Sahe mohabbat zulm kyun.
5. Ye sitaare ye chand ye raaten ye jawan.
6. Yeh masti ki aalam umango.
7. Bekurbaan ho gayi.
8. Nazrein milake woh hamen.
None of these made any impact.
Then came Barati in 1954, a JK Nanda movie starring Om Prakash, Johnny Walker and Leela Mishra. Jan Nisar Akhtar penned one songs in the movie that was composed by Roshan and sung by Lata Mangehskar: Aa phir se mere pyaar ki kismat swar de.
His first movie in 1955, the year of his success with AR Kardar was Haseena, another Jagatrai Pesumal Advani movie starring Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner P Jairaj and Durga Khote.
As many as 11 of his songs were composed by another Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner MD Bulo C Rani:
1. Ai jazba-e-ishq tera tab aitbaar aaye.
2. Are O chand mere dil ki haalat.
3. Mast adaayen.
4. Teri mehfil se uth kar.
5. Nada siyan kabhi na.
6. Sainyan tore haathon mein gajra nban jayungi.
7. Aaj ki raat ko phoolon mein basa doon.
8. Dil pe kaisi bekhudi chhane lagi.
9. Kahan maine ki zalim milakar nazar.
10. Nahin ab dil ko tabe imtihaan.
11. Naino ke bal chale haseene.
Then came Madhur Milan. It starred Mahipal and Nigar Sultana.
Once again Bulo C Rani was the music director and Jan Nisar had two songs in the movie:
1. Fiza chup hai, hawa chup hai nazaare kuchh nahin kehte.
2. Ye chandini, ye hawa.
Yasmin in 1955 and Baap Re Baap in 1955 were therefore his 7th and 8th movies and now he became a name to reckon with.
In 1956, Jan Nisar Akhtar, at the age of 42 years, really broke big with OP Nayyar in Shrimati 420 and then later in C.I.D.
Shrimati 420 starred Meena Shorey and Johnny Walker in lead roles. It was a GP Sippy production.
Out of nine songs in the movie, Jan Nisar Akhtar penned six and Majrooh penned three:
1. Yahan hum wahan tum mera dil hua hai gum.
2. Ye duniya tere dil ki tasveer baba.
3. Badi rangeeli zindagi hai.
4. Meri zindagi ke hamsafar.
5. Hamako chhod ke kahan jayoge.
6. Tum to hamare man mein Bhagwan ban ke.
In 1956, his second movie was Chhoo Mantar a M Sadiq movie starring Shyama, Anita Guha and Johnny Walker.
And now for the first time in an OP Nayyar movie he penned all eleven songs:
1 “Aaja Re Aaja Na Sata Re Piya” Asha Bhosle
2 “Aankh Mein Ek Soorat Teri Lab Tera Afsaana” Mohammed Rafi
3 “Aankh Mein Ek Soorat Teri Lab Tera Afsaana v2” Mohammed Rafi
4 “Gareeb Jaanke Hamko Na Tum Mita Dena” Mohammed Rafi
5 “Gareeb Jaanke Hamko Na Tum Mita Dena v2” Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt
6 “Gham Na Kar Muskura Jeene Ka Lele Maza” Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt
7 “Gori Gori Raat Hai Taaron Ki Baarat Hai” Geeta Dutt
8 “Jab Baadal Lehraaya Jiya Jhoom Jhoom Ke Gaaya” Geeta Dutt
9 “Hamne Jab Dil Tha Diya Koi Vaada Tha Kiya” Shamshad Begum, Mohammed Rafi
10 “Main Hoon Baanke Nainawaali” Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi
11 “Raat Nasheeli Rang Rangeeli Mast Hawa” Geeta Dutt
We shall be taking up Song #4, which became very popular.
Just for once, realise how much I have to go through just to give you one song, ladies and gentlemen!
Please enjoy Mohammad Rafi and Geeta Dutt sing: Gareeb jaan ke hamako na tum mita dena….
ghareeb jaan ke
ghareeb jaan ke ham ko na tum mita dena
tumhi ne dard diya
tumhi ne dard diya hai tumhi dawaa dena
ghareeb jaan ke
lagi hai chot kaleje pe umar bhar ke liye
lagi hai chot kaleje pe umar bhar ke liye
tadap rahe hain muhabbat mein ik nazar ke liye
nazar milake
nazar milaake muhabbat se muskura dena
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke
jahan mein aur hamara kahan thikana hai
jahan mein aur hamara kahan thikana hai
tumhaare dar se kahaan uthke hamko jaana hai
jo ho sake to
jo ho sake to muqaddar mera jagaa denaa
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke
milaa qaraar na dil ko kisi bahane se
milaa qaraar na dil ko kisi bahane se
tumhari aas lagaaye hain ik zamane se
kabhi to apni
kabhi to apni muhabbat ka aasraa denaa
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke
nazar tumhari mere dil ki baat kahti hai
nazar tumhari mere dil ki baat kahti hai
tumhari yaad to din raat saath rahti hai
tumhari yaad ko
tumhari yaad ko mushqil hai ab bhula dena
tumhi ne dard diya hai tumhi dawaa dena
tumhi ne dard diya
milega kya jo ye duniya hamen sataayegi
milega kya jo ye duniya hamen sataayegi
tumhaare bin to hamen maut bhi na aayegi
kisi ke pyaar ko
kisi ke pyaar ko aasaan nahin mita dena
tumhi ne dard diya hai tumhi dawaa dena
ghareeb jaan ke
Song #6
Aankhon hi aankhon mein ishaara ho gaya
For the 5th song I went through eight of Jan Nisar Akhtar’s movies in order to give you one song; when he finally made it really big with OP Nayyar.
That year, in 1956, OP Nayyar took him for his third movie after Shrimati 420 and Chhoo Mantar: C.I.D., a Raj Khosla movie, Guru Dutt production starring Dev Anand, Shakeela, Waheeda Rehman in debut role and Johnny Walker who was a must in Guru Dutt movies.
Majrooh penned all the songs in the movie but just one song of Jan Nisar too was to become popular.
Please enjoy Mohammad Rafi and Geeta Dutt sing for Dev Anand and Shakila: Aankhon hi aankhon mein ishaara ho gaya…..
ra: (A.Nkho.n hI A.Nkho.n me.n ishArA ho gayA
baiThe baiThe jIne kA sahArA ho gayA ) – 2

