Day #36, Song #107
Jab tumhi nahin apne duniya hi begani hai

(Courtesy: en.wikipedia.org)

Ladies and gentlemen, that brings us to his 1947 movie Parwana and I am excited about that since some of his best songs are in this movie.

The movie was directed by JK Nanda and starred K L Sehgal, Suraiya, K N Singh, and Najma Nazir.

Now you would recall that KL Saigal died on 18 Jan 1947. This movie was released many months after his death.

Khursheed Anwar composed the following songs penned by DN Madhok and sung mainly by KL Saigal, Suraiya and Rajkumari:

1. Jine Ka Dhang Sikhaye Ja KL Saigal
2. Tut Gaye Sab Sapne Mere Ye Do Naina KL Saigal
3. Us Mast Nazar Pe Padi Jo Nazar KL Saigal
4. Aa Ja Balma Re Nagri Dar Lage Suraiya
5. Mohabbat Me Kabhi Aisi Bhi Halat KL Saigal
6. Jab Tumhi Nahin Apne Duniya Hi Begani Hai Suraiya
7. Saiyya Ne Ungli Marori Re Rajkumari
8.Papi Papiha Re Pi Pi Na Bol Bairi Suraiya
9. Mere Mundere Na Bol Ja Kaga Kaga Ja Suraiya
10. Ae Phul Hans Ke Bag Me Kaliyan Khilaye Ja KL Saigal

Let us start with a song that is easily the best song of the movie and also one of the best of Suraiya.

Please enjoy: Jab tumhi nahin apne duniya hi begani hai…

jab tum hi nahi apne, duniya hi begaani hai
jab tum hi nahi apne, duniya hi begaani hai
ulfat jise kahte hai, ik jhuthi kahaani hai
ulfat jise kahte hai, ik jhuthi kahaani hai

jaate hue kyo tumko, is dil ka khayaal aata
jaate hue kyo tumko, is dil ka khayaal aata
tadpa ke chale jaana ik rit puraani hai
tadpa ke chale jaana ik rit puraani hai
jab tum hi nahi apne, duniya hi begaani hai

parvaane ke jalne pe, hansana na tamaashaai
parvaane ke jalne pe, hansana na tamaashaai
hansti hui shama bhi, ik raat ki raani hai
hansti hui shama bhi, ik raat ki raani hai
jab tum hi nahi apne, duniya hi begaani hai
ulfat jise kahte hai, ik jhuthi kahaani hai

Day #36, Song #108
Us mast nazar pe padi jo nazar

We just started taking up songs of the 1947 JK Nanda movie Parwana starring KL Saigal as Inder and Suraiya as Gopi. The first song that I gave you was composed by Khurshid Anwar.

The next one was composed by Khemchand Prakash and KL Saigal sang for himself.

Please remember that the movie was released a few months after Saigal’s death on 18 Jan 1947.

Please enjoy: Us mast nazar pe padi jo nazar…

us mast nazar pe padi jo nazar

Day #37, Song #109
Jeene ka dhang sikhaye jaa

Before we begin this day, lets take stock:

We are into the 16th year of his career that started with 1932 movie Radhey Shyam. In these 16 years we covered 625 songs from 65 movies. On an average I have shared with you one in six songs.

Yesterday, we took up two songs of the 1947 JK Nanda movie starring Suraiya and KL Saigal; the movie having been released a few months after KL Saigal died on 18 Jan 1947.

(Courtesy: medium.com)

Here is a song beautifully sung by KL Saigal on the composition of Khurshid Anwar. Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, just like DN Madhok, was a versatile artiste: a filmmaker, writer, director and music composer. He migrated to Pakistan in 1952, the country of his birth (though that time part of greater India). In India he was composing since 1941. In Pakistan he started in 1956 and made Noor Jehan popular; she too having migrated to Pakistan.

