i-Peg Poem of the Week #8
These poems are for my close friend Maj Vishwas Mandloi’s delightful group of tipplers called i-peg. One has to raise a toast to the committed lot for their single-minded aim of spreading cheers!
The last one was titled ‘Jannat Ke Khwaab Aur Sharaab’.
Here is the eighth one:
A drink is like your faithful canine,
Whisky, gin, vodka, rum, beer or wine;
Savoured in moderation, it remains docile,
Else, you would make it bark and whine.
Some of the effects that make it look bad,
Have nothing to do with what you’ve had;
It is really a drink fit for gods in heaven,
How you ingest is what may make it sad.
What fault of your wife if you ill treat her?
Likewise liquor is exactly how you greet her;
She is nice to you when you are nice to her,
She will give you a kick if you stoop to beat her.
A drink is sure to add to your mood,
All depends upon if you are indeed shrewd;
If happy, you become happier and cheerier,
You are ruder if you started being rude.
Liquor can be your worst enemy or best friend,
It can take you to paradise or around the bend;
It is not it but how you treat it that matters,
Like a mirror it just reflects your intent.
A drink is worth 8 (and more) poems!
Endlessly going on Asokan: no one keeps a count
Very complete poem Ravi Sir . You have cared not taught those who are like a glass and if that is intact whole world enjoy and the glass itself let it be transparent or opaque. That is the element of joy you conveyed , but if it is do not afford cleansing and the layers of layers of dirt envelope over it , it may get broken itself and the family. I drink for the first purpose and stop frequently to nullify the the other . After all BALANCE bhi toh kuchh cheez hundi hai ji.
Thank you, Jaswant. Actually, not just drinks; everything in the universe is a reflection of your inner self. But, that’s delving deep into philosophy.