Song #7
Meri neendo mein tum mere khwaabon mein tum
Today is the third day since we started taking up songs of our sixth great lyricist: Jan Nisar Akhtar. We covered only six songs from eleven movies between his first movie in 1950: Arzoo and 11th in 1956: C.I.D. The reason is that for the first 8 movies, until AR Kardar’s movie in 1955: Yasmin, none of his songs became all that popular.
Please remember that for about sixty movies in all that he wrote songs for, he did only about 300 songs right up to 1988 movie Soorma Bhopali, released 12 years after his death.
Lets turn to his 12th movie, the 1956 movie: Naya Andaz, a K Amarnath movie starring Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari.
Once again, OP Nayyar composed his songs. There were as many as 11 of them:
- “Meri Nindon Me Tum” – Shamshad Begum, Kishore Kumar
- “Ye Raat Aashiqana” – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle
- “Aaj Suhani Raat Re” – Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Shamshad Begum
- “Mehfil Me Aaj Teri Diwane” – Kishore Kumar
- “Raat Rangili Gaye Re” – Shamshad Begum
- “Chana Zor Garam Babu” – Shamshad Begum, Kishore Kumar
- “Bach Ke Balam Kahaan Jaaoge” – Shamshad Begum
- “Apna To Zamane Me Bas Itna” – Kishore Kumar
- “Hawa Pichle Pahar” – Kishore Kumar
- “Duniya Ke Bazar Me Kaise” – Kishore Kumar
- “Tumhi Se Pyar Tumhi Se” – Kishore Kumar, Shamshad Begum
You would have already seen the songs that I am giving you. That’s because of your having stayed with me long enough and knowing my mind even before I know it!
You guys are simply amazing!
So here is the first song that you would be sure I would have selected.
It has superb lyrics by Jan Nisar Akhtar, superb composition by OP Nayyar, sung beautifully by Kishore Kumar and Shamshad Begum and expressive histrionics by both Kishore and Meena.
Please enjoy: Meri neendo mein tum mere khwaabon mein tum…..
ki: (merii nii.ndo.n me.n tuma, mere Kvaabo.n me.n tuma
ho chuke ham tumhaarii mohabbata me.n guma ) – 2
sh: (mana kii biinaa kii dhuna, tuu baalama aaja suna
merii nazaro.nne tujhako liyaa aaja chuna ) – 2
mana kii biinaa kii dhuna, tuu balama aaja suna
sh: (merii dila kii lagii tuu, merii zi.ndagii tuu
merii hara nazara hai terii dAstaa.n ) – 2
ki: (mere dila kii bahaare.n tumhiiko pukaare.n
tumhiise hai aabaada meraa jahaa.N ) – 2
sh: tU meraa naaza hai, meraa a.ndaaza hai, dila kii Avaaza hai