Please enjoy Saigal singing: Jeene ka dhang sikhaye jaa…

ai phul hans ke baagh me kaliya khilaaye jaa
shabnam ke ashk apanee hansee me chhupaaye jaa

jine kaa dhang sikhaaye jaa
kaanto kee nok par khada muskuraaye jaa
jine kaa dhang sikhaaye jaa

bhanvare ne tere kaan me kuchh gunguna diya – (2)
yeh kah ke raaje jindagee tujhako bata diya – (2)
rote huye jahan me too muskuraaye jaa, too muskuraaye jaa
jine kaa dhang sikhaaye jaa

bulbul kee sadaao me bhee paigham yahee hai – (2)
koyal kee bhee har kuk subah sham yahee hai – (2)
o hanste huye phul tere husn ke sadke
patjhad me kya kare koyee itana bataaye jaa
jine kaa dhang sikhaaye jaa

Day #37, Song #110
Toot gaye sab sapne mere ye do naina

I am sure you must have been stunned with the beauty of the songs of the 1947 JK Nanda movie Parwana; songs having been composed by Khurshid Anwar who started his career in India with the Punjabi movie Kurmai in 1941.

The next song is also a Kundan Lal Saigal song who unfortunately left us a few months before the movie was released.

Please enjoy: Toot gaye sab sapne mere ye do naina…

tut gaye sab sapne mere tut gaye sab sapne mere
ye do naina sawno bhado, barse sanjh savere
tut gaye sab sapne mere

dard nahi par thesh lagai tuta jo dil aawaz ye aayi
dard nahi par thesh lagai tuta jo dil aawaz ye aayi
sukh ki tamanna karne wale sukh nahi bhag me tere
tut gaye sab sapne mere
ye do naina sawan bhado, barse sanjh savere
tut gaye sab sapne mere

dukh ke sataye sukh ke diwane dekh rahe the khwab suhane
dukh ke sataye sukh ke diwane dekh rahe the khwab suhane
aankh khuli to aas ke badle niras khadi thi ghere
tut gaye sab sapne mere
ye do naina sawan bhado, barse sanjh savere
tut gaye sab sapne mere

Day #37, Song #111
Sainyan ne ungli marori re

We are taking up songs of the 1947 JK Nanda movie Parwana starring Suraiya and KL Saigal.

This was the last movie of KL Saigal, the movie having been released a few months after Saigal died on 18 Jan 1947.

The last song that I am giving you was sung by Rajkumari; if DN Madhok was among the first generation of lyricists, Rajkumari was also among the first generation of singers.

Please enjoy: Sainyan ne ungli marori re…

Sainyya ne ungli marodi re

Sainyya ne ungli marodi re
Raam qasam sharma gayi main.

Aankh ke pani aankh mein rah

(Courtesy: imdb.com)

His next movie in 1947 was Pagdandi, a Ram Narain Dave movie starring Akhtar Khan and Padma, Shyam Lal, Asha Posley, and Om Prakash.

Once again, after the success of Parwana songs, it was Khurshid Anwar who composed DN Madhok’s songs:

1. Aankh Ke Paanee Aankh Me Rah Munawar Sultana
2. Ik Bawara Panchi Nadiya Ke Kinare
3. Balama Patavaaree Ho Gaye Munawar Sultana
4. O More Raja Ji Mori Gali Aana
5. Rukhsat Hua Jo God Ka Pala Jhukaye Sa
6. Ae Lo Baadal Aaye Wo Nahi Aaye Re
7. Ambuvaa Pe Gaae Koyaliyaa Gaane Zinat Begam
8. Jhulanaa Dalaa De More Sayyaan Ko Bulaa De Zinat Begam, Munawar Sultana
9. Pardesi Balam Aayi Ghata Ghanghor
10. Tum Jug Jug Jiyo Jahan Me Man Ke Jaaye Zinat Begam

I have already told you that Zinat or Zeenat Begum was a Kothewali who was the discovery of Pandit Amar Nath.

Munawar Sultana was an actress who was contemporary with Noor Jahan, Swaran Lata and Ragini. She was the actress of Shakeel Badayuni’s first song ever in Hindi movies, that of 1947 movie Dard: Afsana likh rahi hoon.

So lets listen to Munawar Sultana singing this beautiful number. Please marvel at the beauty of DN Madhok’s lyrics.