ho chuke hama tumhaarii mohabbata me.n guma
sh: mana kii biinaa kii dhuna, tuu balama aaja suna
merii nazaro.nne tujhako liyaa aaja chuna
mana kii biinaa kii dhuna, tuu baalama aaja suna
Song #8
Apna to zamaane mein bus itna
The second song from the 1956 K Amarnath movie Naya Andaz that I have chosen is so typically Kishore Kumar in antics though its style is like a nazam recital in a mushaira. Hats off to Kishore Kumar, unarguably the most versatile man ever in Hindi movies; (he could make a movie all by myself complete with songs written, composed and sung by him.)
I loved the lyrics of it.
Please enjoy: Apna to zamaane mein bus itna…..
apanaa to zamaane me.n itanaa hii fasaanaa hai
kuchh ham bhii diivaane hai.n kuchh dil bhii diivaanaa hai
hamase to ko_ii puuchhe vo mast nazar kyaa hai -2
jiine kaa sahaaraa hai marane kaa bahaanaa hai
kuchh ham bhii diivaane …
bhuule se kabhii hamane qaatil na kahaa unako
dil jinakii adaa_o.n kaa Kaamosh nishaanaa hai
apanaa to zamaane …
ye raaz hai ulfat kaa duniyaa ise kyaa jaane
nazaro.n kaa churaanaa hii nazaro.n kaa milaanaa hai
apanaa to zamaane …
ma.nzil kahaa.N hai ai dil ham ishq ke maaro.n kii
ham jaa ke jahaa.N baiThe vahii.n apanaa Thikaanaa hai
apanaa to zamaane …
Song #9
Chana zor garam babu
The third song from the 12th movie of Jan Nisar Akhtar doesn’t require any guessing. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is the original Chana zor garam babu song performed by Meena Kumari and Kishore Kumar on the singing of Shamshad Begum and Kishore Kumar.
It is nice to see Meena Kumari, the latter day Tragedy Queen acting in such light-hearted comedy roles. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the video of the full song but I have vivid memories of it from my childhood days.
Please enjoy: Chana zor garam babu….
chana zor garam babu mai laya mazedar
chana zor garam babu mai laya mazedar
mungfali garam garam mai laya mazedar
mungfali garam garam mai laya mazedar
mera chana hai sabse aala isme dala garam masala
jo bhi dekhe wo matwala
khaye har dil wala are khaye har dil wala
chana zor garam babu mai laya mazedar
chana zor garam babu mai laya mazedar
jisne khaya ek bhi dana aaya usko dil ka lagana
aashik ispe ek jamana
babu tum bhi khate jana are tum bhi khate jana
mungfali garam garam mai laya mazedar
mungfali garam garam mai laya mazedar
chana zor garam babu mai laya mazedar
chana zor garam babu mai laya mazedar

Song #10
Chor lutere daku
Fourth day with our sixth great lyricist: Jan Nisar Akhtar and we just finished with the year 1956, 42nd year in the life of Jan Nisar.
The next movie for which he penned songs was the 1957 movie Ustad directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The movie starred Ashok Kumar, Kumkum. Asha Parekh, Rehman, Anita Guha, Anjali Devi and Master Bhagwan.
Jan Nisar Akhtar, at this stage, was the favourite of OP Nayyar and they made the following songs:
1. Chor lutere daku.
2. Jaan sake to jaan.
3. Kiske lite beqraar gori aaj tera pyaar.
4. Kya dil mein chhupa hai tere.
5. Ye sama phir kahan aa bhi ja.
6. Bedardi beimaan natkhat saanwariya.
7. Soja mere raaj dulare.
I want to give you Chor lutere daku to let you know the kind of compositions for which OP Nayyar would ask his lyricists to pen songs. This one is so fascinating. It has been sung by Geeta Dutt.
Please enjoy: Chor lutere daku……
chor lutere daku chor lutere daku
fire hai awara kahi luta kahi mara nahi
jine ka sahara dekho ji
chor lutere daku fire hai awara kahi
luta kahi mara nahi
jine ka sahara dekho ji chor lutere daku
bachna re babu chale na inpe jadu
kare sabko ye kabu dekho ji

Tujh ko na koi gham, mujh ko na koi gham
Fifth day of Jan Nisar Akhtar, our sixth great lyricist.
Yesterday, we took up a song from his 15th movie, a 1957 movie called Dhake Ki Malmal. And what a song it was: Kuchh kuchh hone laga sung by Shamshad Begum and Asha Parekh, on a fascinating composition by OP Nayyar.
Today, we start with his 1957 movie Duniya Rang Rangeeli.
It was an M Sadiq movie starring Rajendra Kumar, Shyama, Johnny Walker and Chand Usmani, besides Jeevan and Helen.
Predictably, Jan Nisar paired with OP Nayyar to make songs:
1. Tujh ko na koi gham, mujh ko na koi gham.
2. Hichki aane lagi ishq ke naame se.
3. Vo jo chahane waale hain tere sanam.
4. Kiya ye kya tune ishaara.
5. Sainyan kyun aayi mujhe angdaayi.
6. Are mera baalam kitna zalam.
7. Sainyan sainyan chhod de mori bainyan.
8. Vo jo chahne waale hain tere sanam (Female).
OP Nayyar composed some of his finest songs for Johnny Walker. Here is one picturised on Johnny Walker and Chand Usmani.
Please enjoy Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle sing: Tujh ko na koi gham, mujh ko na koi gham…..
tujhko na koi gum mujhko na koi kam
jalim tujhe aa le chale dil me chupake hum
o mere jane ja kahta hai dil jawa
ho pyar ki dunia jaha le chal mujhe waha o mere jane ja
tu meri hasi tu meri khushi hai tere liye meri jindagi
tu meri hasi tu meri khushi hai tere liye meri jindagi
ye arma ye tufa ye dil ki lagi
ye arma ye tufa ye dil ki lagi
tujhko na koi gum mujhko na koi kam
jalim tujhe aa le chale dil me chupake hum
uth gai jidhar ye teri najar khil gaye chaman dur tak udhar
uth gai jidhar ye teri najar khil gaye chaman dur tak udhar
hai kitna suhana hamara safar hai kitna suhana hamara safar
o mere jane ja kahta hai dil jawa
ho pyar ki dunia jaha le chal mujhe waha
tere pyar ka kar to lu yakin ruk na jaye dil haye re kahi
tere pyar ka kar to lu yakin ruk na jaye dil haye re kahi
ye tere ishare hai kitne hasi ye tere ishare hai kitne hasi
tujhko na koi gum mujhko na koi kam
jalim tujhe aa le chale dil me chupake hum
o mere jane ja kahta hai dil jawa
ho pyar ki dunia jaha le chal mujhe waha o mere jane ja

Then came his first movie of 1958: Raagini starring Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Padmini.