Please enjoy: Aankh ke pani aankh mein rah...

aankh ke paani aankh me rah
ban ke kisi ki nishaani
aankh ke paani aankh me rah
ban ke kisi ki nishaani

mithi mithi piden, dil me mere ghar banaaye
mithi mithi piden, dil me mere ghar banaaye
saanjh savere ho jab bhi
tu hi tu yaad aaye
saanjh savere ho jab bhi
tu hi tu yaad aaye
bachpan aise jaaye mera
bachpan aise jaaye mera
kaise jaaye jawaani, kaise jaaye javaani
aankh ke paani aankh me rah
ban ke kisi ki nishaani

sapno me mil lena waada kiya ke
sapno me mil lena waada kiya ke
waha pe to pahre na honge na daake
waha pe to pahre na honge na daake
jab lag aankh khule palko me
jab lag aankh khule palko me
aansu mile nishaani, aansu mile nishaani
aankh ke paani aankh me rah

Lets now turn to the year 1948, the 17th year in the career of Deena Nath Madhok; one of the three first generation lyricists in Hindi movies who started writing songs soon after the first talkie Alam Ara in 1931.

We come to the movie called Nao, a movie directed by DN Madhok himself. His choice of composer was Gyan Dutt who had composed many of his songs earlier. The movie starred Babasaheb Phalke award winner Jairaj together with Nigar Sultana, Misra, Dulari, Badri Prasad, Krishan Kumari, and Amir Bano.

Gyan Dutt composed following songs penned by DN Madhok:

Ek nazar wo yaad hai unaki

We just started taking up songs of DN Madhok’s 1948 movie Nao starring Jairaj and Nigar Sultana. All the ten songs penned by him were composed by Gyan Dutt.

We took up a heart warming duet between Surinder Kaur and Ram Kamlani: Chori chori mori atariya pe.

Here is now a sad song sung by Surinder Kaur.

Please enjoy: Ek nazar wo yaad hai unaki…

ek najar wo yaad hai unki
jisne dil par waar kiya
ek najar wo yaad hai unki
jisne dil par waar kiya
ek najar ab dekh ke rou
haye re kyo pyar kiya
ek najar wo yaad hai

ek najar ne ek nayi
duniya hi basa di mere liye
ek najar ne ek nayi
duniya hi basa di mere liye
ek najar ne sari duniya se
hamko bejaar kiya
ek najar wo yaad hai

ek najar mein sau sau armaan
dekhe the un aankhi mein
ek najar mein sau sau armaan
dekhe the un aankhi mein
un aankho ki ek najar ne

Day #40, Song #120

And now for the last song of the 1948 M Sadiq movie Kajal starring Suraiya and Jayant.

The songs penned by DN Madhok and Shakeel Badayuni were composed by Ghulam Mohammad who was eight years elder to Naushad but was learning as understudy to the latter. And that accounts for Shakeel also writing these songs.

This song was sung by Shamshad Begum who had more than 1200 songs to her credit.

Please enjoy: Sawan ke din aaye balma…

Day #41, Song #123
Dil do nainon mein bura hua ya bhala hula

We just started taking up songs of the 1948 Satish Nigam movie Sunehre Din starring Raj Kapoor and Nigar Sultana. Gyan Dutt composed ten beautiful songs in the movie and we took up a duet between Mukesh and Shamshad Begum.

We could have taken up the best song of the movie sung by Mukesh for Raj Kapoor: Baharon ne jise chheda hai but it was penned by Shewan Rizvi.

Hence lets take up this beautiful duet between Mukesh and Surinder Kaur.

Please enjoy: Dil do nainon mein bura hua ya bhala hula…

dil do naino me kho gaya
bura hua ya bhala hua
jo hona tha so ho gaya
bura hua ya bhala hua

maine dil se kaha ye ulfat hai
dushvar hai ulfat ki rahe
maine dil se kaha jhutha jag hai
jhuthe jag ki jhuthi chahe
maine dil se kaha ye ulfat hai
dushvar hai ulfat ki rahe
maine dil se kaha jhutha jag hai
jhuthe jag ki jhuthi chahe
dil phir bhi tumhara ho gaya
bura hua ya bhala hua
dil do naino me bura hua ya bhala hua

jag bana hai jab se tumhi kaho
kisne dil dekar sukh paya
jag bana hai jab se tumhi kaho
is husn ne kise na thukraya
jag bana hai jab se tumhi kaho
kisne dil dekar sukh paya
jag bana hai jabase tumhi kaho
is husn ne kise na thukraya
dil phir bhi tumhara ho gaya
bura hua ya bhala hua
dil do naino me bura hua ya bhala hua

Na thamate hain aansu

(Courtesy: learningandcreativity.com)

For the next movie in 1950: Meena Bazaar, he paired with Husnlal Bhagatram, the first music duo in Hindi films. There were 13 songs in the movie; 12 were penned by Qamar Jalalabadi and DN Madhok wrote only one. But, that is a beautiful song.

The movie was a Ravindra Dave movie starring Shyam Kumar, Nargis Dutt, Om Parkesh, Gope, Kuldip Kaur, Sapru, and Chandabai.

The song that he wrote was sung by Mohammad Rafi.

Please enjoy: Na thamate hain aansu…

na thamte hain aansu, na rukte hain naale
meri jindgani hai, gam ke hawaale
na thamte hain aansu, na rukte hain naale
na thamte hain aansu

kaho dard de kar chale jane vale
kaho dard de kar chale jane vale
koi kab talak ye amaanat sambhaale
na thamte hain aansu, na rukte hain naale
na thamte hain aansu

abhi chup hue the abhi ro rahe hain
abhi chup hue the abhi ro rahe hain
o teri yaad me hamane yu din nikaale
na thamte hain aansu, na rukte hain naale
na thamte hain aansu

sisakati hain hasrat tadapte hain armaa
bade bevafa ho are jane wale
na thamte hain aansu, na rukte hain naale
na thamte hain aansu

Day #44, Song #130
Mast hawayon mein thandi thandi chhanv mein

Man Ka Meet was his next movie in 1950, a Ratilal Hemchand Punatar movie starring Nirupa Roy and Manhar Desai.

Sardul Kwatra composed nine songs for the movie and as was the case with last movie Meena Bazaar, DN Madhok wrote only one: Bhulane wale bhulane se bhi.

(Courtesy: cinematerial.com)

Khiladi was the next movie in 1950. Once again, DN Madhok wrote only four out of 11 songs of the movie; the others having been penned by Rajinder Krishan and Nakshab Jarchvi.

All songs were composed by Hansraj Behl. Here are the songs penned by DN Madhok:

1. Mast hawayon mein thandi thandi chhanv mein.
2. Ji bharke mohabbat karle.
3. Ye kaali kaali zulfon.
4. Ye teekhi nainon wale.

The first one is a beautiful song sung by Suraiya.

Please enjoy: Mast hawayon mein thandi thandi chhanv mein…

mast hawao me thandi thandi chaav me
mera dil bole anokhi boliya
hoye mera dil bole anokhi boliya
mast hawao me thandi thandi chaav me
mera dil bole anokhi boliya
hoye mera dil bole anokhi boliya

kabhi kahe tu le chal mujhe
waha jaha nit ki jawani ho
kabhi kahe tu le chal mujhe
waha jaha nit ki jawani ho
na ho subah na ho sham
o jaha nit ki raat suhani ho
jaha nit ki raat suhani ho
jaha main hu wo ho, aur taaro ki toliya
mere dil
mera dil bole anokhi boliya
hoye mera dil bole anokhi boliya
mast hawao me thandi thandi chaav me
mera dil bole anokhi boliya
hoye mera dil bole anokhi boliya

jiya kahe piya ko leke chhup chhup jayenge
kale kale baadlo ki oat
kale kale baadlo ki oat
honth ki duniya se dur dur haye re
jaha dil wale pade hai majbur
haye re
jaha dil wale pade hai majbur
phir janam janam ki pyas mitegi
phir janam janam ki pyas mitegi
bhar lenge dono hum dilo ki jholiya
mera dil
mera dil bole anokhi boliya
hoye mera dil bole anokhi boliya
mast hawao me thandi thandi chaav me
mera dil bole anokhi boliya
hoye mera dil bole anokhi boliya

Author: Sunbyanyname

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