Farishta was a Ravindra Dave movie starring Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar and Anita Guha.
Jan Nisar Akhtar was linked with OP Nayyar once again.
They made the following songs (some of them with Qamar Jalalabadi):

I bet you will love this chhed chhad song sung by Asha Bhosle for Anita Guha and Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar at the trailer of the truck enjoying it more than the singer and her target: Balam bada jhutha…..
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta
prit jata ke jhuti jhuti dil mera luta
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta
prit jata ke jhuti jhuti dil mera luta

aaj kyu bhala humse ye ada
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta
prit jata ke jhuti jhuti dil mera luta
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta

aisi bhi kya bat baalma
humse dil ka raz khol re
kaun mil gaya kispe dil gaya
de na humko dhokha
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta
prit jata ke jhuti jhuti dil mera luta
balam bada jhuta sajan bada jhuta
ye bahane dekh chhod de humne teri chal jan li
ab to ho gayi bhul haye re maine teri bat man li

prit jata ke jhuti jhuti dil mera luta
Song #16
Main tumhin se poochhati hoon
Black Cat was his first movie, out of the two, in 1959.
The movie was a Nisar Ahmad Ansari movie that starred Balraj Sahni, Monoo Mumtaz, Johnny Walker and Nisar Ahmad Ansari himself and Professor Gupta.
For the first time, Jan Nisar Akhtar paired with N Dutta (the one who was often with Sahir Ludhianvi after 1957 movie Pyaasa when Sahir and SD Burman fell apart).
They made the following songs:
1. Main tumhin se poochhati hoon mujhe tumase pyaar kyun hai (duet)
2. Sitare raah taakte hain.
3. Main tumhin se poochhati hoon (female).
4. Nashe mein ham nashe mein tum.
6. One two three four, dil ka tu chor.
7. Kaun tujhe roke kaun tujhe toke.
Please enjoy: Main tumhin se poochhati hoon….
koi ikraar kare ya koi inkaar kare
hum se ek baar, nigahe to jara char kare
tum hasi ho tumhe sab dil me jagah dete hain
hum me kya baat hain, aisi jo koi pyar kare
main tumhi se puchhti hu, mujhe tum se pyar kyu hain
kabhi tum daga na doge, mujhe aitbaar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu, mujhe tum se pyar kyu hain
kabhi tum daga na doge, mujhe aitbaar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu
mujhe kyu pukarti hain, ye jawa jawa fijaye
mujhe mil gayi kahan se, ye hasi hasi adaye
ye hasi hasi adaye
meri zindagi pe chhayi, ye nayi bahare kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu, mujhe tum se pyar kyu hain
kabhi tum daga na doge, mujhe aitbaar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu
jo kadam utha rahi hu, wo kadam bahak raha hain
mile tum se kya nigahe, mera dil dhadak raha hain
mera dil dhadak raha hain
mere dil pe hath rakh do, tumhe intjaar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu, mujhe tum se pyar kyu hain
kabhi tum daga na doge, mujhe aitbaar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu
tumhi samne ho mere, main jidhar najar uthau
tumhe bhulana bhi chahu, to kabhi na bhul paau
to kabhi na bhul paau
mere dil pe haye itna tumhe ikhthiyar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu, mujhe tum se pyar kyu hain
kabhi tum daga na doge, mujhe aitbaar kyu hain
main tumhi se puchhti hu

Mr. John was his next movie in 1959 and the last one that year.
The movie was directed by Inder and starred Helen, Iftekhar, Lalita Pawar, Samson and Shyama.

In 1960 he wrote songs for three movies and the first one was Kalpana starring Ashok Kumar and Padmini.

11 “Jaae Jahaan Meri Nazar” Asha Bhosle
The first two are amongst my favourites and we shall take up both these.
OP Nayyar who had told in an interview that he didn’t understand classical music actually was one of the best in raaga based songs (his favourite being Raag Pilu).
Here, he has composed this in Raag Desh and Khammaj and used Tal Dadra.
To know more about the song please access ‘Raaga Based Song Of The Day #15‘.

Tu hai mera prem devta
And as promised, the last song of today evening is also from the 1960 movie Kalpana starring Ashok Kumar and Padmini.
This is another favourite both for the singing skills of Mohammad Rafi and Manna Dey as well as for the exquisite dancing that you can see between Padmini and Raagini.
OP Nayyar composed it in Raag Lalit, Tintal.
To know more about the song please access ‘Raaga Based Song Of The Day #39‘.
